Medicines Regulatory Authority

(MRA) Directory

Lists the MRA of all ICP Countries and includes direct links to their web sites,

Medicine Regulatory Authorities (MRA)

• All countries should/may have some kind of institution that regulates pharmaceuticals for

human use. These institutions are commonly referred to as Medicine Regulatory Authorities

(MRA).

• The MRA is generally the institution responsible for the regulation and control of

pharmaceuticals and other medical products within a country.

• In some countries the MRA is its own institutional unit, while in others it usually acts under the

country’s main public health institution, typically the Ministry of Health.

Essential Medicines Lists (EML)

• Essential medicines are medicines that satisfy the priority health care needs of a population.

They are selected with regard to disease prevalence, safety, efficacy, and comparative cost-

effectiveness. They should be available at all times and at accessible prices.

• WHO publishes a model list of essential medicines that contains a core list and a complementary

list. Each country is encouraged to prepare their own lists taking into consideration local

priorities. The latest WHO Model EML, 17th edition (March 2011), can be found here.
