WELCOME BACK!
A message from Director, Dr. Robert Wade, PGA
For many people, the Master’s signals the unofficial beginning of the golf season. Closer to home, the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro means a beginning of a different sort- the beginning of a new school year. There is something exciting about the beginning of a new year on campus. It is very much like playing a round of golf.
For some, they are coming to the first tee. They don’t know the rest of the members of the group. The course is new and nobody knows exactly what it looks like. Everyone wants to do their best and play well from the first hole to the last. Others are beginning the back nine after playing some holes and then taking a break to go out and be part of the “real world”. They have seen some of the challenges of the course but are not through yet and still have plenty of opportunities to shoot a great score. Others are approaching the final few holes. They have made plenty of excellent swings, overcome hazards and bad shots and the final few shots are upon them before they finish their round and move on to the next course. Whichever the case for you, I am glad you have chosen to spend some time with us.
You have arrived at NC State at an important time in the history of this campus. The upper administration is making changes to streamline the university and better prepare our students for their future. Closer to home, the PGA has updated their curriculum to more adequately meet the needs to the golf industry and to give you a better chance to succeed in your career. The PGM Club will offer you plenty of opportunities to get involved and to build the best possible resume. Lonnie Poole Golf Course continues to mature and the clubhouse construction should begin this semester.
Susan, Andy and I will be your Player’s Assistants during your round. We will try to help you keep your ball in play and avoid the hazards. We all share the same goal – to help you have the best possible experience possible while you are here with us and to assist you in meeting your goals both while in school and after graduation. If you have questions, please come and ask us. If you need something, let us know. If something is going wrong, tell us. We are here to make your experience both enjoyable and memorable. Play well and enjoy your round!

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW!
A message from Internship Coordinator, Andy Betz, PGA
Believe it or not, it is time for another semester to begin. We are looking forward to having you back on campus, whether you are an incoming Freshman or a current student returning from one of your internships.
All of our students have the opportunity to complete at least 3 internships during your time on campus at some of the best facilities in the country and also worldwide. What you learn, who you meet and the opportunities that you will face will be your ticket to an enjoyable and successful career in the golf industry. The industry has changed over the years and each of you will have the chance to find the best career path for you during your internships. Some non-traditional internships include the following: Sales Representative, working at an indoor golf studio, writing for PGA Magazine, General Management and working for the PGA of America. The list is ever expanding and your time on campus should be focused on finding the correct fit for your given career path.
Each of you will be required to complete at least 10 MSR Points (Member Service Requirements) each semester you are on campus. Throughout the semester we will have 3 to 4 MANDATORY PGM Club Meetings on Sunday evenings throughout the semester. Each of you will be required to participate in at least 3 golf tournaments each semester. So there are 6 MSR Points with the meetings and tournaments, so the other 4 MSR points will come from other various types of volunteer opportunities: Serving as a PGM Committee Member, First Tee of the Triangle volunteer, Adopt a Hole, volunteering for various golf tournaments, etc. Just because you meet the minimum of 10 MSR Points, does not mean you need to stop, accumulate as many as you can during the semester. The more you get involved in during your time on campus will only help further your career in the future.
Come in with an open mind and we will assist you in any way we can to help you find the correct career path in the ever evolving golf industry. Please don’t ever forget that our doors in the PGA Golf Management office are always open to each and everyone of you. We want to get to know you, so don’t be a stranger around the office and get involved in any way you can so you will be proud to be a graduate from the North Carolina State University PGA Golf Management Program.

A message from Student Services Coordinator, Susan Colby
Hi Everyone,
Welcome… and welcome back! What an exciting way to start the new academic year with this all inclusive student newsletter created by your student president, Steve Limpach.
Just a few reminders as we get started this year:
GET INVOLVED! The many activities and events scheduled through the PGM Club, Tournament Committee, PGM Ambassadors, and activities sent your way via the PGM office, offer you fabulous opportunities to build your network and your resume. Remember those students who are seniors and super seniors will be looking back to NC State in the next few years to hire interns and future PGA professionals. One sure fire way to make sure you are the one being looked upon to hire, is to get to know those older students and show them you are eager to learn and want to be a top notch PGA Professional! So, please GET INVOLVED and get to know your classmates.
OCTOBER 15* – This is the final day to drop a class without a grade. You must have at least 12 credit hours in order to be a full time student. It is ALWAYS good to have at least 15-16 credit hours in case you have trouble with a class and need to drop something. Keep this date in mind.
TUTORING – Well BEFORE October 15, if you have trouble with any class let’s talk about it. The College of Natural Resources offers “FREE” tutoring services for its students as long as the tutor is also a CNR student. Many PGM students have served as tutors for other PGM students … and all tutors will be paid! If you are having trouble with a class by the end of the first quiz or test come see me about it. Let’s talk options!
PGM FACEBOOK GROUP – Please join our PGM Facebook group as we will be posting information on this page about upcoming events and activities. You don’t want to miss out on anything fun or important!
Lastly, we want to welcome our new students to NC State and our PGA Golf Management program. Please take time to introduce yourself to them and help them become active members of our PGM program and NC State family.

GREETINGS FROM
LONNIE POOLE GOLF COURSE!
Nick Dillman, PGA
Head Golf Professional
Welcome Back Pack,
On behalf of the staff of Lonnie Poole Golf Course I would like to welcome all of our NCSU PGM students back to school. LPGC had a record number of rounds last year reaching 38,000!
Lonnie Poole Golf Course is set up as a living laboratory for PGA Golf Management students, Turf Management students, and home to our Men's and Women's Golf Teams. We are very excited to host PGM tournaments and help you obtain your goals whether it be lowering your scores, completing your work experience kits, fulfilling volunteer hours, or simply building your portfolio.
As a recent graduate from the PGA Golf Management program (May 2009), I know exactly what you are going through. I encourage everyone to take time and work on their golf game, this is the reason we all got into the business of golf, to support the game. One thing I always regret is not paying enough golf. Now this doesn't mean skipping class to play, but simply managing your time to allow you to escape to the tee! There are 19 PGM schools in the nation educating and training new professionals every year. Now is the time to get the leg up on that competition and separate NCSU PGA golf professionals from the rest. It is very important to set goals for yourself as you approach graduation. Ask yourself, “What do you want to do with your education? Where do you want to be? and where do you want to end up?”
Please do not hesitate to call upon me for advice as you move towards reaching your goals! I am here to help and look forward to seeing everyone at the course!

Find out what fits YOU the best!
Medinah Country Club (Chicago, IL)
Bandon Dunes Golf Resort (Bandon, OR)
Bandon Dunes was truly an eye-opening experience for me. For someone who
hadn’t experienced working inside the golf shop previously, I was not only
able to learn how to run the counter but master the golf and retail side of the
number one resort golf shop in the country. The amount of merchandise sold
and daily rounds of golf throughout the resort are unthinkable.
I was exposed to so many aspects of the golf industry within this internship and
also learned how to live on my own at the other end of the country for seven
months.
The intern program is so strong, and the staff does so much to help you learn all that you can
during your time there. Not to mention, the landscape is like nothing I had ever seen before. The
five golf courses are breathtaking! I loved it out there! —Gabriella Sinkovic
Strap on your seatbelt and hold on tight. Medinah is no ordinary private
country club. It's more like a private resort on steroids, and you had better be
ready to rock and roll. From the three-day 350-man member guest, to
Monday corporate outings hosting 300 + players, to the twice-weekly
Tuesday/Thursday member events, all capped off by a 200 + student junior
golf program; lazy moments are few and far between. That is, unless the
Chicago stratosphere decides to unleash its rain and wind on you.
If your idea of a good time is a Tazo tea-sipping Sunday afternoon with Grandma and Gouda
cheese, you might reconsider your direction.
But if you seek adventure, excitement, and a learning experience surrounded by the best
professionals in the industry, who, while expecting nothing short of perfection, will take the time to
provide the tools and resources that introduce new skills to your arsenal, hone your already strong
points, and teach you how to be the best professional you can be-this might be the spot for you.
It can be an experience that will show you everything you'll ever stumble upon in the green grass
business, if you let it. Don't be afraid to ask questions, make mistakes, and give feedback-a world of
knowledge is there for the taking. Go after it.
Be prepared to hit the ground sprinting-and to keep that pace for your entire stay at Medinah
Country Club. —Dave Nastalski

Find out what fits YOU the best!
Pinehurst Resort (Pinehurst, NC)
Wade Hampton Golf Club (Cashiers, NC)
As many of you may know, I have a strong relationship with the staff at
Pinehurst Resort, being that I have lived there my entire life. I decided to do
my first internship at Pinehurst, and I couldn’t have asked for a better
experience. I was hired as a Camp Counselor for the Pinehurst Golf Academy
Junior Camps, and because I did such a good job I was asked to come back the
next three years to teach the camps and be a Camp Counselor.
Many of you may have met or seen Eric Alpenfels, the Director of Instruction
at Pinehurst Resort. He served as my direct supervisor, and I couldn’t have asked for a better person
to work under. The knowledge that he holds about the golf industry is incredible, and I would
recommend working under him to any student interested in expanding your knowledge about the
golf swing. He will answer any questions that you may have, and goes out of his way to make sure
you understand them correctly.
If anyone is interested in an internship at Pinehurst Resort please feel free to contact me, and if you
see me at any time do not hesitate to ask any questions. —Brian Holstein
Wade Hampton Golf Club is one of the most beautiful and well-maintained
golf courses you will ever play. It is located in an extremely small town by
the name of Cashiers, in the southwestern mountains of North Carolina. The
Club is private, member-owned, and is designed for those who appreciate a
pure, quality golf experience. As an intern, you will be responsible for
performing the outside service operations, range attendant, caddying and the
occasional work experience opportunities within the clubhouse. Expect to
work long hours and be on-call for any caddy loops that may arise daily.
An internship experience at Wade Hampton provides an excellent opportunity to build relationships
with a membership that is stacked full of successful individuals that could potentially be of help
towards future career goals. Housing is located just a mile down the road from the entrance.
Almost 15 other PGM students will be living in the same confines; therefore you will have the
chance to live and get to know other PGM students from Universities all around the country. The
location of the club doesn’t provide for much entertainment such as shopping malls and movie
theaters. Although, it makes up for it with world class golf (including other clubs in the area),
hiking, fishing or any other outdoors activity. —Hobe Collins

Around the World and Back
As PGM students, we are all required to obtain 16-months of internship experience. You have the option to stay close to home or go as far as California. However, I encourage you to take an even further step. Take a step that puts you outside of the United States and into a foreign land, full of excitement and adventure. For me, the beautiful country of New Zealand was my further step and internship destination.
In 2011, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and onto a plane that would take me across the globe. As my 13-hour flight finally brought me to my destination, I was excited. My internship opportunity was at a 5-star luxury resort called The Farm at Cape Kidnappers. With its 600-foot cliffs standing high above the Pacific Ocean and minimum $2,000/night guest cabins, it is no doubt why Cape Kidnappers is ranked as the #34 Best Golf Course in the World and Top 20 Resort in the World.
Working for Cape Kidnappers was an unimaginable dream. Everyday I met someone new; someone from a different country, someone native to New Zealand, and even alumni of this very own university… GO WOLFPACK!
I experienced the full dedicated service that is offered to its guests to make their vacation a paradise. Not only was work exciting, but even beyond the internship was a thrill. Things like driving on the left side of the road, interesting accents, sky diving, bungee jumping, climbing a volcano, and swimming with sharks, all made my experience one that I will never forget. I knew I was in for an exciting four months when I had to buy steaks using grams instead of pounds!
I strongly encourage every student to study abroad for an internship. Search for golf facilities in a country that you find interesting and discover your paradise.
Have an experience of a lifetime!
If you have any questions about my internship experience in New Zealand, please feel free to contact me.

Play More Golf!
As many of you may know, I love playing golf. I try to play in every tournament, I play with friends several times a week, and I practice when I can. I schedule my job and even my girlfriend (ask her), around golf. I recognize that I have an extreme passion for playing golf, however I do not expect each of you to have the same feelings. This article is not intended to convince you that playing the game, slaving over the game, or being great at the game are vital in order to be a great golf professional. They are not necessary, and I am sure most of you have or will meet professionals who prove this to be true. What I would like to do is give you a friendly reminder of why you are in this program.
We all have different reasons for the career path that we have chosen. Some of us are here because we have worked in the business prior to college and decided it was the best choice for us. Of course, some of us chose this program because we did not know what else to do. Some of us may have transferred in from other programs and find solace in Parks and Recreation. Now that we are all here we are inevitably developing long-term goals. Some eventually have high hopes of playing professionally, while others have dreams of being great green grass professionals, teaching professionals, golf entrepreneurs, golf writers, club fitters, retailers, general managers, etc. Forced to accept the reality of our major we must concede that some will even leave the professional side of golf in pursuit of an alternative career.
Although many different circumstances have led us to pursue our Class A PGA card, we can never forget the reason why we are here, the endless pursuit of that one moment when our lives and golf became entwined forever. This moment happens every time you perfectly strike a golf ball, and to steal the words from Tin Cup, “that tuning fork rings in your loins”. It is as if everything in the world is at peace. It is arguably the purest feeling on earth, it is the reason why we are all ultimately here, and it is the reason why we should embark with vigor on whatever career choice that we make in this wonderful business.
The well struck golf ball has sung its siren song in all of us and whether we choose to play constantly or occasionally its call will hopefully be as true, simple, and perfect as the first time it was ever played. We must never forget the beauty, friendships, heartbreak, and comfort the game brings to our lives. With that in mind I’ll leave you with a great quote from the Irish author Robert Lynd,
I’ll see you on the course!
“It is almost impossible to remember how tragic a place this world is when one is playing golf.”

The 2012 CNR Alumni and Friends Golf Tournament was a great
success. Hosted at NC State’s Lonnie Poole Golf Course, the
tournament was a great way for alumni and friends to reconnect
as well as network with their fellow competitors. Friends from all
over gathered to help fill up the tournament field and support
NCSU’s College of Natural Resources. The weather was fantastic
and the outcome was exciting!
Sponsored by the NC State Natural Resources Foundation, Inc.
the 3rd annual event went very well from start to finish. The for-
mat was 4-Person Superball, which added a fun atmosphere and
quick day. In the First Flight, Tom Strange, Tim Ellenson, Chad
Ferrell, and Joe Winker posted an astonishing 49. To win the
Second Flight, Doug Wellman, Phil Rae, Judy Peel, and Lennie
Barton posted a solid 61. However, the highlight of the day came
from Ralph Haddock when he made a hole in one on #17!
The tournament could not have been pulled off without the help of many volunteers, donations,
and vendors. We thank everyone that could help be a part of such a great day. NC State’s very
own PGA Golf Management students were abundant throughout the day by helping operate the
event as well as forecaddie for the groups on the golf course.
