1. Philadelphia Inquirer - Blackhawks batter Flyers, 4-0

Sam Carchidi

CHICAGO - The momentum the Flyers built with a dramatic comeback win in Dallas three nights earlier did not carry into Tuesday night at the United Center. Instead, the Flyers looked lost during an uninspired opening period in which they allowed three goals in a 2-minute, 6-second span en route to a 4-0 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks. Patrick Kane - whose name will live in Flyers infamy because of a certain goal in the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals - had a pair of power-play tallies as Chicago (4-0-1) remained undefeated in regulation. Emergency starter Antti Raanta, making his first appearance since April 12, made 32 saves and notched his second career shutout - and the first by Chicago against the Flyers since Tony Esposito on Jan. 18, 1976. When the Blackhawks weren't breaking down ice on an odd-man rush, they were cycling in the Flyers' zone for long periods as they built a 14-1 shots domination at the start of the game. "We were like deer in the headlights in the first period," coach Craig Berube said after the Flyers, who had a three-game points streak snapped, slipped to 1-3-2. "The first period defensively was brutal," said Jake Voracek, who failed to score a point for the first time in the season's six games. Chicago fired 43 shots at goalie Steve Mason. "We had a horrible start, and Mase was pretty much the only guy playing his game out there," defenseman Mark Streit said. Mason made four difficult saves in the first half of the opening period to keep the game scoreless. He stopped Brandon Saad's point-blank attempt, but Brad Richards' shot trickled through the goalie's pads and stopped in the crease, where the hustling Saad knocked in the rebound. That gave Chicago a 1-0 lead with 8:06 left in the first. Just 32 seconds later, Kane scored on the power play, jamming in a rebound off the back boards while Michael Raffl was in the penalty box for kneeing.

Page 3: Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS ...flyers.nhl.com/v2/ext/01 - Flyers NHL Clips/10-22-14.pdf · Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS

After Raffl missed a golden scoring chance in front, Bryan Bickell made it 3-0 with his first goal of the season, finishing off an odd-man rush by firing a left-circle shot that beat Mason to the far side, just inside the right post. The Flyers seemingly received a break because Corey Crawford, the Blackhawks' standout goalie, was unable to play because of an upper-body injury that became worse Monday night. But Raanta, who played well in two games against the Flyers last season, made things look easy Tuesday. The 25-year-old Finnish goalie, making his first appearance of the season, denied Claude Giroux from in front to keep the Blackhawks ahead, 3-0, with 5:15 remaining in the middle period. Less than two minutes later, he turned aside Matt Read from the doorstep, and he brushed away Giroux's left-circle blast with four seconds to go in the second. "He's worked hard in practice to be ready for the challenge," Chicago assistant Kevin Dineen said. Kane got inside position on Nick Grossmann and scored on a rebound, putting the Blackhawks ahead, 4-0, with 16:10 left. Chicago had been in a 1 for 12 power-play slump, but Kane's second goal made them 2 for 4 on the night. Mason (0-3-1), who took a 3.78 goals-against average and .865 save percentage into the night, said that "sometimes you have to find ways to make saves you're not supposed to make." But once again, he got little support from a defense that is missing its top defenders: Kimmo Timonen (blood clots) and Braydon Coburn (injured left foot). Coburn missed his fifth straight game. After the morning skate, Berube said Coburn was "as close as he can get to being ready to go." The coach said he was contemplating going with seven defensemen, but wanted to make sure Coburn was OK after pregame warm-ups. After taking part in warm-ups, however, Coburn said he didn't feel right and was scratched from the lineup. The Flyers have allowed four goals per game without him. On Wednesday in Pittsburgh, the Flyers play the league's highest-scoring team, so they would seem much more formidable if Coburn is ready to return. If not, this three-game road trip is not expected to end pleasantly.

2. Philadelphia Inquirer - Flyers give Mason little support in rare blowout loss

Sam Carchidi

CHICAGO - For all their faults - and there are plenty - the Flyers have been competitive in every game this season. Until Tuesday night. Their defense was a rumor. Their attack made emergency starter Antti Raanta, in his first start since April, look like the second coming of Tony Esposito. Blackhawks 4, Flyers 0. It marked the first time all season the Flyers weren’t tied or ahead at some point in the third period, and Raanta (32 saves) became the first Chicago goalie to blank the Flyers since Esposito in 1976. Chicago scored three goals in a 2:06 span of the first period and it was good-night, Gracie. (See story.) Afterward, Flyers goalie Steve Mason, who faced 43 shots, played good soldier and tried to accept some of the blame. “Sometimes you have to find ways to make saves you’re not supposed to make,” he said. Truth be told, Mason was left hung out to dry. The Blackhawks outshot the Flyers, 14-1, to start the game, and their 43 shots were the second-most they ever recorded against the Orange and Black. The first period, I think we got embarrassed by how we played,” captain Claude Giroux said. “We didn’t win one battle. We’ve got to do a better job in front of Mason. The second and third, we started playing a little bit better, but we had too many mistakes that cost us.” “Mase was pretty much the only guy who played out there,” defenseman Mark Streit said of the first-period onslaught. So much for the belief that the Flyers would carry the momentum from Saturday’s 6-5 comeback win over Dallas into Tuesday night. Breakaways. Mason has a 3.83 GAA and .878 save percentage….Chicago coach Joel Quenneville, whose team is 4-0-1, called it the Blackhawks’ best game of the young

season. “I thought we were better in all aspects of our game,” he said….Giroux and linemates Jake Voracek and Michael Raffl combined for 15 shots _ five by each player…..Voracek had his season-starting five-game points streak snapped….Ray Emery is expected to face the Penguins Wednesday in Pittsburgh….After being outshot 14-1 to start the game, the Flyers (1-3-2) outshot Chicago, 31-29, the rest of the way….Former Flyer Patrick Sharp had two assists. 3. Philadelphia Inquirer - Flyers Notes: Umberger relishes chance to take on

Penguins again

Sam Carchidi

CHICAGO - Flyers winger R.J. Umberger is returning home Wednesday to Pittsburgh, excited to renew the heated rivalry with the team he adored in his childhood, the high-scoring Penguins. "It's going to mean a little more coming back and being a Flyer again," Umberger said before Tuesday's game in Chicago. "It's something I'm anxious to be part of again, like earlier in my career." Umberger, who grew up in the Pittsburgh suburb of Plum Borough, spent the first three years of his NHL career with the Flyers before being dealt to Columbus and playing six seasons with the Blue Jackets. He returned to the Flyers in the offseason deal that sent Scott Hartnell to Columbus. The Flyers have been dominant in Pittsburgh in recent years. Including the playoffs, they are 10-2-1 all-time at the Consol Energy Center, and 8-1-1 in the regular season. "It's a true rivalry. I grew up in it, so I know how Pittsburgh fans feel about Philly," Umberger said. "And being a part of Philly for several years, I know what that's like, too. I know my parents have felt it. Wearing Philly jerseys and getting things thrown at them in the playoffs one year. It's heated, it's fun. I'm good friends with a sportswriter in Pittsburgh, Mark Madden, and that's all he does every day in the offseason - talk about how much he hates the Flyers." Umberger, 32, is still devoted to the Steelers and Pirates, but his hockey allegiance has changed. "I grew up a big Penguins fan . . . but not anymore," he said. Attack of the Penguins

Pittsburgh has a league-high six players averaging at least a point per game, led by Sidney Crosby (nine points in four games). The Penguins lead the NHL with an average of four goals per game. Pittsburgh's power play ranks first in the NHL, clicking at a staggering 47.1 percent (8 for 17). The Flyers entered Tuesday with the league's No. 2 power play (31.8 percent). Breakaways Chicago's Dan Carcillo, an ex-Flyer, said his fiancee is expecting their first child - he will be named Austin, and is due Nov. 30 - and it has changed him. "You're playing for a family now - two other people and the dog," he said. "You have a little extra incentive.". . . . The Penguins will wear gold jerseys Wednesday for the first time since 1992. . . . In 48 career games against the Flyers, Crosby has 30 goals and 75 points. . . . Vinny Lecavalier (foot) may resume skating later this week. Flyers Notes: GOING HOME Flyers winger R.J. Umberger is excited to play the Penguins, the team he adored as a boy. D3. 4. Philadelphia Daily News - Flyers' Umberger accidentally cut Stars' Nemeth

Frank Seravalli

CHICAGO - R.J. Umberger knew something was up when he finally climbed to his feet and heard both benches screaming. It was his first shift of the game on Saturday night in Dallas. There was a routine play on the boards just outside the Flyers' blue line. Umberger went to play the puck when Stars defenseman Patrik Nemeth barreled down on him. The two collided. It didn't appear to be all that different than one of the other 44 hits. "I just remember us falling, kind of off-balance," Umberger said. "I know I went down awkwardly."

Page 7: Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS ...flyers.nhl.com/v2/ext/01 - Flyers NHL Clips/10-22-14.pdf · Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS

Focused on the puck, Umberger's body twisted upon impact with Nemeth's body. He was facing away from Nemeth, so when he got up again, he resumed play. By that point, both benches were hollering and banging their sticks. And it wasn't to celebrate a big hit. Players on the Flyers' bench were gasping at what they had just witnessed. "I stopped skating," Umberger said. "I was like, 'Wow, what the hell is going on?' " As he fell to the ice on his side, Umberger's left skate flew in the air and sliced Nemeth's right arm, just above where he is protected by his glove. Umberger's skate was as high as the top of the boards. Nemeth immediately threw off his right glove in pain. Umberger's skate blade cut through just about everything in its path: Nemeth's long-sleeve shirt, multiple layers of skin, and several tendons. Nemeth underwent surgery less than 24 hours later in Dallas on Sunday. His season was over really before it could even begin. "Patrik is done for the year. Maybe, I guess a possibility would be playoffs, but it was a real severe laceration," Stars coach Lindy Ruff said. "I think it involves everything. When I say 'severe,' it's probably an understatement. I don't want to go into too much detail. "First and foremost, I just hope for his sake, that it's a full recovery." The freak accident has been in Umberger's thoughts since it happened. Crazily enough, this is not the first time one of Umberger's skates has sliced through an opponent's wrist. Nearly the exact same incident happened on Nov. 26, 2010 in Columbus. Umberger was playing for the Blue Jackets. He got caught in a similar scrum along the boards when he tangled with Red Wings star Mike Modano. Modano, then 40, required surgery the following day for his bloody and gruesome injury just to restore hand function. Luckily, he missed just 3 months of action, but was limited to 40 games in what turned out to be the final season of his Hall of Fame career. Nemeth, 22, may not be so lucky. He has just 13 NHL games under his belt. Depending on the damage and success of his surgery, he may not recover enough to make it all the way back. Flyers forward Eric Wellwood retired last year at the age of 24 after a freak skate cut severed tendons and an artery in his leg while playing with the Phantoms in 2013. "I've been thinking about it," Umberger said, shaking his head. "You feel for the guy. It's a strange, unfortunate situation. It's just one of those things, you don't feel it hit your skate.

Page 8: Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS ...flyers.nhl.com/v2/ext/01 - Flyers NHL Clips/10-22-14.pdf · Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS

"It's a freak thing. It could happen to anyone of us at any time - not only that, but it could happen in your neck or anywhere." For Umberger, Saturday night was a strange twist in what's already been a trying return to the Flyers. Entering last night's game in Chicago, he had just one point in five games. His ice time (13:57) is nearly 3 1/2 minutes below his career average (17:15), and the Flyers haven't even been killing many penalties, which would limit his time on ice. He is hoping a return to his native Pittsburgh tonight will light a spark. The Plum Township native - about 15 minutes outside downtown Pittsburgh - got a taste of a rivalry when he was with the Blue Jackets for the last few seasons, but it wasn't the same as his first run with the Flyers. "This is a true rivalry," Umberger said. "I grew up in it. I grew up a Penguin fan. I know how all the Pittsburgh fans feel about Philly. My parents have felt it, wearing Philly jerseys and getting things thrown at them in Pittsburgh during the playoffs that one year [in 2008]. It's something I'm anxious to be a part of again." Umberger will kick off his game-day today with an interview with his Plum High School's television team, his way to give back to its Make-A-Wish Foundation telethon. 5. CSNPhilly.com - Instant Replay: Blackhawks 4, Flyers 0

Tim Panaccio

CHICAGO -- Different year, same script. The Flyers come to the Windy City and get blown out by the Blackhawks. Last year, it was 7-2 with Ray Emery in net. This time it was a 4-0 embarrassment at United Center on Tuesday night as Steve Mason got roughed up once again. He’s given up four or more goals in three of his five starts. Patrick Kane scored twice on the power play. Chicago got a dominating performance from its third line of Brad Richards centering Brandon Saad and Bryan Bickell.

Page 9: Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS ...flyers.nhl.com/v2/ext/01 - Flyers NHL Clips/10-22-14.pdf · Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS

The Blackhawks did all their necessary damage within 2:06 of the first period, building a 3-0 lead while hammering the Flyers with 19 shots that first period. Antti Raanta made his season debut for the Hawks after starter Corey Crawford re-aggravated an upper-body injury during the morning skate. Excluding preseason, Raanta had not played a game since last April 12 against Nashville. Yet the Flyers made life far too easy on him. Then again, they didn’t control the puck enough to test him, either. Notable goals The Blackhawks' struggling power play got its first power-play goal from Kane as part of a two-goals-in-32-seconds sequence early that gave Chicago a 2-0 lead. A bad kneeing penalty from Michael Raffl set it up. Patrick Sharp’s shot from the high slot caromed off the back boards right to Kane for a shortside, right-post stuffer that Mason should have had covered. The goal forced coach Craig Berube to burn his timeout. Goalie report Raanta, who didn’t have much work in net last spring during the 'Hawks' deep playoff run, easily outshined Mason. Raanta had 32 saves. Shots The Flyers didn’t get one until 7:36 into play with Wayne Simmonds firing high from the left boards. The 'Hawks were outshooting the Flyers 14-2 at one point in the first period. Chicago had 43 shots in the game. Saves Raanta had two on Claude Giroux in the second period that could have got the Flyers going. Streak Jakub Voracek’s five-game point streak to begin the season ended. Power play The Flyers looked timid and indecisive during a critical first power play that carried 1:54 over to the second period. There were no point shots that created a play at the net. Chicago cleared the zone three times. Penalty kill That the Flyers allowed two power-play goals to a team that is in the bottom 10 in power-play efficiency is poor. Chicago was in a 1-for-12 slump and finished 2 for 4. Scratches

Page 10: Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS ...flyers.nhl.com/v2/ext/01 - Flyers NHL Clips/10-22-14.pdf · Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS

Braydon Coburn (left foot) took warmups and it appeared he would play as the seventh defenseman. Something must have bothered him because he was a last-minute scratch. Vinny Lecavalier (left foot) and Jason Akeson (healthy) also did not dress. Up next The Flyers play back-to-back and meet the Penguins in Pittsburgh on Wednesday night to close out this three-game road trip. 6. CSNPhilly.com - Poor 1st period dooms Flyers in loss to 'Hawks

Tim Panaccio

CHICAGO -- Team captain Claude Giroux said it was “embarrassing.” Coach Craig Berube said his team looked like “deer in the headlights.” Jakub Voracek said the Flyers' first period was “brutal.” Any of the above describes the Blackhawks' 4-0 spanking of the Flyers on Tuesday night at United Center (see Instant Replay). “Our first period, offensively, was brutal,” Voracek said. “Twenty shots on our net is too many. Chicago can score and that’s exactly what they did.” The Flyers were totally outclassed in this one right from the get-go, giving up 19 shots and three goals in a 2:06 span to hand the game over in full retreat (see highlights). “The first period we got embarrassed. We didn’t win one battle,” Giroux said. “We've got to do a better job in front of [Steve] Mason. We’re playing good and then too many mistakes out there cost us.” Even worse, the Flyers didn’t really challenge backup goalie Antti Raanta, who had not played a game that counted since last April. “Get skating and play,” Berube said he told his team between periods, behind 3-0. “You can’t stand around and watch them pass the puck and skate, especially a team like that. We were deer in the headlights that first period.” How could the Flyers look so flat and lack any semblance of confidence coming off an emotional overtime win over Dallas a couple days earlier? “Very surprised, very surprised,” Berube said.

Page 11: Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS ...flyers.nhl.com/v2/ext/01 - Flyers NHL Clips/10-22-14.pdf · Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS

Chicago’s first marker saw Mason, who was under siege facing 43 shots, make consecutive stops on Brad Richards only to have the rebound trickle under him off Brandon Saad’s poke that actually speared Mason to create room. Then a kneeing penalty from Michael Raffl gave the 'Hawks a power play. Patrick Sharp’s shot from the high slot caromed off the back boards to Patrick Kane for a shortside stuffer at the right post that Mason should have had covered. Kane had two power-play goals as the Flyers' sagging PK units boosted the slumping 'Hawks, who were in a 1-for-12 slump until this game. “They scored a couple on the PP, but I don’t think that is why we lost the game,” defenseman Mark Streit said. “We had a horrible start. [Mason] was pretty much the only guy out there playing his game. It’s just not acceptable, a start like that. You do that against a team like that, you are going to get punished.” Chicago made it 3-0 at 14:00 on a great pass from Saad to Bryan Bickell, who went top shelf on Mason. That was it. Giroux had a few chances in the second period, but Chicago controlled the puck on its sticks most of the stanza. It wasn’t until the third period when the Flyers generated anything. “Overall, we didn’t have enough,” Berube said. “We didn’t skate with them. We didn’t compete with them.” None of this is to take away the simple fact that the Blackhawks have an obvious talent edge on the Flyers. They are among the elite clubs general manager Ron Hextall talked about this past summer, saying he longed for the day when the Flyers were again part of this same group. “That’s an excuse,” Berube said when asked about the talent gap. Although the Flyers had their most shots (13) in the final period, they couldn’t dent Raanta. Voracek, who saw his five-game point streak end, nearly scored late. “For me, it wasn’t over until the buzzer went off,” Voracek said. “We know we can score. Second period we had good opportunities, third period we had opportunities and good shots on net. But we can’t lay it on the offense because we have to be responsible defensively and we didn’t do that.”

7. CSNPhilly.com - Mason's season start not what he or Flyers envisioned

Tim Panaccio

CHICAGO – Six games into the Flyers season, Steve Mason has given up four or more goals in five starts. That’s not the kind of start either he or the Flyers envisioned after performing so well last season in net. Tuesday’s 4-0 beating at the hands of the Blackhawks at United Center saw him under attack with 43 shots, nearly half in the opening period when the Hawks scored three times. Two of those goals-against were from the Hawks' slumping power play units (ranked 19th). “I think with their power play, it was only a matter of time,” Mason said. “We have to do a better job. Our penalty kill has to be a strong point. Right now, it’s not.” The Flyers can’t get position on people down low, can’t get pucks on their sticks, and when they do, they can’t clear. At the same time, Mason has been unable to deliver a momentum save that might change their fate. He lost this one in the first period but the majority blame fell on his teammates. “Terrible, terrible period and everybody in the room knows it,” Mason said. “The coaching staff made that clear. It was pretty obvious that was a crap period.” Mason’s inflated goals against average hit 3.83. “He got bombarded in the first period and held us in there,” coach Craig Berube said. That was of little comfort to Mason. “Sometimes, you got to stop the puck,” Mason said. “Sometimes you got to find ways to make saves you are not supposed to make.” During the third period, team captain Claude Giroux came over and offered him encouragement. Giroux wouldn’t divulge what he said.

Page 13: Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS ...flyers.nhl.com/v2/ext/01 - Flyers NHL Clips/10-22-14.pdf · Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS

“I can’t tell you that,” Giroux said. “We have Mason’s back. If it weren't for Mase, I don’t know what the score would have been. “We have to stick together when it’s tough times. We’ve got to battle through it. We’ve done it before. We’re not going anywhere. We’ve got to stick together.” Coburn out Defenseman Braydon Coburn was expected to play and even took warmups on the ice but was pulled. He has a left foot injury that has now seen him miss the last five games. “He came in after warmup and said he didn’t feel right,” Berube said. “So he couldn’t play.” Loose pucks This was the first time this season where the Flyers were not tied or ahead at some point in the third period. …The last time the Flyers were shut out here was Jan. 18, 1976 when they lost 2-0 at Chicago Stadium. Tony Esposito stopped all 35 shots. ...The 43 shots by the Blackhawks are the second-most they’ve ever had against the Flyers. They had 47 during a 5-5 tie on Oct. 29, 1992 in Chicago. 8. Delaware County Times - Raanta makes 32 saves as Blackhawks blank Flyers

Matt Carlson

CHICAGO — Once again, Antti Raanta filled in flawlessly for Corey Crawford. Raanta made 32 saves to earn a shutout in his first start of the season, and Patrick Kane scored two power-play goals to lead the Chicago Blackhawks past the Flyers, 4-0, Tuesday night. Raanta was sharp as he subbed for Crawford — Chicago’s No. 1 goalie who is out day-to-day with an upper-body injury — to record his second career shutout. Among his saves were two point-blank stops on Claude Giroux and one on Matt Read late in the second period “I found out this morning,” Raanta said regarding his start. “You’re always ready when you come to the rink.”

Coming up big when Crawford gets hurt is nothing new for Raanta. The 25-year-old Finn started 10 games in a row last season after Crawford suffered a groin injury in a Dec. 8 game against Florida. The Blackhawks went 7-1-2 during that stretch. “He was real solid, square, confident,” Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said. “He was definitely in control tonight.” Chicago’s Brandon Saad and Bryan Bickell scored along with Kane in a 2:06 flurry late in the first period to stake the Blackhawks and Raanta to an early lead. “We have struggled a little bit with goal scoring, so it was good to see that guys were shooting a lot and we got nice goals in the first period,” Raanta said. “It helped of course.” Besides their first goals this season, Saad and Bickell each had assists as Chicago’s third line, centered by Brad Richards, clicked and the Blackhawks improved to 4-0-1. Richards, who signed as a free agent last summer following a contract buyout by the New York Rangers, set up Saad’s goal to earn his first point as a Blackhawk. “The Richards and Saad line tonight was very good for us,” Quenneville said. “When we get rolling in all the lines, we get that predictability and familiarity. Hopefully, we get that pace.” Flyers goaltender Steve Mason made 39 saves. He was back in net for his fifth start in six games despite being pulled after two periods in the Flyers’ come-from-behind 6-5 overtime win at Dallas Saturday — their only victory. Mason might have been the Flyers’ best player in this one, especially in the first period when Chicago dominated. “We had a horrible start,” Flyers defenseman Mark Streit said. “Mase was pretty much the only guy out there playing his game. It’s just not acceptable having a start like that, and if you do you’re going to get punished.” The Blackhawks came out strong for the third straight game. Chicago outshot the Flyers, 19-9, in the first and connected on three of five shots during a flurry late in the period. “You can’t stand there and watch them pass the puck around and skate, especially a team like that,” Flyers coach Craig Berube said. “We were like deer in the headlights in the first period.” Saad opened the scoring 11:54 in. Mason made flashy, close-in saves on Saad and Richards, but then Saad outmuscled the Flyers’ Michael Del Zotto to the net and tucked in a loose puck from the goal line after Richards centered it.

Kane made it 2-0 with a power-play score 32 seconds later. He swatted in the puck from the left side of the net after Patrick Sharp’s shot from the blue line caromed off the back boards. Bickell extended the lead to 3-0 with 6:00 left in the period when he motored down the slot and ripped a shot over Mason’s shoulder. CHICAGO — Antti Raanta made 32 saves to earn a shutout in his first start of the season, and Patrick Kane scored two power-play goals to lead the Chicago Blackhawks past the Philadelphia Flyers 4-0 on Tuesday night. Chicago's Brandon Saad and Bryan Bickell scored along with Kane in a 2:06 flurry late in the first period. Raanta was sharp as he stepped in for Corey Crawford — Chicago's No. 1 goalie who is out day-to-day with an upper-body injury — to record his second career shutout. Among his saves were two point-blank stops on Philadelphia's Claude Giroux and one on Matt Read late in the second period.

10. Camden Courier-Post - Flyers fresh out of comeback magic

Dave Isaac

CHICAGO – The shooting gallery was open in the Flyers' end from nearly the opening faceoff until the final buzzer. Forty-three times, the Chicago Blackhawks fired pucks at Steve Mason. Four made it by him in a 4-0 defeat. The Flyers have had lopsided shooting efforts before and still came back. They had erased multi-goal deficits in the third period before. Against the Blackhawks, though? Not gonna happen. "For me it wasn't over until the buzzer went on," Jake Voracek said. "We can score so we've got to keep it going.Second period we had a lot of good opportunities. Third period we had a lot of good opportunities. We had a couple good shots at the net. It just didn't go in today. We can't rely on our offense. We've got to be responsible defensively and we again didn't do it today. We're not gonna win too many games like that." Tuesday's loss was the first time this season the Flyers weren't at least tied in the third period against their opponent. The Flyers were hoping not to have to pull the comeback card again, trying to get the forwards to backcheck harder and help out a defense corps that has come up weak so far this season. "You can blame the forwards. You can blame the Ds, but we're out there as a unit of five," defenseman Mark Streit said. "It wasn't the forwards. It wasn't the D. It was everyone tonight." The Flyers have had bad starts before. In fact, they've almost exclusively had bad starts and still lived to tell about it. The Blackhawks were too much to handle, though. They've had 130 shots on net in their last three games. So, how do the Flyers clean up their defensive miscues? "That's a good question," Voracek said. "We've tried to figure it out since Game 2. We had a pretty solid game defensively in Boston (to open the season). Individual effort along the boards, defensive zone in the battles, we're losing too many battles in the defensive zone. They get it up to the D and there's a shot and I don't think we're strong enough in front of our net."

Page 18: Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS ...flyers.nhl.com/v2/ext/01 - Flyers NHL Clips/10-22-14.pdf · Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS

After the first 14 minutes of the game, the Flyers were already down a trio of goals, hoping to use more of the comeback magic. Last season they set a franchise record for third-period comebacks, but it's hard to do that when the team is outshot in the final stanza. "It doesn't matter how many goals we're down," Streit said. "We can always come back. It didn't happen tonight." Even worse than not coming back was that things seemed to get worse and worse for Mason. At the intermissions, the Flyers offered words of condolence to their goalie off the ice. They certainly weren't helping him on it. "The guys are supportive, but at the same time it's my job to stop the puck," said Mason, whose save percentage rose from.865 to .878 in defeat. "Sometimes you have to find a way to make the saves that you're not supposed to make." "We were watching tonight," Streit added. "We were puck-watching and when you (do that against) the Blackhawks, you're not going to win the game." 11. Camden Courier-Post - Mason hung out to dry as Blackhawks blank Flyers

Dave Isaac

CHICAGO – The feeling of quicksand was familiar. In the early part of this season, Steve Mason and the Flyers have been there plenty. One bad defensive gap turned into another. A dirty goal turned into a three-score deficit. It didn’t take long for the Flyers to be in over their heads and another loss to be imminent. Mason didn’t play in last year’s drubbing in the Windy City, but the result was the same: a bad Flyers loss in which the goalie got little help. This time, the Chicago Blackhawks won 4-0. For the first half of the first period, the Flyers actually hung in there. Their forwards backchecked to help out defensemen that were out of position or had gaps that allowed fast Blackhawks forwards to get behind them. It was the other side of the ice that was a problem, though. When the Flyers had the puck, they missed the net with their shots. It took them until 7:30 of the first to finally toss one into goalie Antti Raanta’s breadbasket for an easy save.

Page 19: Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS ...flyers.nhl.com/v2/ext/01 - Flyers NHL Clips/10-22-14.pdf · Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS

Corey Crawford was supposed to get the start for the Blackhawks but didn’t even take part in the morning skate, instead nursing an “upper-body injury.” It didn’t matter. The Flyers tested Raanta, who hadn’t played since April, 32 times. Each time he made the save. Then again, this goalie got help. When the Blackhawks were able to weather a weak storm by the Flyers’ offense midway through the first period, they turned it into a goal. Brad Richards took a shot from the right-wing circle that squeaked through Mason’s 5-hole and sat in the crease a few inches shy of the goal line. Luke Schenn was unable to hold Brandon Saad at bay, and the Blackhawk speared Mason’s leg to get a better angle at the puck and put it home for his first of the season. “It was a shot from the side, and it was sitting underneath me,” Mason said. “Just watching the replay, he pushed me, and I think the puck was still loose, but he pushed me and upended me, and they were able to put it in.” Only 32 seconds later, with Chicago on a power play thanks to a needless kneeing penalty by Michael Raffl, the Blackhawks struck again. Patrick Sharp fired the puck off the back boards in a spot where Patrick Kane had position to put it past the left leg of Mason when it came back out to the goal line. Before the game, Mason’s save percentage ranked 52nd among 59 goalies who had played at least one game. With 39 saves on 43 shots, many of them on back-door plays where he had to get from one post to the other in a hurry, he was the only reason things weren’t worse. “Mase was pretty much the only guy playing out there,” defenseman Mark Streit said. “It’s just not acceptable having a start like that. If you do it against a team like that, you’re gonna get punished. We did tonight, and it’s not the way we can play.” Flyers coach Craig Berube called a timeout after Kane’s goal, hoping to gather composure and reverse the momentum. His team managed two shots on goal before the onslaught continued. Another odd-man rush into the Flyers end gave Bryan Bickell his first goal of the season on a one-timer from Saad. Pierre-Edouard Bellemare was trying to backcheck and help the outnumbered defensemen but was too slow. It was a theme that continued through the night.

Page 20: Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS ...flyers.nhl.com/v2/ext/01 - Flyers NHL Clips/10-22-14.pdf · Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS

“Terrible period,” Mason said. “Everybody in the room knows it. The coaching staff made that clear. It was pretty obvious that was a crap period.” Mason was left out to dry in the second period, too. He made 10 of his saves in the middle stanza. The Flyers didn’t help the cause allowing two more power plays to Chicago. Lucky for them the Blackhawks’ power play is somehow in the bottom third of the league despite all the talent. The Flyers managed to outshoot the ’Hawks 10-8 in the second period, although it didn’t feel like it. They still looked like a team on its heels reacting to a faster squad. Mason’s reflexes just happened to be a bit faster. “He had (39) saves,” Jake Voracek said. “It’s hard (to watch). Defensively we were brutal. Twenty shots (in the first period) on the net is too many. Chicago can score, and they did.” In the third period the power play struck again for Chicago. Kane scored a second time on a rebound with Nick Grossmann unable to clear the front porch. Mason stopped the initial shot by Duncan Keith, but the Flyers goalie lost the rebound in front of him. The Flyers had a chance to at least make a little noise with a power play with 8:17 remaining, but they mustered only two shots. Mark Streit actually had a slapshot get through Raanta, but Brent Seabrook was there to sweep the puck away before it got to the goalline. Thanks to the help Raanta got, the Flyers were shut out for the first time this season. So far in his second full season with the Flyers, Mason hasn’t gotten that kind of support. Consol Energy Center has been a house of horrors for...the home Penguins. Since the building opened in August 2010, the Flyers are 9-1-1 in the regular season. 2. Penguins coach Mike Johnston has never lived the Flyers-Penguins rivalry. Tonight will be his first game against the Flyers. Most recently he was the coach and general manager of the Western Hockey League's Portland Winterhawks. Earlier in his career he was an assistant coach for the L.A. Kings and Vancouver Canucks. "There's gonna be lots of emotion (Tuesday) night. It's a rivalry," Johnston told reporters in Pittsburgh. "It's also two teams that have had great battles against each other. From my perspective, I'm really excited about it. As a coach you come into a game and you know your players are gonna have emotion." 3. The Flyers are still hoping to get a better hold of their scoring balance in the early going. They have allowed 3.83 goals a game while scoring 2.83 goals per game. "We want those numbers to be different," Jake Voracek said. "Obviously it's a good thing that we're scoring goals, but it's not a very good thing that we've got 3.8 goals against

Page 23: Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS ...flyers.nhl.com/v2/ext/01 - Flyers NHL Clips/10-22-14.pdf · Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS

every game. We've got to make sure we work on that, but it's a good thing we're scoring goals because without scoring goals you can't win the game." 4. Steve Downie will play on the other side of the Flyers-Pens rivalry for the first time. Through four games on a line with Blake Comeau and Nick Spaling, Downie has no points and 15 penalty minutes. "I like being on this side," Downie told the Penguins' website. "It's going to be a fun game. I'm looking forward to it. We just have to match their intensity level and play the smart way." 5. Expect Ray Emery to get the start between the pipes. He has a 6-4-2 career record against the Penguins with a 2.86 goals-against average and a .892 save percentage. Marc-Andre Fleury will go for the Pens. He is 0-2-1 in his last three decisions against the Flyers with a career record against the Flyers of 24-15-2 with a 2.85 goals-against average and .901 save percentage. 13. NJ.com - 5 reasons Flyers were shut out by Blackhawks

Randy Miller

PITTSBURGH - The Flyers were down big early Tuesday night at the United Center and never recovered in losing 4-0 to the Chicago Blackhawks. The loss left the Flyers 1-3-2 heading into another tough road game Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Here are 5 reasons why the Flyers were blanked in Chicago: 1. BRUTAL FIRST PERIOD The Flyers trailed 3-0 after 20 minutes and the score could have been worse. They didn't get their first shot on net until 7:30 into the game and were being outshot 14-1 after Patrick Kane scored a power-play goal at 12:26 to make it 2-0. "Terrible ... terrible period," Flyers goalie Steve Mason told reporters afterward. "Everybody in the room knows it. The coaching staff made that clear. It was pretty obvious that was a crap period." 2. PK IN A FUNK A Blackhawks power play that had been struggling was 2-for-4 against a Flyers' penalty-killing unit that was great for four games before stinking it up the last two. Chicago has

Page 24: Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS ...flyers.nhl.com/v2/ext/01 - Flyers NHL Clips/10-22-14.pdf · Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS

supreme firepower on its PP with Jonathan Toews, Patrick Sharp, Duncan Keith and Kane on the ice at the same time, but the Blackhawks went into the game just 3-for-21 on the power play. Against the Flyers, Kane scored 5-on-4 goals in the first period to make it 2-0 and in the third to close the scoring. The Flyers' PK needs to be a lot better. It had killed off nine of 10 opponent power plays to start the season, but now has been burned for four goals on seven chances in the last two games by Dallas and Chicago. 3. GOALIE NOT COMING UP BIG When the Flyers played poorly in front of their goalie last season, Mason often made a bunch of a great saves to give them a chance to win. Thus far this season, he's been hung out to dry way too much, yet hasn't made enough spectacular saves to bail his team out. The result on Tuesday was Mason letting in four goals on 43 shots, including three of 19 in the first period. For the season, Mason's 3.83 goals-against average is the second highest among goalies who have played at least three games. His .878 save percentage is third lowest. "Sometimes you've got to find ways to make saves you're not supposed to make," Mason said. He's right. 4. DIDN'T BURY CHANCES Good offensive teams make the most of their opportunities, and the Flyers often do. They didn't Tuesday even though the Blackhawks had backup Antti Raanta in goal due to star goalie Corey Crawford being sidelined with an upper-body injury. As bad as the Flyers played in the opening period, they misfired on good chances to make it a 3-1 game in the second. Michael Raffl and Claude Giroux had five shots on net each - some of them very good scoring opportunities - yet came up empty. 5. TOUGH TEAM, TOUGH RINK The Blackhawks are an elite team that rarely loses at home, so this was a game the Flyers probably were going to lose even if they played better. Chicago is 3-0-1 at home so far this season after going 27-7-7 at the United Center in 2013-14. There's no shame in losing in Chicago. 14. HockeyBuzz.com - Flyers Gameday: 10/22/14 @ PIT

Concluding a three-game road trip, the Philadelphia Flyers (1-3-2) are in western Pennsylvania tonight to take on their cross-state archrivals, the Pittsburgh Penguins (3-1-0). Game time is 7:30 p.m. EDT. The game will be televised nationally on NBC Sports Network.

Page 25: Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS ...flyers.nhl.com/v2/ext/01 - Flyers NHL Clips/10-22-14.pdf · Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS

This is the first of four meetings between the teams this season, and the first of two in Pittsburgh. The clubs will rematch on January 20 in Philadelphia, April 1 in Pittsburgh and April 5 in Philly. Last season, the Flyers won each of the last four games they played against the Pens. Overall, the Flyers enjoy a 9-1-1 record at the Consol Energy Center in the regular season; 11-2-1 if the 2012 playoffs are included. After tonight's game, the Flyers return home. They will take on the Detroit Red Wings at the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday night. On Tuesday, the defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings come to town. Flyers outlook Any hopes that the Flyers would carry over momentum from Saturday's 6-5 comeback win in Dallas were quickly dashed last night in Chicago. The powerhouse Blackhawks ran roughshod over Philadelphia, dominating the first period to a degree that Philadelphia looked an ECHL-caliber team in comparison to the Blackhawks. The Flyers were considerably more competitive over the final 40 minutes of play, but they were already in a 3-0 hole in the scoreboard. Philly's vaunted comeback ability failed them in this game, as they made no headway in closing the deficit and went on to lose by a 4-0 count. Philadelphia's penalty killing started the season on a 9-for-10 run but has been torched twice in each of the last two games. Tonight, they will go up against a Penguins team that has clicked at a staggering (but unsustainable) 47 percent efficiency. The club's five-on-five play has been a sore spot all season. The Flyers enter tonight's game against the high-scoring Penguins having been outscored by a 17-10 margin at even strength in six games. Braydon Coburn (lower-body injury) has been practicing with the team and coach Craig Berube hoped to have the veteran defenseman back in the lineup last night. Coburn, who has been wearing a walking boot on his left foot when not on the ice, still did not feel ready to play last night. The Flyers' lineup could see some changes tonight after being shut out last night in Chicago. The club is still missing Vincent Lecavalier (left foot injury). Jason Akeson has been a healthy scratch in each of the last two games. Penguins outlook Tonight's game marks the conclusion of a three-game homestand for the Penguins. The team enters tonight's game averaging four goals per game while yielding only 10. Last Thursday, the Penguins roared out to a quick 2-0 lead over the Dallas Stars on power play goals by Sidney Crosby (an own goal that went in off the stick of Dallas defenseman Jordie Benn) and Chris Kunitz (rebound put-in of a Kris Letang shot). The Pens were unable to build on the lead, however, and entered the third period clinging to a 2-1 lead.

Page 26: Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS ...flyers.nhl.com/v2/ext/01 - Flyers NHL Clips/10-22-14.pdf · Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS

Hoals in the final three minutes of the third period by Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin lifted the Stars to a stunning 3-2 win. On Saturday, the Penguins found themselves trailing the New York Islanders by a 1-0 count at the first intermission. Closely spaced second-period power play goals by Evgeni Malkin and Patric Hörnqvist put the Penguins ahead 2-1 in the latter stages of the second period. Hörnqvist tallied an empty-net insurance goal late in the final stanza as the Pens went on to a 3-1 victory. Marc-Andre Fleury turned back 34 of 35 shots to earn the win in net. The Penguins have undergone significant changes since they last faced the Flyers. Out are longtime head coach Dan Bylsma, general manager Ray Shero, controversial but high-scoring winger James Neal and top-pairing defenseman Matt Niskanen. In are new head coach Mike Johnston, general manager Jim Rutherford and new players such as former Predators forward Hörnqvist (who has racked up four goals and four assists in his first six games as a Penguin) and defenseman Christian Ehrhoff (one assist, plus-two). The club also added two-stint former Flyers winger Steve Downie (zero points, minus-one, 15 penalty minutes). On the injury front, forward Beau Bennett is on IR with a lower-body injury. Pascal Dupuis got hit by a puck in the head/neck area in Thursday's game and had to be stretchered off the ice. Fortunately, the player escaped serious injury and he was right back in the lineup on Saturday. After tonight's game, the Penguins are right back in action tomorrow night. The Pens will head to the Motor City to take on the Detroit Red Wings. The 2013-14 Hart Trophy winner is averaging over two points per game with nine points (4g-5a) through the team’s first four games… Three of his four goals, and six of his nine points have come on the power play… He is the first Penguin to post three or more points in each of their first two games since Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr and Ron Francis did it in 1995-96… Crosby recorded his 500th career assist in his last game, becoming sixth fastest player in NHL history to reach 500 assists (554 games)… Against the Flyers, Crosby averages 1.56 points per game in his career, posting 75 points (30g-45a) in 48 games… Last season he recorded four points (2g-2a) in five games. 16. Welcome to the rivalry, Mike Johnston. Are you ready for your first taste of Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Philadelphia Flyers hockey?

Page 29: Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS ...flyers.nhl.com/v2/ext/01 - Flyers NHL Clips/10-22-14.pdf · Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS

"I'm excited," Johnston, Pittsburgh's first-year coach, told the Penguins website Tuesday in advance of the NBCSN Wednesday Night Rivalry game against the Flyers at Consol Energy Center (8 p.m. ET). Johnston has coached in some bitter rivalries before. For example, in the Western Hockey League, where he was coach and general manager of the Portland Winterhawks for the previous six seasons, games against the Seattle Thunderbirds were circled on the schedule. Johnston's history in the NHL includes stops as an assistant coach with the Vancouver Canucks (1999-06) and Los Angeles Kings (2006-08). He said Flyers-Penguins is one that jumps off the schedule page at him. "When you look at an 82-game schedule some games just blend into the other games and some games jump right out at you," Johnston said. "Heading into the season and looking at games last year when Philly and Pittsburgh played, the intensity and emotion, both in the building and on the ice, I think it adds to the game." The Flyers were 3-0 against the Penguins in Pittsburgh last season. They won four out of the five games in the season series. The game Wednesday is the first of five between the rivals this season. Here are five things to watch in this week's Wednesday Night Rivalry game, the Pennsylvania edition: 1. Pittsburgh's speed -- If it was a secret, which it wasn't, it's out now. The Penguins are going to win under Johnston by using their speed and skill. They are going to win with cleaner zone entries based off of their speed and skill. They are going to win with shorter, crisper and quicker passes. They're going to let the puck complement their speed game, not ruin it. How the Flyers react to that will be telling. How the Flyers react will determine if they are playing on their heels or their toes. The Penguins will try to put them on their heels early by using their speed against the slower Philadelphia defense. It has a good chance of working considering the Flyers will be coming into Pittsburgh fresh off a 4-0 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks at United Center on Tuesday. The Penguins are healthy and fresh considering they haven't played since Saturday. 2. Flyers discipline -- Philadelphia was the least-penalized team in the Eastern Conference until discipline became a problem Tuesday. The worst part is the Flyers' four minor penalties, all leading to Chicago power plays, were unnecessary and avoidable.

Page 30: Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS ...flyers.nhl.com/v2/ext/01 - Flyers NHL Clips/10-22-14.pdf · Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS

Michael Raffl committed two minors in the offensive zone, kneeing on Blackhawks defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson and roughing on forward Daniel Carcillo. Zac Rinaldo had a roughing penalty on Carcillo. Blair Jones was called for charging Ben Smith. The penalties seemed to be made more out of frustration than anything else. They were ill-timed too; Raffl's kneeing on Hjalmarsson came 17 seconds after Bryan Bickell gave Chicago a 2-0 lead, and his roughing came in the final three minutes of the second period. Patrick Kane scored his first power-play goal 15 seconds into Raffl's first minor. Kane scored his second power-play goal with Jones in the box in the third period. The Flyers have to be more careful about maintaining their discipline against the Penguins, who are 8-for-17 on the power play this season. 3. Penguins looking to build on PK success, special teams in general -- Pittsburgh's penalty kill started out woefully bad, but it has gotten better with each game. The Penguins gave up three power-play goals in a 6-4 win against the Anaheim Ducks in their season opener. They followed that up by yielding two power play goals in a 5-2 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Their PK abandoned them against the Dallas Stars; Tyler Seguin scored a power-play goal with a one-timer off a cross-circle pass with three seconds remaining to give Dallas a 3-2 come-from-behind win. However, Pittsburgh beat the Islanders 3-1 last Saturday in large part because of its strong PK. The Penguins were 7-for-7. They killed off a 5-on-3 for 1:26 in the second period. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh's power play has been spectacular with eight goals. The Penguins have at least one power-play goal in each of their four games, including at least two in three of them. However, the Penguins were 9-for-15 on the penalty kill and 1-for-21 on the power play against the Flyers last season. 4. Philadelphia on a back to back, lineup changes -- The Flyers are 0-1 in the second half of a back-to-back this season, losing 6-4 to the New Jersey Devils on Oct. 9 after a 2-1 season-opening loss to the Boston Bruins on Oct. 8. Under Berube last season they were 9-3-1 in the second half of back-to-backs, including 6-3-0 on the road. They won two of those games against the Penguins in Pittsburgh. It's likely that Ray Emery gets the start Wednesday after Steve Mason started Tuesday. Emery has allowed four goals on 43 shots in two appearances (one start) this season. He

Page 31: Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS ...flyers.nhl.com/v2/ext/01 - Flyers NHL Clips/10-22-14.pdf · Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS

was 2-0 with a .933 save percentage in two appearances (one start) against Pittsburgh last season. Flyers defenseman Braydon Coburn could play for the first time since sustaining a foot injury in the season opener at Boston. He was close to playing Tuesday and even skated in warmups, but did not play. If he plays Wednesday it's possible Berube dresses seven defensemen. 5. Pittsburgh still seeking production from depth players -- If there is a criticism of the Penguins through four games it's the fact that they aren't getting any production from their bottom-six group of forwards and their second and third defense pairs. Pittsburgh has gotten 15 goals and 27 assists for 42 points from players on its first and second lines and its top defense pair (Kris Letang and Olli Maatta); it has gotten one goal and two assists from the rest of the lineup. Scoring depth was an issue for the Penguins last season too. It was a big reason why general manager Jim Rutherford traded James Neal to the Nashville Predators to get Patric Hornqvist and Nick Spaling during the 2014 NHL Draft. It was a two-for-one trade that brought back a top-six forward (Hornqvist) and a bottom-six forward (Spaling). Hornqvist has four goals and eight points. Spaling has zero points, the same number as Downie, Goc, Sill and Adams. 17. YahooSports.com - Flyers-Penguins Preview

Little has gone wrong for the Pittsburgh Penguins so far this season - something that cannot be said of the rival Philadelphia Flyers. Sidney Crosby will try to continue his impressive start and help the Penguins hand the Flyers their sixth loss in seven games Wednesday night. Pittsburgh (3-1-0) has totaled 16 goals and is 8 for 17 on the power play for a league-leading 47.1 success rate. The club's penalty kill has been one of the few early blemishes, allowing opponents to go a combined 6 for 22. The Penguins improved on that in Saturday's 3-1 win over the previously unbeaten New York Islanders, killing off all seven New York chances, including a 5-on-3 in the second

Page 32: Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS ...flyers.nhl.com/v2/ext/01 - Flyers NHL Clips/10-22-14.pdf · Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS

period before Evgeni Malkin and Patric Hornqvist scored power-play goals 55 seconds apart. "They took some heat the last three games, but certainly they came through big time," coach Mike Johnston said of the penalty kill. "That was the turning point in the game, that 5-on-3 kill." Crosby has been playing especially well on special teams. The reigning Hart Trophy winner's two assists gave him nine points this season - six of them on the power play. Crosby, who has joined Mario Lemieux (1,033) and Jaromir Jagr (640) as the only Penguins to reach 500 career assists, also has nine points in his last eight meetings with Philadelphia (1-3-2), but only one in the last three. Pittsburgh is 3-10-1 in its last 14 at home versus the Flyers, including playoffs. The Penguins lost all three meetings there last season as part of a four-game overall slide. "There's always a lot of intensity, and it's a great atmosphere," Crosby said. "It's exciting to get one of those big ones here early on. "You get up for these ones a little bit more knowing both teams are at their best. It's physical. It's emotional. Both cities really get into this game, so I think everything combined, it makes for an exciting atmosphere." Hornqvist is about to get his first taste of the rivalry after spending his first six seasons with Nashville. The right wing has four goals and four assists after scoring twice and combining with Crosby on Malkin's tally against the Islanders. Hornqvist has two assists in six career meetings with Philadelphia, while Malkin's 80 points in 60 matchups - including the postseason - are his most against any opponent. The Flyers have allowed four power-play goals while splitting the first two of a three-game trip. Their biggest concern, however, should be avoiding another sluggish start as eight of the 23 non-shootout goals they've allowed have come in the first period - including six in the past three games. Those issues remained in Tuesday's 4-0 loss at Chicago, which outshot Philadelphia 19-9 in the opening period and scored three goals against Steve Mason in a span of 2:04. "We had a horrible start," defenseman Mark Streit said. "Mase was pretty much the only guy out there playing his game. It's just not acceptable having a start like that, and if you do you're going to get punished." The Flyers would benefit from Wayne Simmonds bouncing back after the right wing, who has a team-leading five goals, was held without a point in the last two games.

He has nine points in 10 career regular-season visits to Pittsburgh. 18. NBCSports.com - NHL on NBCSN: Hungry Flyers set sights on rival Penguins

Ryan Dadoun

NBCSN will continue its coverage of the 2014-15 campaign when the Pittsburgh Penguins host the Philadelphia Flyers at the Consol Energy Center at 8:00 p.m. ET tonight. In addition to NBCSN, you can also watch the game online. If their 6-5 overtime victory on Saturday gave the Philadelphia Flyers reason to hope, then Chicago’s decisive 4-0 win over them last night was a bucket of cold water. The Flyers’ season is obviously far from over just because they’ve gotten off to a 1-3-2 start, but they have to work hard to right this ship and that task won’t get any easier tonight when they battle their fierce rivals in Pittsburgh. “We got to stick together when it’s tough time and we just got to battle through it. We’ve done it before,” Claude Giroux said after the game, per the Flyers’ website. He’s right of course. The Flyers began the 2013-14 campaign with a 1-7-0 run and still managed to make the playoffs. However, the reason they slumped out of the gate last season was primarily because they couldn’t seem to click offensively. Although they were shutout last night, the Flyers’ main problem this season has been its defense. That’s not an area you can afford to be deficient in when you’re playing against Pittsburgh. For years the Penguins have been known as one of the league’s best offensive teams and nothing has changed this season. Sidney Crosby is playing as good as ever with four goals and nine points in just four games. Evgeni Malkin isn’t far behind with two goals and five assists. Even newcomer Patric Hornqvist, who never recorded more than 53 points in a single season with the Nashville Predators, has stepped up with four goals and eight points. For any other squad, Pittsburgh would be one of the worst teams to face under these circumstances, but this might actually be just what the doctor ordered for Philadelphia. The Flyers are typically capable of stepping up when facing their Pennsylvania rival. They were 4-1-0 against Pittsburgh last season.

Page 34: Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS ...flyers.nhl.com/v2/ext/01 - Flyers NHL Clips/10-22-14.pdf · Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS

Philadelphia might also finally get defenseman Braydon Coburn after he missed his fifth straight game on Tuesday despite taking part in the pregame warmups. The Flyers could certainly use any help they can get on the blueline. Regardless of the outcome, this promises to be a fun game. For forward Steve Downie, it’s his first chance to experience the rivalry from Pittsburgh’s perspective after his two stints with Philadelphia and this will also be new Penguins head coach Mike Johnston’s first contest against the Flyers. ““I’m excited,” Johnston told the Penguins’ website. “When you look at an 82-game schedule some games just blend into the other games and some games jump right out at you. Heading into the season and looking at games last year when Philly and Pittsburgh played, the intensity and emotion, both in the building and on the ice, I think it adds to the game.” Pittsburgh Penguins Articles

1. Pittsburgh Post Gazette - Penguins renew rivalry with Flyers tonight

Jenn Menendez

Steve Downie racked up his share of penalty minutes as a Flyer and agitated his fair share of Penguins over parts of three seasons in Philadelphia. Tonight, he will be able to claim both sides of one of hockey’s most intense rivalries when the Penguins play host to the Flyers at 8 p.m. at Consol Energy Center, their first meeting of the season. “I like being on this side,” Downie said with a grin Tuesday. Likewise for the Penguins, who signed Downie to a one-year, $1 million deal for this season. “You know what? When you go into those situations, you’re happy to have the guy on your team,” center Sidney Crosby said. “I think you expect him to play with that same intensity he did against you at that point. “He’s tough to play against. He makes it known when he’s out there.” The Flyers lineup in the start of general manager Ron Hextall’s era has not changed dramatically from last season.

Page 35: Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS ...flyers.nhl.com/v2/ext/01 - Flyers NHL Clips/10-22-14.pdf · Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS

Philadelphia traded Scott Hartnell to Columbus in the offseason for R.J. Umberger and is dealing with the absence of veteran defenseman Kimmo Timonen, likely out for months with blood clots. There is one area of extreme change, though. The Flyers (1-2-2) are the least-penalized team in the NHL, with just 12 minor penalties and 35 total penalty minutes, after leading the league in total penalty minutes last season. The Flyers also no longer employ a bona fide enforcer. Still, Downie doesn’t expect that to translate to a softer, more gentle opponent. “They’re a physical team and they like to intimidate other teams,” Downie said. “They like to play the body first, so we’ve got to be ready for their compete level. They’re going to come in here and work as hard as they can. We’ve got to match that.” Defenseman Paul Martin said the rivalry can sometimes produce very different kinds of games. “I think they’re always good games. They’re either really tight or wide open. Sometimes you don’t know what to expect, but they’re always tough, physical,” he said. The key, Martin said, is for the Penguins to focus on their possession game. “They’re a very similar team we’re used to seeing,” said Martin. “I think for us being able to hang onto the puck a little more and hoping they spend some more time in their zone with the way that we forecheck, to not give up as many opportunities. “I think that’ll be the biggest thing.” It will be a first crack at the rivalry for Penguins coach Mike Johnston. “I’m excited because when you look at an 82-game schedule, I always say some games just blend into the other games,” Johnston said. “Then some games jump right out at you. “Heading into the season and looking at games last year between Philly and Pittsburgh, the intensity, the emotion, both in the building and on the ice, I think it just adds to the game,” Johnston said. No one has to manufacture emotion for this game — a beautiful thing for a coach. “You don’t want to go into a game and say we’ve got to try and generate some emotion. There’s going to be lots of emotion [tonight],” said Johnston.

Page 36: Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS ...flyers.nhl.com/v2/ext/01 - Flyers NHL Clips/10-22-14.pdf · Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS

“It’s a rivalry and it’s also two teams that have had great battles. So from my perspective I’m really excited about it because as a coach you come into the game and now you know your players are going to have emotion, they’re going to have intensity and now we have to have a good game plan.” 2. Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - Rossi: Fleury is, and will remain, Penguins' soul

Rob Rossi

Some things just feel right. Take postseason baseball at PNC Park. Think of January football at Heinz Field. Look at the Penguins, wearing a yellow that only Pittsburghers could consider “gold,” playing hockey against those orange Flyers from the less-friendly side of our Commonwealth. Actually, look at the goalie guarding the home club's cage on Wednesday night. Wouldn't make sense to see somebody else between the pipes for a home game against the Flyers, right? Well, Marc-Andre Fleury isn't going anywhere anytime soon. “He's been and he will be in the future a key member of this team,” Jim Rutherford said Tuesday while taking in a Penguins practice at Consol Energy Center. “As long as I'm the general manager, Marc-Andre Fleury will be our goalie.” That is the best thing anybody associated with the Penguins has said in a long, long time. Publicly committing to Fleury is a franchise-settling move that should convince any remaining skeptics that Rutherford has a good feel for the present and future. Centers Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are the Penguins. However, an affable, charming French Canadian goalie was here first, and the Penguins are more than ever Fleury's club. Veterans told first-year coach Mike Johnston as much this past summer. They reiterated the same thing to me over the past few days. “He calms us down on the ice,” Crosby said. “For a guy who isn't really that way off the ice — like, he can't even sit still most times — you notice right away that he's calm in the net. That's how he leads for us.”

Page 37: Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS ...flyers.nhl.com/v2/ext/01 - Flyers NHL Clips/10-22-14.pdf · Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS

Teams lacking great leadership and good goaltending don't win the Stanley Cup. The Penguins won't win it again without Fleury, and they need his intangibles now more than ever. Brooks Orpik was the conscience of this team, but he is playing for the Capitals. That leaves Fleury as the longest-tenured Penguin, and if not their conscience, surely is their soul. No Penguin is funnier, friendlier or more respected, Malkin said. Fleury, who is in the final year of a contract that counts $5 million against the salary cap, will turn 30 on Nov. 28. It is not inconceivable that parameters for his next deal could be in place by that big birthday. His agent will be in Pittsburgh in a few weeks, and nobody expects a contentious negotiation on a likely long-term deal. “What Jim is expressing publicly is exactly what he's expressed privately to Marc and myself,” agent Allan Walsh said. “He expressed that to us when he had just taken over as the GM.” That was June 6, which feels like a lifetime ago, but it was only two weeks after the Penguins blew a 3-1 series lead in a second-round playoff loss to the Rangers. That defeat was tough on everybody but especially for Crosby, who believed Fleury was performing at a level similar to when the Cup came back to Pittsburgh in 2009. (Fleury's .915 save percentage last postseason was the second-best mark of his career, better than during the Cup run.) Former No. 1 overall picks and forever friends, Crosby and Fleury need one another perhaps unlike any teammates in the NHL. Without greatness from his goalie in the postseason, Crosby might never again get his hands on the Cup. Winning it just once will detract from anything he accomplishes and Crosby, while still only 27, already has accomplished more than most of the all-time greats. Without another conquering playoff from his captain, Fleury may never get the second championship he will need to cement a potential Hall-of-Fame legacy. He needs only nine wins to become the fourth goalie to notch win No. 300 in the year in which he turns 30. He is on pace to reach 400 wins by the time he turns 33, a feat accomplished only by Martin Brodeur and Patrick Roy (Fleury's boyhood idols). Given what he knows, Crosby does not doubt Fleury may crave the Cup more. They met at a Hockey Canada practice for the World Junior Championship in December 2003. Crosby was 16. Fleury was 19, the most recent first overall pick, and had already played for the Penguins. They were relative strangers, Crosby said.

Page 38: Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS ...flyers.nhl.com/v2/ext/01 - Flyers NHL Clips/10-22-14.pdf · Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS

“Well, I knew he was the first pick,” Crosby said, smiling. After that practice, Crosby shot pucks into an empty net as Fleury huddled with coaches. Crosby sauced a softie toward the cage. “All of a sudden, ‘Flower' took, like, five shuffle steps, dove and swatted it away,” Crosby said. “I was like, ‘He really doesn't like getting scored on.' ” That is especially true against the Flyers, who always will be Crosby's nemesis, just as Fleury will continue to be the soul to his heartbeat for the Penguins. “I'm happy to hear that,” Crosby said of Rutherford's commitment to keeping Fleury. “When you think of the Penguins' goalie, you think of ‘Flower.' It feels right.” Some things just do. PHANTOMS Articles

1. Allentown Morning Call - AHL Lehigh Valley Phantoms goalies have two

different styles

Gary R. Blockus

How fancy are the facemasks for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms goalies? Anthony Stolarz may be the top goalie prospect in the Philadelphia Flyers system, but he knows the reality of where he is right now. The 20-year-old from Jackson, N.J., is the No. 2 goalie for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, playing behind veteran Rob Zepp, a 33-year-old who is back playing in North America after spending the last seven seasons in Germany and the two prior seasons in Finland. "Obviously he's an older guy and he's got a lot of experience playing over in Germany and playing here a couple of years in the AHL as well," the 6-foot-6 Stolarz said after head coach Terry Murray named Zepp the starting goalie two weeks ago. "For me, it's always going to be a competition," Stolarz said. "Obviously I'm not going to just be handed the starting job. For me, it's my first year. Being eased in is never a bad thing. There's always a transition period. It's just go out there and work hard and earn as many starts as I can."

Page 39: Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS ...flyers.nhl.com/v2/ext/01 - Flyers NHL Clips/10-22-14.pdf · Philadelphia Flyers Daily Clips – October 22, 2014 FLYERS

Zepp, a 6-foot-1 native of Newmarket, Ontario, signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Flyers in July, giving him the hope that if he plays well, he may receive his first-ever NHL call-up. "You take it with a grain of salt," Zepp said of being named No. 1. "It's a nice compliment, but it's got to be earned on a day-to-day basis. It's nice to hear, but I have to go out every day and earn it, one day at a time. I had a great situation in Europe, and it was a little tough to walk away from, but ultimately it was my dream to come back here and I'm excited to do it." Zepp, his wife and two children are living near Lansdale, Montgomery County, so you might see him commuting to or from the PPL Center along Route 309 or the Northeast Extension. This season is different for the Phantoms goalies on another level as well. The two goalies actually have a goalie coach on ice for many practices. Neil Little, the former Phantoms goalie who won two Calder Cups with the team, is a scout for the parent Flyers. Jeff Reese is the goaltending coach with the Flyers, and Little is working with him to make sure the Phantoms goalies are on the same page. "It's not similar styles [for Zepp and Stolarz]," Little said, "but developmentally it's advantageous for Anthony as well as the Flyers because Rob Zepp is a veteran and he can show Anthony the ins and outs of being a pro on and off the ice, and his work ethic is exceptional. Anthony can really take something from that and be able to lean on him and ask him questions. I think they're going to be really good together." Little said Zepp's biggest attribute is his composure and the confident posture he exhibits. He likes Stolarz's attitude, conditioning, and the fact that despite being 6-6, he's extremely agile and athletic. Zepp earned the start in the first AHL regular-season game of the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in Wilkes-Barre with a 5-2 win, and followed that with a 4-3 overtime win in the first home game at PPL Center. Stolarz got the start in the second game of back-to-back games against the Adirondack Flames, the team that moved into the Phantoms' old building in Glens Falls, N.Y., and took a 4-2 loss, making 32 saves on 35 shots as Adirondack scored the game-winner with 3:28 remaining and added an empty-netter in the final minute. "Stoly did fine," Murray said of the game in Adirondack. "I thought he had some big stops. He looked very focused. Other times, there wasn't a lot of action in the second period down in his end because we played really well in the offensive zone and sometimes that's hard for a young guy because you start drifting a bit, but learning to deal with that is all a part of the process."

Zepp was the final goalie sent down by the Flyers, but both he and Stolarz took some time to make sure the Phantoms were included on their helmet art. Zepp has the Phantoms logo on one side of the helmet and the Father Time figure from the inside cover of Led Zepplin IV (ZOSO) on the other side. Stolarz, a history buff, embraced the Philadelphia-Allentown history with the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, and paid tribute to the Liberty Bell Shrine, where the Liberty Bell was hidden during the Revolutionary War. He has the Liberty Bell and Betsy Ross, as well as the Phantoms wings, on one side, the Flyers logo on the other, the initials of all his family members on the back strap and the logos of the London Knights, whom he played for in juniors and the Corpus Christi IceRays team he played for when the Flyers drafted him in the second round of the 2012 draft. Laughton lauded: Scott Laughton, the Flyers' No. 1 pick in 2012, scored a pair of goals in both games against Adirondack last weekend and earned CCM/AHL player of the week honors. "Yeah, it was a good week for me and I thought our team because we played pretty well," 20-year-old Laughton said. "Having the home opener and all the excitement from the community, I thought we did a god job on Friday, and even Saturday we were pretty close. They scored with like three minutes left. I got some good success from our success." A Phantom has scored two goals in each of the team's first three games. In the opener at Wilkes-Barre, Chris VandeVelde scored a pair of power-play goals and got called up by the Flyers last week. Laughton scored two on the power play in the home opener, and short-handed (three-on-four) and even strength at Adirondack on Saturday. "It's a good thing," Murray said of having TAG (two-a-game) players or lines. "Laughton's a very good hockey player who's got some NHL games [five in 2012-13] under his belt. He's a graduate [of junior hockey]. He's a pro. He's coming out and playing his game. He's working hard in all situations. He's got a lot of speed and some chemistry with his line." Murray admitted he'd like to get more lines chipping in and some added scoring from the defense to prevent teams from ganging up against one line, especially early in the season. The week ahead: The Phantoms face a critical weekend as they play three games in a row — or three in 21/2 as Murray likes to call it because the third game is generally a matinee or earlier start.

1. TSN.ca - Kessel's two goals lifts Maple Leafs to win over Islanders

The Canadian Press

UNIONDALE, N.Y. - According to James van Riemsdyk, his linemate Phil Kessel was this close to discarding his sticks. The New York Islanders may wish the high-scoring winger went through with it, as Kessel scored two goals to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 5-2 win Tuesday night. "That's how it goes," van Riemsdyk said. "He doesn't need room to be able to put (pucks) in." Nine Maple Leafs finished with at least one point, led by Kessel's three. James van Riemsdyk and Mike Santorelli had two points apiece. Roman Polak, van Riemsdyk and David Clarkson also scored goals for Toronto (3-3-1), which has earned points in four of its last five games. Jonathan Bernier made 32 saves. Nick Leddy and John Tavares scored for New York (4-2-0), which lost its second game in a row Jaroslav Halak allowed five goals on 23 shots before being replaced by Chad Johnson at the start of the third period. Johnson stopped all five shots he faced. "We were just easy to play against," Tavares said. "We were just soft on pucks, we stopped moving our feet, and we were just an easy team to play against." Toronto turned a 2-1 deficit at the start of the second period into 5-2 advantage by intermission, as the Leafs peppered Halak for four goals on 13 shots.

Kessel started the offensive onslaught at 9:04 of the second with his third of the season which tied the game 2-2. Polak gave Toronto its first lead of the game 2:07 after Kessel's goal with his first as a Leaf. Santorelli and Daniel Winnik set up the go-ahead goal by controlling the puck behind the goal line before Polak scored his 14th career goal in 431 games. Clarkson pushed the advantage to 4-2 with 3:39 remaining in the period with a snap shot from the high slot that Halak couldn't glove. Kessel scored his second of the period 92 seconds later causing the 11,408 in attendance to boo the Islanders off the ice. "In (the) second we got back to working," Clarkson said. "(We) took the puck in their zone and started cycling, making plays. We were better in our own zone. The difference in the game was the second. "We'll take the positives from that." As dominant as Toronto was in the second period, the Islanders were their equals in the opening 20 minutes. Leddy opened the scoring just 2:48 into the game as he walked down the slot before beating Bernier with a wrist shot. Van Riemsdyk equalized nearly six minutes later. New York defenceman Thomas Hickey lost the puck in the corner, and Kessel found van Riemsdyk alone in the slot for his third goal of the season. But the Islanders went ahead 2-1 on Tavares' power play goal at 15:02. The New York centre one-timed the rebound of Johnny Boychuk's point shot, which had ricocheted off the backboard, past Bernier. "We knew the early history of the season with their hockey club, they really come at you in the early going," Leafs coach Randy Carlyle said. "We weathered a storm. They score the first goal, we get it back. They score the second goal, we get it back. After that we kind of got things going our way in the second period NOTES: The Islanders will introduce their new owners, Jonathan Ledecky and Scott Malkin, in a press conference Wednesday afternoon at the Nassau Coliseum. Ledecky and Malkin will spend the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons as the franchise's minority owners, then transitioning into the majority owners starting in 2016-17. ... Toronto announced the hiring of Mark Hunter as the Director of Player Personnel in a statement Tuesday morning. "I am very excited about joining the Toronto Maple Leafs organization," said Hunter, who stepped down from his role as owner, Vice-President and General Manager of the Ontario Hockey League's London Knights to take the position with the Leafs. management team. I would like to thank the London Knights organization for 12 great years. I am looking forward to the start of a new chapter in Toronto." 2. TSN.ca - Desharnais' OT goal gives Canadiens comeback win over Red Wings

MONTREAL - Alex Galchenyuk is showing that he wants to establish himself as a top offensive player for the Montreal Canadiens. The gifted 20-year-old scored the tying goal with 3:09 left in regulation time and David Desharnais got the game-winner in overtime as the Canadiens downed the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 on Tuesday night. The goal was Galchenyuk's third of the season and gave him seven points in as many games for Montreal (6-1-1), which has won three home games in a row. The American-born forward had a running physical battle with Detroit defenceman Kyle Quincey for two periods before potting his goal. In his first two NHL seasons, he might have backed away from such encounters, but not any more. "I had a great summer of training," said Galchenyuk, who was picked third overall in the 2012 draft for his speed and playmaking skills. "I got stronger and I feel more confident physically. "You want to start the year feeling comfortable with yourself because like that you can do more things on the ice. Physicality is not an issue for me right now." Henrik Zetterberg, with an assist from Pavel Datsyuk, scored in the second frame for Detroit (3-1-2). Galchenyuk is thriving on Montreal's second line with veteran centre Tomas Plekanec and newcomer P.A. Parenteau. He tied the game with each team down a man when he came out from behind the net and stuffed the rubber inside the post past Jimmy Howard, who appeared to lose sight of the puck. Only 56 seconds into overtime, Desharnais poked the puck in from the side of the net after blasts from Max Pacioretty and P.K. Subban didn't get through.

Both Howard and Montreal's Carey Price shone in a tight checking game in which Montreal outshot the Red Wings 36-28. Detroit looked to be the better team for two periods, smothering the Canadiens in the neutral zone before going on attack. But Montreal had a 13-5 shot advantage in the third and it seemed only a matter of time before the equalizer would come. "Their back end really got active," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said of the Canadiens. "And Carey price plays the puck really well and that helped them a lot. "We're a quick team, but in the last 10 minutes, we were hanging on instead of pushing." Babcock was also concerned with his power play, which went 0 for 3 and is 2 for 23 on the season. "We've got to get our power play fixed," he said. It was the fifth time the Canadiens have overcome an early deficit to win this season. "We're just relentless," said Price. "That pretty much sums it up. "We don't feel we're out of any hockey game, so we just keep working and coming at you. We feel if we do that it will pay off." Datsyuk returned from a shoulder injury to play his first game of the season. He got 18:05 of ice time and one shot on goal. But he was involved in the Zetterberg goal. The three-time Selke Trophy winner picked himself up after being knocked down at centre ice and got the puck to the Swede on the right side. Zetterberg broke in, cut to the left and saw his low shot go off goalie Price, the crossbar and defenceman Subban and go into the net at 13:41 of the second frame. And the 36-year-old Datsyuk showed he still has some magic when the Red Wings had one called back 11:51 into the third. The Russian was on a two on one break when he spun in the slot and put the puck in the top corner with a backhander, but the spectacular goal was waived off because Justin Abdelkader had bumped Price in his crease. Babcock said Price initiated the contact with Abdelkader and the goal should have counted, but Price saw it differently. "Datsyuk made a great move coming into the middle and Abdelkader was just going to the front of the net," said Price. "He stopped at the top of the crease and bumped into me.

"I couldn't see anything. He turned me sideways a bit and I didn't even see Datsyuk shoot the puck. It's the referee's discretion, and I'm definitely not going to argue with him." TSN.ca - Campbell scores game winner, Bruins fend off Sharks

The Canadian Press

BOSTON - Boston's power play finally came through with two early goals Tuesday night. The other side of the Bruins' special teams unit delivered in the end. Gregory Campbell netted the game-winner with less than 10 minutes remaining and the Bruins fended off a late four-minute San Jose power play to earn a wild 5-3 win over the Sharks. "Our special teams tonight were really good for us and we really needed that against that team," said Boston coach Claude Julien. After twice squandering one-goal leads and overcoming a late deficit, the Bruins took the lead for good when Campbell tipped a pass from Daniel Paille through the legs of San Jose goaltender Antti Niemi with 9:18 left to play. But Patrice Bergeron drew a double-minor penalty with 4:09 remaining, leaving the Bruins short handed against one of the best power play units on the road this season. San Jose had converted on five of 15 chances entering the game, and added another one in the first period Tuesday. "Bergy kills enough penalties for us," Campbell said, "so it's important for us to do that for him." Goaltender Tuukka Rask and Boston staved off the Sharks' attack before David Krejci added an empty-netter with 24.5 seconds to go to seal the Bruins' third win in four games.

"It's pretty huge from our group, especially when one of your best penalty killers is in the box for the last four minutes," Julien said. "I thought our guys the last four minutes did an unbelievable job of battling through." Boston got contributions from nearly half of its roster, as nine different players recorded at least one point. Brad Marchand and Torey Krug scored power-play goals, Seth Griffith netted his first career NHL goal and Milan Lucic had three assists. Rask made 31 saves. "You've got to have everybody going because that's a deep team, a team that competes in a pretty tough conference," Campbell said. "It helps when everybody can chip in." Logan Couture had two goals and Joe Thornton scored against his former team as San Jose finished its East Coast road trip at 2-2-1. Patrick Marleau added two assists and Niemi made 28 saves. "We moved it around we just didn't get many good looks," Couture said of the final four minutes. "When we had a shot, the puck bounced on us. We didn't get pucks through and I don't even know if we got a good quality scoring chance. "The power play needed to get us one there and it let the team down." The Bruins came into the game ranked 20th in the league on the power play, converting on just three of 22 opportunities, but capitalized on their first one Tuesday when Marchand's wrist shot sailed over Niemi's glove for his first goal of the season at 13:57 of the opening period. "We talk a lot about if you can't score goals you at least want to get some momentum." Krug said. "Tonight it's nice to actually see some of those go in." With Marchand in the box minutes later for a cross check, the Sharks answered on Couture's second of the season, a deflection off a wrist shot by Marleau at 16:28. Boston made it 2-for-2 on power plays 6:54 into the second period when Krug netted his second of the season on a wrist shot only eight seconds into the man advantage. After Couture tied it off a pass from Marleau with 3:45 left in the second, the Sharks struck again 37 seconds later on Thornton's second of the season. Thornton, who played seven full seasons for Boston before being traded to San Jose early in the 2005 season, batted Joe Pavelski's shot out of midair and past Rask for a 3-2 lead. Griffith then tied it 4:50 into the third, scooping up a loose puck in front of the net and beating Niemi to his glove side.

ESPN.com - Kings support Voynov's suspension

ESPN.com Staff

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Kings are expressing support for the NHL's decision to suspend Slava Voynov after the defenseman's arrest on suspicion of domestic violence. "I don't think there's any question that we're behind what the league has done," Kings general manager Dean Lombardi told reporters. The Kings went back to practice Tuesday for the first time since Voynov was arrested early Monday morning. The two-time Stanley Cup-winning defenseman hasn't been charged, but Kings coach Darryl Sutter says the league suspension "was very appropriate." Sutter went to Voynov's house after his arrest, but the team's contact with the Russian defenseman has been limited. "Obviously we have strong feelings about it, and that's as far as we'll go," he told reporters. "That is the best way to put it, and obviously the league has made a strong stand on it." Voynov's teammates spoke carefully about his absence, uniformly expressing surprise at the circumstances. Lombardi believes the NHL can do more to educate its players about domestic violence. He says teams "have to do a better job in some of these areas." Voynov was arrested at 12:45 a.m. PT on Monday by Redondo Beach police. Voynov's bail amount was set at $50,000, which he posted, Sgt. Paul Ribitzki of the Redondo Beach PD said.

Craig Custance checks in with outside voices on the NHL's indefinite suspension of Slava Voynov, and the future of the league's policy. Story According to Redondo Beach Police Department Lieutenant Joe Hoffman, the RBPD expects to meet with the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office at some point this week regarding the investigation. Hoffman told ESPN.com when reached by telephone Tuesday afternoon that the filing status may not be determined immediately but the two sides will meet at least on a preliminary basis. Additionally, Hoffman told ESPN.com that the victim in this case was offered an emergency protective order against Voynov, but the victim declined. Because of this, there is no legal reason to prevent the victim and Voynov from living together or remaining in close contact. A child was witness to the incident, Hoffman confirmed, and investigators are taking that fact into consideration as they continue to look further investigate the case, though the child was not removed from the home. Officers responded to a house in Redondo Beach around 11:25 p.m. PT after a neighbor called police, saying a woman was screaming for "the past 20 minutes and could now be heard crying," according to a news release from the Redondo Beach Police Department. The release said officers responded and found no one in the house, but around 90 minutes later, received a call from nearby Torrance police saying a woman was being treated at Little Company of Mary Hospital for "injuries that were possibly received during a domestic violence incident." Redondo Beach officers met with the person at the hospital and arrested Voynov, who was at the hospital. 5. NHL.com - Nathan Horton's career could be in jeopardy: report

Columbus Blue Jackets right wing Nathan Horton has been diagnosed with degeneration of the entire lumbar region of his spine and his career could be in jeopardy, The Columbus Dispatch reported Tuesday. Horton has yet to play a game this season and was limited to 35 games in 2013-14. Horton did not play for the Blue Jackets in their Eastern Conference First Round series against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Reporter Aaron Portzline cited sources who said surgery has not been scheduled or ruled out but is viewed as a last resort. Horton has 202 goals and 218 assists in 626 games with the Florida Panthers, Boston Bruins and Columbus. He helped the Bruins win the Stanley Cup in 2011, scoring eight goals and nine assists in 21 playoff games. Horton, 29, signed a seven-year, $37.1 million contract in the summer of 2013. "Nathan is a frustrated kid right now," his agent, Paul Krepelka, told the newspaper. "This is normally a really easygoing guy, a happy guy, but he's just so frustrated by all of this. "He signed with Columbus to make an impact, to play a big role on a team that's on the rise. He was so excited about doing it. The fact that he hasn't been able to make any meaningful contributions is just extremely frustrating to him." The Blue Jackets also are without forwards Brandon Dubinsky (abdominal surgery) and Boone Jenner (broken hand). Each is expected to miss at least another month. Columbus (3-2-0) plays at the San Jose Sharks on Thursday.
