PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) education to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists. Residency-trained pharmacists are responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

Residents will be held responsible and accountable for acquiring competency in the areas of: • Patient Care• Pharmacy Research• Leadership and Management• Teaching, Education, and Dissemination of Knowledge• Management of Medical Emergencies • Advancing Practice and Improving Patient Care

Eight residency positions are available for 2017-18, with two positions designated for residents interested in acquiring advanced ambulatory practice skills. Our comprehensive program provides training in the fundamentals of pharmacy practice in an integrated health system. An individualized training plan, based on the resident’s knowledge, skills, and interests, is developed and adjusted throughout the year. While developing competence to provide patient-centered care in multiple patient care environments, PGY1 residents acquire substantial knowledge for skillful problem solving and strengthen their professional values.

Moses Cone Hospital offers an ASHP-accredited postgraduate year one (PGY1) pharmacy residency.

Residents may select up to three electives (for example: HIV Clinic, trauma service, stroke team, nutrition support, behavioral health, ambulatory care, oncology, neonatology, or pediatrics). A wide variety of direct patient care training experiences are offered in ambulatory and acute settings. Each resident completes a research project, conducts a medication use evaluation, responds to emergencies like cardiac arrests, learns formulary and safety process management, participates in multidisciplinary committees, and serves on one to two of the ten departmental quality teams. Additionally, all residents provide ACPE programs to pharmacy providers and team-teach a therapeutics course for the Doctor of Nursing Practice program of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The residents, along with a Cone Health preceptor, are responsible for precepting students from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Campbell University. Residents are provided direct patient care opportunities in identifying and resolving drug-related problems while completing required training in internal and ambulatory medicine, infectious disease, nephrology, cardiology, critical care and research, primarily at the Moses Cone Hospital. Ambulatory residents are required to select elective clinical learning experiences in the ambulatory services division of Cone Health, where their experiences may include providing tobacco cessation counseling, testing pulmonary function, and managing chronic diseases such as PVD, HIV, heart failure, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, cardiac arrhythmias, and thromboembolic disorders.

Applicant selection is based on an interview, references, experience, and academic performance.Applicants must apply through the ASHP-sponsored online application program PhORCAS by January 3, 2017 and must agree to abide by the regulations of the Resident Matching Program. A stipend of $47,486 annually will be awarded to members of the 2017-2018 class

About our Pharmacy ServicesOur integrated multi-campus pharmacy division works as a strategic partner with providers to drive medication-related clinical care decisions and business outcomes. We educate members of the clinical team on appropriate and safe medication use. Pharmacists are active participants in the Cone Health Centers of Excellence in cardiology, oncology, neurosciences, behavioral health, and women’s health. Service-based pharmacists obtain medication admission histories; manage and regulate drug therapy; teach patients; conduct research in HIV, oncology, critical care, and cardiology; and supervise technicians. Projects for the coming year include optimizing pharmacists’ documentation in the electronic medical record, increasing patient medication education, developing a comprehensive systemwide specialty pharmacy service, optimizing inventory management through our automated carousels and cartless dispensing model, adding barcode technology to the sterile products preparation area, integrating pharmacists into systemwide Lean teams to reduce waste and improve patient experiences, and planning for moving women’s and neonatal services to the Moses Cone Hospital campus. In addition to the eight PGY1 resident positions, Cone Health pharmacy offers PGY2 residency training in cardiology, infectious diseases, neonatology, oncology, and ambulatory care, and a PGY1/PGY2/MS health-system pharmacy administration program that is affiliated with University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy.
