Sky prides itself on great sports coverage and commentary. And now, with The 2010 Ryder

Cup coming to Sky exclusively live, in stunning HD, there’s even more reason to follow the game.

High definition draws you into the game, enhancing every drive, chip and putt. But now there are plans to broadcast major golf events in 3D. According to 3D action boffins, golf is one of the sports which benefits most from 3D viewing, giving an alternative to being on the fairway or the green that feels like you’re there without leaving your living room.

With exciting times ahead for golf and the way Sky brings it to your home, we caught up with golfing great Colin Montgomerie…Colin, captaining the European team for The 2010 Ryder Cup must be an incredible feeling? It tops my career achievements.

I think everybody knows how much the tournament means to me. What is it about the competition that makes it so special? Golf is usually an individual sport, so seeing the world’s best pulling together in their respective teams is amazing. Players and fans are aware – and perhaps a little in awe – of the history that has built up since the inaugural match in 1927. The Cup is fiercely contested by adversaries who are also friends and colleagues. There’s team spirit, camaraderie, tension, drama, anticipation – I can’t wait! Which European players have really impressed you this year? There are almost too many to list, but obviously Lee Westwood has reached world number three – following a series of near misses. Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose have also been showing some great form, winning on the US PGA Tour in recent weeks. It has been great to see Welshman Rhys Davies doing so well in the first half of the season, including his first win and a great finish at the Celtic Manor Wales Open. I could go on – Álvaro Quirós, Thomas Bjorn, the Molinari brothers Edoardo and Francesco… I feel privileged to

be captain of one of the strongest sides we’ve ever fielded. How crucial is the return of Tiger Woods for the USA?The world’s number one player is an advantage to any team. I hope he qualifies and plays a big part. But the USA are a strong proposition with or without him.Is the home advantage significant? Absolutely! Not least because I get a say in the course set-up. The home support is like having a 13th player on the team. What’s your fondest Ryder Cup memory? Holing the winning putt in 2004. I was a captain’s pick that year by Bernhard Langer. I hadn’t been playing well but Bernhard believed in me. His decision really helped revive my career – I won my eighth Order of Merit the following year. What do you think HD gives armchair golf fans? The clarity and vibrancy of HD brings an extra dimension. I’ve watched more golf on Sky this year than ever before, checking how European players have been faring.

“Home support

is like having a 13th player

on the team”

“I’ve been commentating on darts since 1977,” says Sid Waddell (left). “The game has

never been stronger. Phil Taylor (below) revolutionised the sport by having new darts designed by a Ministry of Defence boffin in 2008. He’s forced the other players to raise their game. I can think of 50 adjectives for him, but I’m running out. He’s taken the game to new levels.

“James Wade is as naturally gifted but I think he lacks Taylor’s concentration. Simon Whitlock is the perfect height to beat him. Another outsider is Paul Nicholson. I predict that there will be at least three nine-darters at the next World Championship.

“ When it comes to

coverage, Sky really knows how to deliver action and excitement. High definition and super-slow-mo replays means you get stunning shots of the spin these guys put on their arrows.

“Darts is now attracting a far younger crowd, including a lot of lasses. The crowd is a big part of today’s game. It’s a bit like a circus atmosphere. Humorous commentary is important too. The PM David Cameron – who once referred to Sky+ as ‘one of the great inventions of our

time’ – once sent a letter in saying how much

he’d enjoyed the commentary.

Commentating with Stephen Fry for the Premier League darts final

back in May was the best two hours I’ve spent in

a commentary booth in my life!”
