Magnet Related Activities in PH-DT

• The Magnet Control Project (MCP) was initiated in 1998 with the goal of producing an integrated system for controlling, protecting and analyzing data for the large magnets in the LHC experiments. Common hardware and software have been designed to facilitate the maintenance and operation.

– Today’s Mandate: Preventive and corrective maintenance of MCP systems, On-Call interventions, planning of maintenance tasks during shutdowns. Maintenance of the control software and implementation of PVSS modifications as requested by main users.

• The B-field measurements service provides technical support for magnetic field measurements and calculations, and develops new sensors, readout applications and data analysis techniques for this activity.

• The group has a considerable level of technical expertise in constructing magnets, however due to retirements and transfer of staff it has lost the design and engineering capabilities.

MCP Team

• Currently the MCP team is composed of a project leader and fractions of DT technical staff, who contribute to other projects in DT

– 80% Project leader– 50% Tech as CMS and LHCb expert, and responsible of MCP On-Call Service– 50% Tech as ALICE expert– 80% Tech as ATLAS expert– 50% Controls engineer

• The team runs an On-Call service 24/7, assisted by DSS and magnet experts from the LHC experiments.

• 4 FTE from the PH-02 Field Support Unit are dedicated in average to the project

MSS2Hands-on electronics review

• MCP is run by a small team in charge the maintenance and operation of the control and safety systems of the experimental magnets installed in 4 LHC experiments

• These control and safety systems were developed by the team more than a decade ago; they are based in standard and industrial controls and instrumentation, like PLC logic for the control and FPGA for safety. These systems include some electronic development, mainly related to the magnet safety system for superconducting magnet quench detection.

• The current systems has been working fine during the LHC operation, however they start to be rather old, some electronic components are obsolete, and new control & instrumentation technologies offer more possibilities.

• An upgraded system is now being developed in PH-DT, which includes the electronic interface for the quench detection and temperature measurements. A prototype is currently in production, based on team’s experience and also technology transfer between CERN experts.

• Small magnets (M1 and Compass) will be equipped with the upgraded safety systems in 2013. Based on the operational experience in these 2 projects, the new system will be proposed to the LHC experiments (if possible, still during LS1)

• The aim of this review is to get a second opinion on the electronics aspects of the new MSS2 system from 'outside' electronic experts in order to validate the prototype system and to be able move to the next project phase (construction of systems for LHC).
