Indigenous drug risksTHE Medical Journal of Australia

has released an ar cle highligh ngconcerns about therapeu c drugsafety for Indigenous Australians.

It notes that drug developmentprograms o en don’t includeIndigenous Australians and fewrandomised control trials havebeen performed in this popula on.

“A en on is given to repor ngthe safety of medica ons in olderpeople and paediatric popula ons,and in pregnant and breas eedingwomen. However, in Australia, there are no speci c repor ngrequirements for ethnic groups, including Aboriginals and TorresStrait Islanders,” says the ar cle.

It concludes that the lack of arobust evidence base means “thepoten al for harm is real.”

Panadol Osteo patient pushCHRONIC pain pa ent group

Painaustralia has wri en to healthminister Sussan Ley urging her toreconsider the removal of PanadolOsteo from the Pharmaceu calBene ts Scheme.

The controversial move hasbeen widely cri cised, with thePharmacy Guild last week ( PD 12Jan) claiming the delis ng was amistake because the normal PBSprescrip on for the analgesic istwo packs per month, whereas the

decision was based on the price ofa single pack.

In this latest developmentPainaustralia ceo Lesley Brydoncites concerns that pa ents mightseek alterna ve PBS-subsidisedtherapies with poorer safetypro les than Panadol Osteo, suchas NSAIDs or opioids.

“Such a move by pa ents wouldclearly add to the complexityof their condi on and negateany poten al cost savings togovernment and the consumer,”Brydon said.

“Painaustralia is also concernedabout the increased costs forpa ents arising from the delis ngof Panadol Osteo, which is currentlythe recommended rst linetreatment for people su ering pain

secondary to osteo-arthri s.”Prior to the delis ng concessional

pa ents paid $7.52 per month fortwo packs of Panadol Osteo, butsince 01 Jan the price has nowincreased to $14 monthly and ontop of this the purchases no longercontribute to the pa ent’s SafetyNet “and that means an added

nancial burden.“We can expect even higher

prices in the near future as a resultof the forecast price increase by

the medicine’s manufacturer,” thePainaustralia chief added.

Brydon said her organisa on isbacking recommenda ons by othergroups such as Arthri s Australiaand the Australian RheumatologyAssocia on that the delis ng ofPanadol Osteo be reconsidered, pending a “formal review ofthe clinical prac ce guidelinesfor its use in osteoarthri s andconsidera on given to how othere ec ve management strategiescan be adopted”.

Pharmacists key for kidneysPHARMACISTS who screenedat-risk pa ents for chronic kidneydisease (CKD) discovered previouslyunrecognised disease in more than15% of pa ents tested, according toa study published this month in theCanadian Pharmacists Journal .

The research is claimed to beone of the rst studies to provide“concrete evidence of the bene tsof allowing community pharmaciststo order laboratory tests and seepa ents’ test results,” according toauthor Yazid Al Hamarneh.

720 pa ents were enrolledin the study, which tested anonline decision-making toolcalled the “CKD Pathway” tohelp primary care providers todecide which pa ents to test andgive appropriate lifestyle advice, medica on or referral.
