Brothers and Friends,
If nothing else, thisnewsletter must contain
one vital message: CalAlpha misses you. Were
curious who you are, whatyoure doing, and how
you got there since yougraduated from Cal, andwere curious about all the
same things from yourold fraternity friends andpledge brothers.
Because of this, weve treated you to an
Alpha Star full of excitingdevelopments in the
chapter. First and fore-
most: were planning onhavingreal alumnievents this semester
events you would showup for, events that wouldtruly let us build thatbridge from us to you
(SEE PAGE 4). Keep aneye out for that, becauseour new alumni secretary
is already doing a stellar
job, and I cant wait to seewhat he puts together.
Secondly, wewant you to see whereweve come in the past
couple of semesters: wehave 52 members includ-
ing Phikeia this semester,
a result of recruiting 23new members during the11-12 school year; we
have a 3.48 GPA, the se-cond best in the IFC and
the third best in the wholeGreek system; and lastsemester we staffed a
Walk for ALS event, aneffort which we wish tofollow up with events this
semester, including fund-raising late-night barbe-cues and an Iron Phi 5k.
Even within our plot ofland weve made im-
provements, repainting
the front deck, renovat-ing the basement, and
restoring our plumbing,gutters, and roof.
Third, we want to
share with you all of thedevelopments coming tous in the year 2012. Be-
sides all of the brother-specific stuffan en-hanced scholarship pro-
gram, reaching out to
more sororities, and hav-ing more frequent andbetter brotherhoodeventswere taking
steps to make the house abetter place for alumni tocome, reminisce, and
build a connection withthe current brothers.
Were repaintingthe in-terior of the house thissemester; were exploring
options for new furnitureand/or entertainment in
the living room; andcountless home improve-ments are in HousingCorps plans for the near
future.
2012 is an excitingyear to be a Phi; its an
exciting year to be aPhikeia; its an exciting
year to be an alumnus. Were looking forward to
seeing you again because, well, we miss you.

I slipped through the crack in myhardwood floorOnly to land where I slipped beforeWith claws still clutching for thatpearly Door,Unsullied and adorned with the nameI once bore.
Temptation has enticed my carcass towar,Disarming reasons capacity to re-

In the land of Reath-there are TreesWhere money grows, sprouting free.
They have green bills as leavesAnd trunks of GoldFlowers RubiesTheir sap, wine of Old.
Yet no man of Reath lays claim to
these treesSo they destroy one another, kill asthey pleaseTheir logic is simple, almost divine,"The less men there are, the more ismine."
And I may add, all the whileThese trees stand untouched,Yet around them Bodies strewn- de-composing
Become fertilizer.

The House Band
With the addition of the backdeck to the house, a few brothers
and I decided it was only appropri-ate to bring back the Phi Delt band!Composed of a guitar, vocals, drums, a bass, and keyboard ourband covers a variety of songs in-cluding She Loves You by theBeatles and Respect by ArethraFranklin. Although we have onlyperformed at our house we are hop-
ing to raise money for furnishingsby playing at local venues. It is truly
rewarding to play music for ourbrothers and alumni, so hopefullyyou will get a chance to hear us playat alumni events.

After another successful rush
week featuring on-campus
recruiting efforts and a popu-lar tea and hookah night, the
brothers of Phi Delta Theta
have inducted seven new
pledges. After a brilliant fall
rush, Humza, Aaron, Ed-
ward, George, Jason, Mi-
chael, and Rex are looking
forward to build upon a great
year so far. The guys are very
different, but seem to get
along very well together. Alt-
hough their personalities dif-
fer vastly, they all in our eyes
embody the qualities neces-
sary to become a Phi. Ourevents this spring brought
many new people to the
house, but more importantly
brought the brothers together
in a way that allowed us to all
become a big part of rush.
Each brother had the oppor-
tunity to talk with a number
of potentials that walked into
the house for our evening
BBQ, bowling trip, and
broomball. One of the most
memorable and enjoyable
nights was our formal dinner
night, which we decided todo a little differently by hav-
ing our dinner cooked by one
of our very own brother Ben
Kahriman. As always, the
brothers and Phikeia were
able to come together as one
for the first time this semes-
ter to celebrate the months to
come. I am looking forward
to seeing our new inductees
grow into worthy brothers of
Phi Delta Theta over the
coming pledge semester un-
der the leadership of Phikeia
Educator, brother Fernando
Lopez, and I am sure that
they will take their place as
leaders of our chapter in the
future.

Last semester over 30 of the
brothers headed over to Heather
Farm Park in Walnut Creek at 6:30
in the morning to volunteer in the
2011 Walk to Defeat ALS. Thebrothers were on site for over 6
hours, helping to set up, register
walkers, distribute petitions, show
walkers around, and clean up.
Overall the event was a great suc-
cess and a rewarding, meaningful
day for everyone. The goal for
Spring 2012 is for California Alpha
to become a Iron Phi Chapter by
raising $10,000 dollars for ALS. In
past years the chapter has alreadyraised a total of $1,450.01. To
reach this goal, the fraternity plans
to host several fundraisers through-
out the semester, including a Hot
Dogs for Lou BBQ, a restaurant
fundraiser, and a 5k run.
For more information regard-
ing these events, including the time
and place, please contact brotherPatrick Fuster, alumni secretary. In
order to reach our goal we will need
your support, and we highly wel-
come your attendance as an oppor-
tunity to meet the current brothers
and support a cause central to the
mission of our fraternity.

A Rebirth of Our Ritual
Brothers,
As some of you may be
aware, and some more may not,
performance of the Ritual and
reading of the Bond in the Califor-
nia Alpha chapter has waned in
recent years, so I am pleased to
announce that our President,
brother Steven Shuken, and I are
working together to reverse thisalarming trend and return the Ritu-
al and the Bond to a prominent
position in the lives of the broth-
ers. As it has been noted in meet-
ing, it is the Bond that binds us
together as a fraternity, without
which we are only a group of peo-
ple living together in the same
house who get along well. Here-
fore, we have decided that the Ritual
be performed and the Bond read at
every chapter meeting hence, as is
proper. Soon as well I hope to
mend the broken corner of the altar.
Speaking further of the Bond,
ours is in fact one of the few copies
of the Bond signed by an original
founding father still in current circu-lation. Understandably, after 139
years the book is beginning to wear
and brother Lindley's beautiful pen-
manship beginning to fade. For this
reason we plan to retire our current
copy by the semesters end where-
upon it shall be sent to International
Headquarters where it can be better
preserved for future generations.
Additionally, upon special request to
International Headquarters, I have
received the honor of permission to
inscribe the new copy of the Bond
myself. We have received the mate-
rials necessary, and I shall work my
best to have it completed as soon as
possible while employing the pa-
tience and time required to producea transcription worthy of the words
contains within.

Home Improvementthe room looks much better thanbefore and has allowed the base-ment to become, once again, a
great place to hold our weeklychapter meetings.
We also got another bigand very necessary house im-provement out of the way lastsemester when the roof was com-pletely replaced. The brothers areplanning to repaint the first floor
of the house in the next couple ofweeks, which will provide a muchneeded face-lift to those rooms. We
really appreciate all the alumni help wehave received to improve the house sothat it remains a place we can all enjoyand be proud of.
Yours in the Bond,

Brothers,
I am excited to tell youabout the improvements that
have been made to the house re-cently. Last semester new benches
were built to line the walls in thebasement. The pledges took onthe task of painting those benchesand repainting the floor in thebasement. We still have somepainting left to do down there but
