Philosophy of Education
The whole world opened to me when I learned to read.
Mary McLeod BethuneAs a Library Media Specialist, my role will be to uphold the mission of the library
program, which is to provide access, equity, opportunity, quality, and social justice as the
fundamental rights of students as stated in the Council on Teacher Education Conceptual
Framework. My professional goal is to be a highly engaging school librarian, one who makes
sure students and school staff clearly understand the value of the school library, beyond
checking out books. I will work to augment student learning by not just focusing on mastery
of skills, but by also providing them with exposure to a variety resources that may be needed in
their future endeavors in life. Afterschool and on weekends, I envision myself providing library
outreach services to disenfranchised members of the community by providing library
workshops and tours. I strongly believe it is my responsibility to work to ensure that the core
values of teaching (for staff) and the core values of learning (for students) in a diverse society as
described by the Council on Teacher Education are achieved. This is achieved by promoting
service to all, promoting the use of technology, and providing inquiry based learning
opportunities for students. Other values include enhancing the sense of community among
staff, families, and the local community through the provision of collaborative, innovative,
resource seeking and information sharing. It is my responsibility to work to ensure that these
values are inherent in every aspect of my work. This includes in the development of lesson
plans, identifying relevant resources for the implementation of lessons, and working as a
member of the school team, while also with working with families and community members as
a resource for information. One of my goals and personal contributions to the field of library science will be to
redefine the limiting and conservative image that many youth and families, of color or from
families with low incomes, have of librarians and the library. It has been my observation, that
these families dont always feel comfortable or welcome when attempting to use the library. I
will create a space that is non-traditional, open, welcoming and fun! I will implement
programing that is engaging and serves the needs of local families, and that is also conducive to
youth development and the needs and interests of youth as well. I will dispel the stereotypical
images of a librarian as being unhelpful, unfriendly, mean and stern by being engaging, helpful,
knowledgeable and eager to share the information and resources within the library setting.
While the world speaks readily about the achievement gap in America, I, and the
library in which I work, will be the closer of the opportunity gap which is the real culprit in
todays society. Under my watch, the library will be seen as the place to go to seek information,
answers to questions, and learn about the world beyond the local neighborhood or community.
Having lived my entire life using wheelchair for mobility, I have firsthand knowledge of
how it feels to need resources that are not readily accessible. I know the importance of being
able to advocate for what you need for life and personal survival as well as having the ability to
garnish the support of others. I know first-hand how the lack of access, equity, opportunity,

quality, and social justice, as mentioned above, can and will impact the life and academic
accomplishments of students. My purpose as a librarian is to make certain that every child and
family will see the library as the great equalizer for access and equity of education and
information. I will strive to ensure that those who feel disenfranchised from their school or
community library will come to view the library and its services as a barrier free environment in
which they can travel the world. I want others to feel that same excitement I feel when I amreading a good book or researching a topic of interest on the internet or in the library. I will be
their tour guide to an educational, engaging, and fulfilling journey of acquiring new
knowledge and skills. My goal is to not fulfill an achievement gap, but to help narrow an
exposure and opportunity gap by providing excellent library services to all.
