THE American MedicalAssociaon (AMA) has called

prescripon drugs,” the AMA said
in a statement, with adversing
dollars spent by drug makers up

Cut CM red tape, new
report urgesTHE Health Department this
morning released the nal report
from the Independent Review of
Medicines and Medicinal Devices
Regulaon, which “highlights
the importance of cung redtape for the rapidly expanding
complementary medicines sector”.
The review was undertaken by
Lloyd Sansom, Will Delaat and
John Horvath, and makes 26
recommendaons.
The panel has suggested that S3
adversing guidelines be reviewed
to provide for a formal risk-benet
methodology for inclusion in
Appendix H, and also recommends
that the process of pre-approval
of the adversing of therapeuc
goods be replaced by a “more self-regulatory regime”.
See health.gov.au for the report.
Online monitoring soonA REAL-TIME online monitoring
system for codeine products
is likely to be implemented
quickly, according to widespread
enthusiasc responses to the
decision to defer any nal decision
on upscheduling (PD breaking news).
The Pharmacy Guild of Australia,
the Pharmaceucal Society of
Australia and the Australian Self
Medicaon Industry have all hailed
the move as a response to their
“legimate concerns”.
The Health Department saidthe delay allows the Advisory
Commiee on Medicines
Scheduling to scrunise the 127
submissions on the issue - 113
opposing the move to S4 - with any
nal implementaon if required not
eecve unl 2017 at the earliest.
Guild naonal president George
Tambassis said the Guild would
now move quickly to implement
a real me recording system for
codeine sales, with the Guild also
supporng mandatory warnings
and increased consumer educaon.
ASMI ceo Deon Schoombie said
the deferral reects the views of
the great majority of stakeholdersand will allow consumers to
connue to have appropriate
pharmacy access to codeine-
containing medicines.
And PSA naonal president Joe
Demarte urged that the extra
me allowed by the deferral be
used to prepare a Regulaon
Impact Statement on the proposal,
as recommended in the PSA
submission.
