The PhD (Nursing) degree was first instituted on September 27,1979. Curricular revisions are conducted regularly in order toconform to the constantly changing times, the latest of which wereapproved by the Board of Regents on February 1, 1995. The mainpurpose of the program leading to the Doctor of Philosophy (Nursing)is to strengthen and deepen the intellectual and scholastic capabilityof students in order to enhance the theory and science-basedpractice of the profession.

The academic year is divided into 2 semesters of 16 weekseach, excluding registration and final examination periods. The 1stsemester starts in June and ends in October, while the 2nd semestercovers the period from November to March, with a two-weekChristmas vacation in December. The summer session of 6 weeksfollowing the 2nd semester is usually in April and May.English is generally used as the medium of instruction. A full timestudent’s normal load is 12 -15 units per semester and 6 units duringsummer; a part-time student enrolls in half of these. The tuition fee isP990.00 per unit, the library fee is P1,050.00 and other fees isP350.00 per semester. A student with a load of 15 units in asemester matriculates P16,250.00 on the average while a foreignstudent pays an additional Educational Development Fund of US$500.00 (US $100.00 for residency only) for every semester. Thereis a processing fee of P300.00 for Filipino applicants while interestedforeigners are charged US $30.00. Application materials for thesecond semester will be accepted until March 31, 2007. The followingare the grade requirements for each student to be of good standing inthe program: 1) general weighted average of 1.75 or better, 2)weighted average of 1.75 or better for the major/required courses,and 3) no grade of 5.00 in any academic course. A maximum of 7years is given to a student to finish the program.

Living accommodations for students ’ maybe provided in privately-owned housing units/dorms/apartment hotels. Dorms offer lodgingand/or board. There are privately-owned eateries around the school.

The following are the minimum NGOHS requirements:1. Good scholastic record from any recognized institution of higher

learning

2. Bachelor’s degree in nursing

3. MA in Nursing or other health- related field. If master’s degree isnot in Nursing, the applicant must take relevant courses in themasters level and pass the qualifying examination

4. At least 2 years of experience as a professional nurse in ahospital/community setting or nursing research unit

5. At least 2 published works

6. Duly accomplished Application Form (available at the GraduateOffice or through www.upm.edu.ph/gradoffice ) together with thefollowing documents:

original copy of the official Transcript of Records2 recommendations from former professors, supervisors oremployersreceipt of processing fee paid at the UPM Cashier's Officecertified true copy of college diploma with the seal of the
