Aggregation and Modularity // Site Planning and Form Adaptation

Your collages and models act as both a means of research into the neighborhood and an opportunity to explore new spatial qualities that can inform your future designs. We will extract from your models forms and figures to create a module for singular living. Our module will be not simply be a static element repeated across a site, but thoughtful aggregated to create a community of singular dwellings.

We will begin to explore methods of aggregating these dwelling and also opportunities for variations on the form to create subgroups that can better characterize the people and space of the community. Ultimately, the community of singular dwellings will be a vibrant, active neighborhood where similarities and differences are celebrated both physically and socially.

1// PART 1: Transformation: Framework for Form

• Identify qualities of space and form from your 3D object (Phase 3.2) to carry over to a dwelling for a singular person

• extract figures, profiles, sections, massing to inform your dwelling unit• each dwelling will have a max footprint of 350 SF

• Create module or massing for repetition• develop a min. of 4 different module or massing options at 1/4” scale• each massing is a type of massing that you think can be repeated for 9-12 singular living

2// PART 2: Modulation: Form to Form(s)

Adapt to physical site and environmental conditions• Sites will be given in studio• Consider immediate and surrounding environment - effect to orientation and massing• Develop ideas which site/landscape can contribute to your design

Develop mode of variations• Define type of aggregation and modifications: growth, nesting, coupling, nodal,

networked, sequential, major/minor, ect.• Create three different living conditions based on translations of form

Begin to understand structure, circulation, and program• Flow and access inside and outside of dwellings• Adjacency of dwellings to each other• Framing and systems for each dwelling

• Site to be given in studio: Series of 4 adjacent vacant Chicago lots (each approx. 25’ x 125’)• Site Setbacks:

• Front: 12’-0”• Rear: 12’-0” (no habitable or principle buildings in this area)• Side (from lot line): 6’-0”• Height: 25’-0”

• (9-12) XS Houses, each max 400 SF net (total of all occupiable levels, includes stair), can have more than one level

• Units must share at least 25% of a surface with another unit• (1) visitable unit (see below definition)• Can use stairs, no ladders

• ** Visitability – shall mean that a residential unit includes the provision of at least one accessible, grade level entry on an accessible route (no stepped entry and no elevated ramps), a 36- inch or greater clear circulation path through the first floor of the unit, including all interior doorways, and at least a half-bath on the first floor with a 30- inch by 48- inch clear floor area to accommodate a person in a wheelchair and allow that person to close the door.

• 3 parking spaces, (1 spot to be accessible)• Curb cut for Uber/Lyft pick up/drop off• Secure bike area – holds approximately 10 bikes• Trash and recycling receptacles – 5 bins• Design for site and exterior with softscape or hardscape that integrates with your housing

concept: NO grass, NO concrete• Consideration for light and ventilation• Each dwelling is intended for one resident; resident can have visitors

• Determine type of person and community based on research and context• Program: twin bed, bathroom, small kitchen (more details to come)

Deliverables:

• Research site and environmental conditions• sketches/diagrams of conditions that affect your design• Visit site, document through sketches and photos

• Draw site plan drawing @ 3/32” scale or 1:150• Build individual site model @ 3/32” scale or 1:150• Determine type of residents/community based off of research
