FEBRUARY MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Our next monthly membership meeting will be
held at the Club House, Tuesday February 19
at 7:00 PM.
NEW KEYS Gate keys for the 2019 season will be available
($5 each) to paid-up soloed members at the
February meeting. The gate lock will be
changed after the meeting. As in the past,
Board members will carry a supply of keys
with them throughout the season, for the
benefit of members not able to make it to the
meeting.
SPECIAL GUEST PRESENTATION
AT THE FEBRUARY MEETING
Captain Greg Wallace USN (Ret), close friend
of Mark Kikta, will speak about his ejection
from an S-3 Viking aircraft on the flight deck
of the USS Enterprise in 1998 when an EA-6B
Prowler slammed into his aircraft taxiing on the
flight deck. He will have video to show and
will talk about the details that ensued. This
will be a great opportunity to ask questions and
learn firsthand about the real-life dangers of
carrier aviation. Greg Wallace is a graduate of
the University of Tennessee and Yale
University. As an S-3 Viking pilot he served as
a Maintenance Officer, Executive Officer and
Commanding Officer in various S-3B
squadrons. He retired in 2010 after a
successful 28-year Naval career, and currently
resides in the Pax River area.

BG&E bill was $144. Currently we have 129
folks paid for 2019.
Gate Lock. Mark Kitka had the 2019 lock in
his hands and promised to have the keys for the
February meeting.
Fall Clean-Up Day. Tim spoke about doing a
fall cleanup, in addition to our traditional
Spring Clean-Up Day. Date is TBD.
Regional Full-Scale Events. Bill Setzler
talked about the regional full-scale events he
brought up at the previous Board meeting
(addressed in last month’s newsletter)
Show and Tell. Eric Holmes showed off three
beautiful rubber powered free-flight models: a
Phantom built from a kit, a half size Zombie,
and a tiny (12-inch wingspan) Tiger Moth.
Both Zombie and Tiger Moth were scratch-
built from plans. All three were covered with
tissue.
Alan Goodman showed a Herr Piper Cub.
Rubber powered free flight converted to
electric. Alan described adding ailerons, servos
and moving tail surfaces. The model is covered
with translucent yellow film.
Raffle and 50-50. Peter Curtis won a $25
Hobby Hangar gift certificate in the raffle; and
Devon Mills was not present to claim $123.50
in the 50/50 drawing.

FROM THE FEBRUARY BOARD
MEETING.
Gate Locking Mechanism. Bob Gensler and
Tim Williams have designed an improved gate
locking mechanism that will improve security
and hopefully minimize opportunities for other
users of the property (Parks Maintenance,
BG&E, et al.) from inadvertently locking our
members in / out of the field. The mechanism
will replace the current chain configuration of
daisy-chained locks. It will consist of two
overlapping metal-plate assemblies - one
attached to each side of the gate center posts -
with lobes accommodating up to five locks.
Bob and Tim will shortly be fabricating and
installing the device. See the photo of Bob’s
wood prototype below.
Field Toilet Service Provider. The Board is
investigating an alternative source for field
toilet maintenance that could provide the same
service for significantly less cost. Our current
provider costs over $100 per month during the
winter and over $200 per month (servicing two
units) during the summer.
Field Materials. Tim will arrange to have his
source bring another truckload of asphalt
millings for road maintenance to add to the pile
adjacent to the road to the house. (This is
SPECIAL RAFFLE PRIZE. For our
electric flyers and particularly our EDF
aficionados, we will offer a special raffle
prize at the February membership meeting: a
Sky Flight Hobby F-22 ARF, (right)
for twin 70 mm EDFs and 9-channel radio.
The model features retractable gear and a
180° vectored thrust capability. Raffle
tickets will be the usual $1 each or 6 for $5.
The prize was donated by Harry McCormick.

essentially free to the club). Related to this,
Rick suggested we rent a small tractor / loader
for a day (for ~ $400) to move and spread the
material on the road. We will also be bringing
some discarded railroad ties from the yard next
to Tim’s workplace in Baltimore, for
landscaping / runoff control at the field.
Mower Maintenance. As part of our annual
spring maintenance for the mowers, Tim will
attempt to utilize his workplace connections to
purchase oil filters, and perhaps motor oil, by
the case for the mowers at a favorable price.
Gator Maintenance. We have also purchased
a new DPDT toggle switch that controls the
electric motor for the Gator’s hydraulic dump.
This will be installed as weather permits.
Fence-Line Receptacles. In the April
timeframe, a team led by Bob Gensler will be
installing 120V AC receptacles along the
fence-line. Bob fabricated the necessary
fixtures last season.
AMA, FAA Visit. The planned visit by AMA
District IV Vice President Jay Marsh and an
FAA UAS representative, to bring us up to
speed with the latest UAS regulations and other
subjects of interest, has been postponed due to
the recent government shut-down. We will let
everyone know when a date and time is
established for the meeting.
WANTED: FUTABA TRANSMITTER
Wanted to buy. Futaba 8UA transmitter. Must
have a good (no wrinkling, chips) chrome face
panel. Would consider a non-working
transmitter. Steven Whitecoff,
ATTENTION NEW MEMBERS. If you are
reading this newsletter in black and white after
delivery via the US mail, and have an e-mail
account, please send me your e-mail address to
receive the newsletter via e-mail. You’ll get it
sooner and in color, and you’ll be saving the
Club money. Also, if you don’t see your AMA
number next to your mane in the Current
Members list below, that means we don’t have
it in our database. Please e-mail it to me at
[email protected]. Thanks.
Wood prototype of the gate locking mechanism. Hex bolts shown would be replaced by up to four additional locks by others (BG&E, Parks, et al.).
