Interdisciplinary PhD GrantThe PhD research will be carried out in collaboration withresearch groups of the PhD programme in"INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY".See http://www.dottorato.polimi.it/index.php?id=242&L=1for further information.

The research aims at developing advanced data-analyticmethods to make inference and interpret vector fieldsfrom high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD).CFD simulations are customarily used to analyze complexsystems, but no techniques exist to enable CFD in themachine-learning (ML) domain, mainly because of thedimensionality and complexity of such data. Our mainapplication scenario is the diagnosis of nasal andparanasal pathologies requiring surgical corrections: aclassic example where outcomes (or labels) are assignedby human/experts. In this field CFD is on the verge ofrevolutionizing the clinical practice, as it can expose toclinicians the functionality of such a complex system likethe human nose, on a patient-specific basis. However, theability to rationally translate the complex CFD informationinto personalized surgery planning is still lacking. Ourstudy ¿ in close collaboration with the Ear-Nose-Throat(ENT) group of the University of Milan ¿ will develop data-analytic methods to support ENT specialists in planningthe less invasive and most effective surgery on a case-by-case basis. A second attractive scenario concerns the use

of ML techniques to improve the turbulence modelling inindustrial-type CFD, where engineers routinely choose thebest Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) model oradjust its parameters depending on their personalexperience.

Methods and techniques that will bedeveloped and used to carry out theresearch

Our research aims at combining CFD and ML techniquesin an innovative approach to analyze the behavior of acomplex system, which in the considered scenario isspecified as the velocity and temperature field in thehuman nose. High-fidelity CFD, where turbulence modelsare not necessary, will be used to investigate thefunctional properties of the system, an unconventionalapproach in ML, where the systems are typically analyzedfrom their input/output data. Moreover, ML techniques willenable the use of CFD in scenarios where diagnosisoutcomes cannot be described by equations, but arerather provided by human/experts, as typical in themedical field. We foresee the following research activities:i) definition of the best high-fidelity CFD techniques tosimulate the complex system via Direct NumericalSimulations (DNS) ii) definition of features to be extractedfrom very large vector fields provided by CFD. Both data-driven approaches from image processing and ML (e.g.clustering and deep autoencoders) and gray-box models(e.g. Finite-Time Lyapunov Exponents) will be pursued. iii)Formulation of inference problems and feature selection.

Monthly net income of PhDscholarship (max 36 months)

€ 1325.0In case of a change of the welfare rates during the three-year period, the amount could be modified.

Context of the research activity

Motivation and objectives of the researchin this field

New concepts are continuously emerging for thepropulsive configuration of aerial vehicles, especially inthe UAS and light aviation application fields. A major partis played by hybrid-electric aircraft. A need arises for theavailability of methods capable to support theconceptual/preliminary design and analysis of suchvehicles, departing from traditionally establishedprocedures for conventionally-driven aircraft that cannotbe immediately extended to hybrid-driven realizations. Athorough assessment of numerical predictions and flighttest data is sought. When a validated, reliable frameworkis established, a fundamental step forward is theextension from light aircraft to heavier General Aviationand regional liners. In this regard, the determination ofscalability relations and parameters is crucial. Theproposed research is framed within a 4-year H2020 EU-funded project led by Pipistrel (a leading light aircraftmanufacturer) and involving several universities, researchcenters and SMEs.

Methods and techniques that will bedeveloped and used to carry out theresearch

The candidate will develop novel numerical techniques forthe design and analysis of hybrid-electric aircraft based onaccurate models of the propulsive system, representativeof steady and unsteady operational conditions. Theresearch is also aimed at developing a general frameworkto scale design parameters, performance, cost, andenvironmental impact across different aircraft weightclasses.

€ 1325.0In case of a change of the welfare rates during the three-year period, the amount could be modified.

Context of the research activity

Motivation and objectives of the researchin this field

The application of innovative materials and structuralconcepts in modern vehicle structures introduces newchallenging tasks in the design methodologies.Composites materials with polymeric or ceramic matrices,as well as hybrid and smart structures are difficult to bedesigned and verified by using classical stress-basedanalysis. In such cases, the analysis of the structuralintegrity requires more complete and multi-scalenumerical approaches, based on non-linear constitutivelaws, which can take into account defects, residualstresses induced by manufacturing process, developmentof subcritical damages and statistical distribution ofproperties. The objective of the research is a furtherdevelopment of existing approaches and constitutive laws,at different scale levels, and their effective application inthe design process of real-world advanced composite andsmart structures.

Methods and techniques that will bedeveloped and used to carry out theresearch

The research will involve a possible development of newconstitutive laws for the thermo-mechanical response ofmaterials, and the application of already developedmodeling techniques for the design of structuralcomponents, within a multi-scale approach and a stronginteraction with experimental activities.

Research Field: TURBULENT FLOWS, INSTABILITY AND CONTROL

Monthly net income of PhDscholarship (max 36 months)

€ 1325.0In case of a change of the welfare rates during the three-year period, the amount could be modified.

Context of the research activity

Motivation and objectives of the researchin this field

This is a wide research field with instability and turbulenceas its main themes. Turbulent flows are all-encompassingin applications, and their numerical simulation (at variouscost and accuracy levels, ranging from RANS to DNS) isessential in the design process of virtually any systemwhere fluid is in motion. Flow control is a young researchfield where one tries to improve the performance of a fluidsystem by external manipulation (e.g. actuators) or simplyby improved design (shape optimization). In either case, properly choosing the optimization strategy is a keyelement for a successful flow control. Sometimes flowcontrol acts on a developing flow to hinder its instabilities;other times the control strategy aims at modifying thecyclic behaviour of a dynamical system.

Methods and techniques that will bedeveloped and used to carry out theresearch

From the numerical standpoint, this research field typicallyemploys a number of techniques spanning from DNS toLES and RANS, and a broad range of powerfulmathematical tools. The group is active in developing andimproving numerical tools in DNS (e.g. highly efficientparallel solver) and LES (e.g. developing a new hybridRANS/LES model; studying the grid and p-adaptivity for aDiscontinuous Galerkin Finite element). From theexperimental viewpoint, the group has in the recent pastspecialized in experimental measurement of turbulent skin-friction drag reduction, and has succeeded to measurethe (so far) largest ever reduction of pressure loss in apipe via active flow control. Moreover, we develop plasma(DBD and corona) actuators that attract considerable

interest from industries. From the standpoint of controllaws, that need be derived from a profound physicalinsight, we are leading the research of energy-efficientcontrol laws for turbulent skin-friction drag reduction inwall-bounded flows. We employ several optimizationstrategies, including those based on the adjoint operator.

Educational objectives

Deep understanding of the physics of a near-wallturbulent flow is a common educational goal. Dependingon the specific project, additional objectives may becontrol theory, or experience in laboratory work, actuatordevelopment, high-level computer programming, high-performance computing.
