US Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.),

Chairman of the US Congress

Joint Economic Committee, re-

leased the following statement

after yesterday’s announcement

from the US Dept. of Commerce

that the trade deficit in goods

and services decreased to $46.0

billion in February from $52.5

billion the previous month.

“While the narrowing of the

trade deficit means that trade

was less of a drag on growth in

February, it would be more reas-

suring if our exports had ex-

panded to a greater degree than

they did. Our economy remains

vulnerable to the unfair trading

practices set in place by China.

Currency manipulation is threat-

ening our trade advantage and

harming our American workers.

“The Currency Exchange Rate

Oversight Reform Act of 2011 is

vital legislation that aims to pro-

tect our workers and manufactur-

ers from currency manipulation.

Countries who engage in such

detrimental practices should be

held accountable. The Senate

passed the bill by wide margins

and I encourage our House col-

leagues to follow suit.

“As our nation continues to re-

cover from the recession, law-

makers must make every effort

to support our workers and en-

sure there is an even interna-

tional playing field.”

Casey: Trade Deficit’sDrop Is Small Comfort

Health Dept.: Volunteers,Sign Up For EmergenciesThe Pennsylvania Dept. of

Health is encouraging residents

to join the State Emergency Reg-

istry of Volunteers in Pennsylva-

nia during “Volunteer Week,”

being observed statewide Apr.

15-21.

“Whether making a difference in

their own community or travel-

ing elsewhere to help during a

disaster, Pennsylvanians are not

afraid to put the needs of others

before their own,” said Dr. Eli

Avila, Secretary of Health. “As

we all saw during last year’s

devastating floods, we cannot

underestimate the value of vol-

unteerism.”

Gov. Tom Corbett proclaimed

Volunteer Week to honor the

many acts of volunteerism per-

formed every day by Pennsylva-

nians. The proclamation praised

the State Emergency Registry of

Volunteers in Pennsylvania, also

known as SERVPA.

Coordinated by the Department

of Health, SERVPA is a secure,

statewide database of registered,

pre-credentialed volunteers who

can be called upon during major

disasters or public health emer-

gencies. Approximately 10,500

medical and non-medical volun-

teers are currently registered.

The ultimate goal of SERVPA is

to engage volunteers in local

emergency service and respond

to requests for emergency assis-

tance from other states. It was

established in response to a fed-

eral order to enhance the nation’s

disaster-response capability.

Pennsylvanians interested in reg-

istering to volunteer through

SERVPA should visit online at

Daily WafflesFrom Joe Sbaraglia (The Waffleman)

ALLEYS - are the areas be-hind row houses used by thefire or police departments incase of emergencies when theyrequired access to the rear of ahome. They are also consid-ered a water course for rainwater to drain toward thesewer. But they were also used

by almost every kid in SouthPhiladelphia. In order to gofrom one place to anotherplace, the alleys were used asshortcuts. The alley appearedto make the route shorter, eventhough it really wasn't. Alleysstill exist today, of course, butwith crime on the rise, most of

them have been blocked offwith locked gates to deter thecriminals. These gates alsodeny the use of the alley tothose who used them as short-cuts.

National Volunteer Week was es-

tablished in 1974.

In an official proclamation, the

Governor urged Pennsylvanians

to comply with the Dept. of

Health’s request. He wrote, “In

special recognition of the impor-

tance of volunteers across Penn-

sylvania, I, Tom Corbett,

Governor of the Commonwealth

of Pennsylvania, do hereby pro-

claim Apr. 15-21, 2012, as Vol-

unteer Week in Pennsylvania. I

strongly encourage all Pennsyl-

vanians to help me honor and

thank our remarkable volunteers

for their many achievements and

generosity.”

Collins Responds ToNew Legislative MapDan Collins, candidate for the

172nd Dist., responded to the new

district map: “”Once again, the

citizens of Mayfair are being dis-

enfranchised. This is the fourth

time Kevin Boyle has tried to get

me out of the race. The voices of

the people will be heard, regard-

less of the political games Kevin

Boyle is playing.”

Collins ran for this seat in 2010,

when his nominating petitions

we unsuccessfully challenged by

Boyle. When the new legisla-

tive- district maps were ap-

proved by the State House ear-

lier this year, both Collins and

Mayfair were removed from

Boyle’s district. When this map

was ruled unconstitutional by the

Supreme Court of Pennsylvania,

Dan Collins filed petitions to run

again. Once again, Kevin Boyle

sued to keep Dan Collins off of

the ballot and lost.

Yesterday’s map removes Dan

Collins from the 172nd Dist. and

again disenfranchises the neigh-

borhood of Mayfair by splitting

it into two districts as well as

moving Boyle into Montgomery

Co.

Collins continues, “My main

concern is what exactly Kevin

Boyle has against the people of

Mayfair. However, it seems there

is a personal issue from Mr.

Boyle, too. I’m not sure why

Kevin Boyle is so afraid of me,

but he sees me as a threat.”
