Important notes for users in theU.K.

Mains plugThis apparatus is fitted with an approved 13Amp plug. To change a fuse in this type of plugproceed as follows:

1 Remove fuse cover and fuse.

2 Fix new fuse which should be a BS1362 5 Amp,A.S.T.A. or BSI approved type.

3 Refit the fuse cover.

If the fitted plug is not suitable for your socketoutlets, it should be cut off and an appropriateplug fitted in its place.If the mains plug contains a fuse, this shouldhave a value of 5 Amp. If a plug without a fuseis used, the fuse at the distribution boardshould not be greater than 5 Amp.

Note: The severed plug must be disposed of toavoid a possible shock hazard should it beinserted into a 13 Amp socket elsewhere.

How to connect a plugThe wires in the mains lead are coloured withthe following code: blue = neutral (N),brown = live (L).

¶ As these colours may not correspond with thecolour markings identifying the terminals inyour plug, proceed as follows:– Connect the blue wire to the terminalmarked N or coloured black.– Connect the brown wire to the terminalmarked L or coloured red.– Do not connect either wire to the earthterminal in the plug, marked E (or e) orcoloured green (or green and yellow).

Before replacing the plug cover, make certainthat the cord grip is clamped over the sheathof the lead - not simply over the two wires.

General Information

This product complies with the radiointerference requirements of the EuropeanCommunity.

Environmental InformationAll unnecessary packaging has been omitted. Wehave tried to make the packaging easy toseparate into three materials: cardboard (box),polystyrene foam (buffer) and polyethylene (bags,protective foam sheet).

Your system consists of materials which can berecycled and reused if disassembled by aspecialized company. Please observe the localregulations regarding the disposal of packagingmaterials, exhausted batteries and oldequipment.

Safety Information Before operating the system, check that the

operating voltage indicated on the typeplate (orthe voltage indication beside the voltageselector) of your system is identical with thevoltage of your local power supply. If not, pleaseconsult your dealer.

Place the system on a flat, hard and stablesurface.

Place the system in a location with adequateventilation to prevent internal heat build-up inyour system. Allow at least 10 cm (4 inches)clearance from the rear and the top of the unitand 5 cm (2 inches) from each side.

The ventilation should not be impeded bycovering the ventilation openings with items,such as newspapers, table-cloths, curtains, etc.

Do not expose the system, batteries or discs toexcessive moisture, rain, sand or heat sourcescaused by heating equipment or direct sunlight.

No naked flame sources, such as lighted candles,should be placed on the apparatus.

No objects filled with liquids, such as vases, shallbe placed on the apparatus.

If the system is brought directly from a cold to awarm location, or is placed in a very damp room,moisture may condense on the lens of the discunit inside the system. Should this occur, the CDplayer would not operate normally. Leave thepower on for about one hour with no disc in thesystem until normal playback is possible.

The mechanical parts of the set contain self-lubricating bearings and must not be oiled orlubricated.

When the system is switched to Standbymode, it is still consuming some power.To disconnect the system from thepower supply completely, remove the ACpower plug from the wall socket.

The type plate is located at the rear of thesystem.For users in the U.K.: please follow theinstructions on page 2.

A PowerBefore connecting the AC power cord to thewall outlet, ensure that all other connectionshave been made.

WARNING!– For optimal performance, use only theoriginal power cable.– Never make or change any connectionswith the power switched on.

To avoid overheating of the system, a safetycircuit has been built in. Therefore, yoursystem may switch to Standby modeautomatically under extreme conditions. Ifthis happens, let the system cool downbefore reusing it (not available for all versions).

B Antennas ConnectionConnect the supplied AM loop antenna and FMantenna to the respective terminals. Adjust theposition of the antenna for optimal reception.

Preparations

FM Antenna

For better FM stereo reception, connect anoutdoor FM antenna to the FM AERIAL (FMANTENNA) terminal.

C Speakers Connection

Front SpeakersConnect the speaker wires to the SPEAKERSterminals, right speaker to "RIGHT" and leftspeaker to "LEFT", coloured (marked) wire to"+" and black (unmarked) wire to "-".

Fully insert the stripped portion of the speakerwire into the terminal as shown.

Notes:– For optimal sound performance, use thesupplied speakers.– Do not connect more than one speaker to anyone pair of +/- speaker terminals.– Do not connect speakers with an impedancelower than the speakers supplied. Please refer tothe SPECIFICATIONS section of this manual.

Optional connectionThe optional equipment and connecting cordsare not supplied. Refer to the operatinginstructions of the connected equipment fordetails.

Connecting other equipment to yoursystemConnect the audio left and right OUT terminalsof a TV, VCR, Laser Disc player, DVD player orCD Recorder to the AUX IN terminals.

Note:– If you are connecting equipment with a monooutput (a single audio out terminal), connect it tothe AUX IN left terminal. Alternatively, you can usea “single to double” cinch cable (the output soundstill remain mono).

Inserting batteries into theremote controlInsert two batteries (not supplied) type R03 orAAA into the remote control with the correctpolarity as indicated by the "+" and "-"symbols inside the battery compartment.

CAUTION!– Remove batteries if they are exhaustedor will not be used for a long time.– Do not use old and new or differenttypes of batteries in combination.– Batteries contain chemical substances, sothey should be disposed off properly.

Basic Functions

IMPORTANT!Before you operate the system, completethe preparation procedures.

Switching the system on

Press 2 STANDBY ON or SELECTSOURCE. The system will switch to the last selectedsource.

Press CD, TUNER, TAPE or AUX on theremote control. The system will switch to the selected source.

To switch the system to standby mode Press 2 STANDBY ON on the system or

remote control. If in recording mode, press STOP 9 first.

The volume level, interactive sound settings,last selected source and tuner presets will beretained in the player's memory.

Power-saving automatic standbyAs a power-saving feature, the systemautomatically switches to standby 15 minutesafter a tape or CD has reached the end and nocontrol is operated.

Adjusting volume and sound1 Turn the VOLUME control anti-clockwise to

decrease or clockwise to increase volume on thesystem (or press VOL -/+ on the remotecontrol). Display shows the volume level VOL and anumber from 0-32.

2 Press DSC repeatedly to select the desiredsound effect: CLASSIC (no indication)/

ROCK ( ) / JAZZ ( ) / POP ( ).

3 Press DBB to switch bass enhancement on oroff. Display shows: DBB if the DBB is activated.

4 Press INCREDIBLE SURR. (IS on theremote control) to switch the surround soundeffect on or off. Display shows: if activated.

Note:– The effect of INCREDIBLE SURROUND mayvary with different types of music.

5 Press MUTE on the remotecontrol to interrupt soundreproduction instantly. Playback will continuewithout sound and the displayshows MUTE.

To activate sound reproduction you can:– press MUTE again;– adjust the volume controls;– change source.

CD Operation

IMPORTANT!The lens of the CD player should never betouched.

Playing a discThis CD player plays Audio Discs including CD-Recordables and CD-Rewritables.

CD-ROM, CD-I, CDV, VCD, DVD or computerCDs, however, are not possible.

1 Select CD source.

2 Press OPEN•CLOSE on thetopof the system to open the CDcompartment. OPEN is displayed when youopen the CD compartment.

3 Insert a disc with the printed side facing up andpress down on OPEN•CLOSE to close theCD door. READ is displayed as the CD player scans thecontents of a disc, and then the total number oftracks and playing time are shown.

4 Press PLAY•PAUSE 2; (on the remotecontrol 2;) to start playback. Current track number and elapsed playingtime of the track are displayed during discplayback.

5 To interrupt playback press PLAY•PAUSE 2;

(on the remote control 2;). PressPLAY•PAUSE 2; (on the remote control 2;)again to resume play. The display freezes and the elapsed playingtime flashes when playback is interrupted.

6 To stop disc playback, press STOP 9.

Note: CD play will also stop when;– the CD door is opened.– the disc has reached the end.– you select another source: TAPE, TUNER, AUX orstandby.

Selecting a different track Press PREV ¡1 or NEXT 2™ (on the remote

control ¡ or ™) once or repeatedly until thedesired track number appears in the display.

If you have selected a track number shortly afterloading a disc or in the PAUSE position, you willneed to press PLAY•PAUSE 2; (on theremote control 2;) to start playback.

Finding a passage within a track1 Press and hold down on PREV ¡1 or

NEXT 2™ (on the remote control à or á ). The disc is played at high speed and lowvolume.

2 When you recognise the passage you want,release PREV ¡1 or NEXT 2™ (on theremote control à or á ). Normal playback continues.

Note:– During a disc programme or if SHUFFLE/REPEAT active, searching is only possible within thesame track.

CD Operation

Different play modes: SHUFFLEand REPEATYou can select and change the various playmodes before or during playback. The playmodes can also be combined withPROGRAMME.

SHUFFLE ......... tracks of the entire disc/programme are played inrandom order

SHUFFLE and REPEAT ALL…to repeat theentire disc/ programmecontinuously in random order

REPEAT ALL ... repeats the entire disc/programme

REPEAT ............plays the current trackcontinuously

1 To select your play mode, press the SHUFFLEor REPEAT button before or during playbackuntil the display shows the desired function.

2 Press PLAY•PAUSE 2; (on the remotecontrol 2;) to start playback if in the STOPposition. If you have selected SHUFFLE, playback startsautomatically.

3 To return to normal playback, press therespective SHUFFLE or REPEAT button untilthe various SHUFFLE/ REPEAT modes are nolonger displayed.

You can also press STOP 9 to cancel your playmode.

Programming track numbersProgramme in the STOP position to select andstore your disc tracks in the desired sequence. Ifyou like, store any track more than once. Up to20 tracks can be stored in the memory.

1 Press PROGRAM to enter the programmingmode. A track number is shown and PROGRAM

flashes.

2 Use the PREV ¡1 or NEXT 2™ (on theremote control ¡ or ™) to select your desiredtrack number.

3 Press PROGRAM to confirm the track numberto be stored. The number of tracks programmed and totalplaying time of the programme is shown briefly,then the selected track and PROG.

4 Repeat steps 2-3 to select and store all desiredtracks. FULL is displayed if you attempt toprogramme more than 20 tracks.

5 To start playback of your disc programme, pressPLAY•PAUSE 2; (on the remote control 2;).

Reviewing the programmeIn STOP mode, press and hold downPROGRAM for a while until the display showsall your stored track numbers in sequence.

Erasing the programmeYou can erase the programme by:

pressing STOP 9 once in the STOP mode; pressing STOP 9 twice during playback; opening the CD compartment;

PROGRAM disappears from the display.

Radio Reception

Tuning to radio stations1 Select TUNER source.

TUNER is displayed briefly.

2 Press BAND once or more to select yourwaveband.

3 Press down on TUNING à or á and releasebutton. The radio automatically tunes to a stationwith sufficient reception. Display indication duringautomatic tuning: SEARCH. If a FM station is received in stereo, STEREO isshown.

4 Repeat step 3 if necessary until you find thedesired station.

To tune to a weak station, press TUNING àor á briefly and repeatedly until you havefound optimal reception.

Programming radio stationsYou can store up to a total of 40 radio stationsin the memory.

Automatic programmingAutomatic programming will start with a chosenpreset number. From this preset numberupwards, former programmed radio stations willbe overridden. The system will only programmestations which are not in the memory already.

1 Press PRESET 3 or 4 (on the remote control¡ or ™ ) to select the preset number whereprogramming should start.

Note:– If no preset number is selected, default is preset(1) and all your presets will be overridden.

2 Press PROGRAM for more than 2 seconds toactivate programming. AUTO is displayed and available stations areprogrammed in order of waveband receptionstrength: FM followed by MW and LW. The lastpreset automatically stored will then be played.

Manual programming

1 Tune to your desired station (see “Tuning toradio stations”).

2 Press PROGRAM to activate programming. PROGRAM flashes in the display.

3 Press PRESET 3 or 4 (on the remote control¡ or ™ ) to allocate a number from 1 to 40 tothis station.

4 Press PROGRAM again to confirm the setting. PROGRAM disappears, the preset number andthe frequency of the preset station are shown.

5 Repeat the above four steps to store otherstations.

You can override a preset station by storinganother frequency in its place.

Radio Reception

Tuning to preset radio stations Press PRESET 3 or 4 (on the remote control

¡ or ™ ) until the desired preset station isdisplayed.

RDSRadio Data System is a service that allowsFM stations to show additional information. Ifyou are receiving a RDS station, and thestation name are displayed.When automatic programming is used, RDSstations will be programmed first.

Scrolling through different RDSinformation

Press RDS briefly and repeatedly to scrollthrough the following information (if available):– Station name– Programme type such as NEWS, SPORT,

POP M ...– Radio text messages– Frequency

Note:– If you press RDS and the RDS signal is notavailable NO RDS is displayed.

EONEnhanced Other Network allows you tosearch for an RDS station offering a certainprogramme type. If EON is available, isshown.

Searching programme type(PTY)PTY helps you find a desired programme type.To enable PTY, first programme RDS stationsinto the tuner memory (see “Programming radiostations”)

1 While receiving an RDS station, press RDSbriefly until the programme type is displayed.

2 Press PRESET 3 or 4 (on the remote control¡ or ™ ) until the desired programme type isdisplayed.

3 Press and hold down on TUNING à or á(on the remote control à or á ) to startsearching. The radio tunes to a RDS stationbroadcasting this programme type. If theprogramme type is not available TYPE NOTFOUND is displayed.

RDS News and TrafficAnnouncement (TA)You may set up the tuner in such a way thatlistening to CD or tape is interrupted by theNEWS of a RDS station. This only works if theRDS station broadcasts a NEWS signal whilesending the news.

1 Tune to the desired RDS station.

2 Press NEWS/TA once ormore on the remote control toselect the NEWS option. NEWS ON, TA ON or OFF isdisplayed briefly. NEWS is displayed if you haveactivated the NEWS or TA option. Changinglistening source will not disarm the function.

Notes:– To avoid unwanted recordings, the NEWSannouncement does not work while recording atape.– When you receive RDS news or trafficannouncements during CD playback, playback willpause and you will be able to hear the news/TA.Playback resumes after the broadcast has finished.In tape mode, the tape continues playing but youwill hear the news/TA only until the broadcast hasfinished.– If you are using the RDS NEWS announcementwith an EON station, the whole network issearched for the respective news.

Disarming RDS News and TrafficAnnouncementThere are a number of ways to disarm the newsfeature:

Press NEWS/TA on the remote control duringreception of the news option.

Press 2 STANDBY ON on the system orremote control.

Tune to a non-RDS-station.

Tape Operation / Recording

Tape playback1 Select TAPE source.

The display shows TAPE briefly. The tapecounter TAPE 000 display with the SIDE A orSIDE B and reverse mode status are then shownduring tape mode.

2 Press OPEN•CLOSE to open the tape door.

3 Insert a recorded tape and close the tape door. Load the tape with the open side downward and

the full spool to the left.

5 By pressing ¡1 or 2™ on the system (on theremote control à or á), fast winding of tape ispossible in both directions.

During fast winding, you can monitor the tapemessage with the tape counter.

6 To stop the tape, press STOP 9 . To reset the tape counter, press STOP 9 again.

Note:– The sound source cannot be changed whilerecording a tape.

Switching tape sidesThe tape side can be switched manually orautomatically before or during tape playback.

Press SIDE A/B (during playback only 2; onthe remote control). The display shows SIDE A or SIDE B and thetape counter resets to 000.

Reverse mode options Press REV MODE repeatedly to select your

option;å : playback stops at the end of the tape.

: both sides are played once.: both sides are played repeatedly, up to 5 times each side.

General information onrecording

Recording is permissible insofar as copyright orother rights of third parties are not infringed.

For recording, use only NORMAL (IEC type I)tapes on which the tabs have not yet beenbroken. This deck is not suited for recording onMETAL (IEC IV) type tapes.

The best recording level is set automatically.Altering the VOLUME, INCREDIBLESURROUND, DBB or INTERACTIVE SOUNDcontrols will not affect the recording in progress.

The recording sound quality might differdepending on the quality of your recordingsource and the tape.

At the very beginning and end of the tape, norecording will take place during the 7 secondswhen the leader tape passes the recorder heads.

To protect a tape from accidental erasure, havethe tape in front of you and break out the lefttab. Recording on this side is no longer possible.If, however, you wish to record over this sideagain, cover the tabs with a piece of adhesivetape.

Recording timerTo record from the radio, you will need to use apreset radio station and to set a start (ON) andfinish (OFF) time.

1 Insert a suitable tape into the deck. If desired, select tape reverse mode option.

2 Select the preset radio station to record from.

3 Press TIMER ON•OFF for more than 2seconds. TIMER flashes and a source is displayed.

4 Press SELECT SOURCE repeatedly, or turnVOLUME clockwise until REC TUN source isdisplayed.

5 Press TIMER ON•OFF to confirm the source. SET ON TIME is displayed, TIMER and theclock digits for the hours flash.

6 Turn VOLUME to set the hours: clockwise forhours up; anti-clockwise for hours down.

7 Press TIMER ON•OFF again. The clock digits for the minutes flash.

8 Turn VOLUME to set the minutes: clockwise forminutes up; anti-clockwise for minutes down.

9 Press TIMER ON•OFF to confirm the ONstart time. SET OFF TIME is displayed, TIMER and theclock digits for the hours flash.

10 Repeat steps 6-8 to set the finish time.

11 Press TIMER ON•OFF to confirm the timersettings. TIMER is shown and the recording timer isnow set.

Clock/Timer

Setting the clockThere are two possible methods for setting theclock: manually or automatically by using RDS.

Automatic clock setting (RDS versionsonly)

1 Tune to a RDS station (see “Radio Reception”).

2 Press CLOCK SET for more than 2 seconds. SEARCH RDS TIME is displayed for amaximum of 90 seconds; the time is thendisplayed. NO RDS TIME is displayed if no time signalhas been received and you will have to set theclock manually.

Manual clock setting

1 In standby, press CLOCK SET. The clock digits for the hours flash.


3 Press CLOCK SET again. The clock digits for the minutes flash.


5 Press CLOCK SET toº confirm the time.

Note:– The backlight for clock display is dim in standby.

Setting the timer The system can be used as an alarm clock,

whereby the CD, TUNER or TAPE is switched onat a set time. The clock time needs to be set firstbefore the timer can be used.

You can also use it to record a favourite tunerprogramme at a set period (see “Recordingtimer”)

During setting, if no button is pressed within 90seconds, the system will exit timer setting modeautomatically.

1 In any mode, press TIMER ON•OFF for morethan 2 seconds.

2 Turn VOLUME clockwise to select soundsource. Display sequence shows CD, TUNER, TAPE orREC TUNER.

3 Press TIMER ON•OFF to confirm yourdesired mode. The selected source CD or TUNERTUNER

Activating and deactivatingSLEEPThe sleep timer enables the system to switch offby itself after a set period of time. The clock timeneeds to be set first before the sleep timer canbe used.

Press SLEEP on the remotecontrol once or more. Display shows SLEEP andone of the sleep time optionsin sequence: 60, 45, 30,15,SLEEP OFF, 60... if you haveselected a time. Once SLEEP is activated, SLEEPON scrolls across the display at repeatedintervals.

Troubleshooting

WARNINGUnder no circumstances should you try to repair the system yourself, as this will invalidate thewarranty. Do not open the system as there is a risk of electric shock.

If a fault occurs, first check the points listed below before taking the system for repair. If youare unable to remedy a problem by following these hints, consult your dealer or service centre.

“NO DISC” is displayed. – Insert a disc.– Check if the disc is inserted upside down.– Wait until the moisture condensation at the lens

has cleared.– Replace or clean the disc, see “Maintenance”.– Use a finalised CD-RW or CD-R.

Cleaning the Cabinet Use a soft cloth slightly moistened with a mild

detergent solution. Do not use a solutioncontaining alcohol, spirits, ammonia or abrasives.

Cleaning Discs When a disc becomes dirty,

clean it with a cleaning cloth.Wipe the disc from the centreout.

Do not use solvents such asbenzene, thinner, commerciallyavailable cleaners, or antistatic spray intended foranalogue records.

Cleaning the disc lens After prolonged use, dirt or dust may

accumulate at the disc lens. To ensure goodplayback quality, clean the disc lens with PhilipsCD Lens Cleaner or any commercially availablecleaner. Follow the instructions supplied withcleaner.

Maintenance

Cleaning the Heads and the Tape Paths To ensure good recording and playback quality,

clean the heads A, the capstan(s) B, andpressure roller(s) C after every 50 hours oftape operation.Caution: Do not rotate the heads duringcleaning.

Use a cotton swab slightly moistened withcleaning fluid or alcohol.

You can also clean the heads by playing acleaning tape once.

RADIO RECEPTION

Radio reception is poor. – If the signal is too weak, adjust the antenna orconnect an external antenna for better reception.

– Increase the distance between the Micro HiFiSystem and your TV or VCR.

TAPE OPERATION / RECORDING

Recording or playback cannot be made. – Clean deck parts, see “Maintenance”.– Use only normal (IEC I) tape for recording.

“CHECK TAPE” is displayed. – Apply a piece of adhesive tape over the missingtab space.

The tape deck door cannot open. – Remove and reconnect the AC power plug andswitch on the system again.

GENERAL

The system does not react when buttons – Remove and reconnect the AC power plug andare pressed. switch on the system again.

Sound cannot be heard or is of poor – Adjust the volume.quality. – Disconnect the headphones.

– Check that the speakers are connected correctly.– Check if the stripped speaker wire is clamped.

The left and right sound outputs are – Check the speaker connections and location.reversed.

The remote control does not function – Select the source (CD or TUNER, for example)properly. before pressing the function button (É,í,ë).

– Reduce the distance between the remote controland the system.

– Insert the batteries with their polarities(+/– signs) aligned as indicated.

The Clock/Timer setting is erased. – Power has been interrupted or the power cordhas been disconnected. Reset the clock/timer.
