The pH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a sample. A pH of 7 means thatthe sample is neutral and reacts neither like an acid nor like a base. Fresh tap water, for example, is approximately neutral. Samples with a pH of less then 7 are acidic,e.g. lemonade, lemon juice or hydrochloric acid. In practice pH values down tobelow -1 are known. An alkaline sample has a pH of more than 7, e.g. stale tapwater, water containing detergents or soda lye. The pH scale reaches values ofmore than 15.

acidic neutral basic/alkaline
The more the pH differs from 7, the more aggressive the sample. For each pH unitthe acidic or basic effects increase by a factor of 10.
pH can be measured by electrochemical pH measuring systems, indicator strips, indicators or colorimeters. Of these only electrochemical measurements provideaccurate results.
Measurements are made with an electrode.
The electrode is an electrochemical sensor which consists of a measuring electrodeand a reference electrode. The voltage at a membrane alters according to the pHof the sample solution. The electrodes normally used today are constructed so thatthe voltage at the membrane is 0 mV when the pH is 7. The more the pH differsfrom 7, the larger the voltage signal produced. The pH meter uses this signal tocalculate the pH.

SenTix®SenTix® electrodesSenTix® – the new electrode system from WTW offers more comfort, qualityand precision
The low-impedance membrane glass ensures that stable measurements arerapidly achieved even at low sample temperatures
The reference electrolyte with its low silver ion content together with thetemperature-insensitive platinum diaphragm prevent interference byprecipitated silver.
SenTix® electrodes are robust and shockproof. A special membrane glass andthe plastic shaft ensure mechanical stability.
SenTix® with liquid electrolyte – the optimized outflow speed rinses the platinumdiaphragm free and prevents contamination by precipitates or dirt even duringchanges in temperature; with new membrane glass for even quicker response.
SenTix® H and HW ground diaphragm electrodes allow the electrolyte outflowspeed at the diaphragm to be altered.
The clever sliding closure prevents the electrolyte from escaping during storage. Waterproof DIN or BNC plugs, either plug head system or with fixed cables,
can be selected.
The clever idea forfilling SenTix®
electrodesAnyone who has to frequently work with pHelectrodes knows about the awkwardproperties of KCl solution:• it climbs up beaker walls,• it penetrates even the finest pores and cracks
and • it crystallizes out leaving an unpleasant-
looking residue.
Topping up the electrolyte solutionof combination electrodes andreference electrodes seldom happens without some dropsescaping and forming harmlessbut nasty-looking crystalline stains
in a very short time. This is why this
should always becarried out on aworking surface. This can evenhappen with the
new range ofSenTix® electrodes,
but far less oftenwhen it is carried out
correctly. But how?
Take the enclosed plastic dropping bottle and:• remove the red cap• cut off tip – if still sealed – as
near the end as possible so thatthe tip can be inserted in therefilling hole of the SenTix®
electrode to seal it off• in order to prevent overpressure
in the electrode squeeze thedropping bottle gently and theninsert the tip into the refillinghole so that the dropped bottleis seated firmly in the refillinghole.
• by releasing and squeezing thebottle several times in succession(pumping) the topping-upprocess can be carried outperfectly without any mess

pHpHpH
In practice working reference buffer solutions are used; theseare obtained by comparing them with primary or secondarymaterials. Normal WTW pH buffers meet these requirements. The uncertainty factor of pH of the particular buffer solution isdocumented by a certificate(see page 184, Services).
