ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM ___________________________________________________

The Artist in Residence Program at Great Falls Public Schools was the first Artist in Schools Program adopted in Montana, beginning in 1972. When Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art opened it’s doors in 1977, the district was already a solid partnerand plans were underway to provide a studio for artists who were selected for the position.

In 1979, Paris Gibson Square began to partner with GFPS on the program. A selection committee of Museum and District Staff isformed annually to review applications, and an artist is selected to assume the position for one full school year.

Today, the selected Artist works with each of the 14 Great Falls Public Schools Art Staff to teach courses in the Art Department for Kindergarten through 12th grade students. The Artist in Residence provides insight into the life of a working artist while sharing knowledge in content areas that students and staff may not be familiar with.

In addition to teaching requirements, Resident Artists are expected to maintain a studio at Paris Gibson Square; building a body of artistic work that will be exhibited at the Museum at the end of their residency. Residents also teach museum classes and assistthe Education Department with special projects.

Over the past 4 decades, Artists have come from all over the country – providing thousands of students, staff and museum patrons insight into the Art World that goes far beyond the borders of Montana.
