CHEMISTRY PROJECT WORK

A scale for measuring hydrogen ion concentration in a solution , called pH scale has been developed . On pH scale we can measure pH form 0 (very acidic ) to 10 (very alkaline) . pH should be thought of simply as a number which indicates the acidic or basic nature of a solution . Higher the hydonium ion concentration , lower is the pH value.

the pH of a neutral solution is 7. values less than 7 on the pH scale represent an acidic solution . As the pH value increase from 7 to 14 . It represents an increase in OH- ion concentration in the solution , that is , increase in the strength ok alkali . Generally paper impregnated with the universal indicator is used for measuring pH . One such paper Is shown in fig . 2.6

IMPORTANCE OF pH IN EVERYDAY LIFE

ARE PLANTS AND ANIMALS Ph SENSITIVE

Our body works the pH renge of 7.0 to 7.8 . Living organisms cansurvive only in a narrow range of pH change . When pH of rain water is less than 5.6 , it is called acid rain . When acid rain flows into the rivers , it lowers the pH of the water . The survival of aquatic life in such rivers becomes difficult.

THAT IS THE Ph SCALE OF THE SOIL IN YOUR BACKYARD

The plant grow depends on the pH of the soil . If the soil is too acidic than the pH is lower and it is treated with the basic material like quick lime , calcium carbonate m calcium hydroxide . This materials are bases and reduce the acidity of soil.

PH IN OUR DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

Our stomach produce hcl having pH about 1.4 . This acid helped in the degestive of food. The excess acid in the stomach caouse indigestion which produce pain and irritation . To avoid this condition we can take ant acid. Ant acid are mild bases which have toxile effect . As the ant acids basic in nature , it reacts with excess acid and nuetralise it.

PH CHANGE AS THE CAUSE OF TOOTH DECAY

The bactaria present in our mouth breaks down the sugar to form acid as lactic acid. When pH of mouth become lower than 5.5 than acid attacks the tooth enamel (calcium phosphate) and it start getting corrode this is called tooth decay.

TO PREVENT TOOTH DECAY Clean the mouth after eating food . Many tooth paste contain base which nuetralise mouth acid.

SELF DEFENCE BY ANIMALS AND PLANTS THOUGH CHEMICAL

WARFARE

Bee – sting leaves an acid which causes pain and irritaion . Use of a mild base like baking soda on the stung area gives relief , stinging hair of nettle leaves inject methanoic acid causing burning pain.
