    FLYERS VS. BRUINS

This series marks the third and fourth of eight games between the clubs this season. Six of them are part of two-game sets, including these first four.

After this set, the clubs will next meet in Lake Tahoe on February 21.

    Thu. January 21 @ Boston 5-4 L (SO)

    Sat. January 23 @ Boston 6-1 L

Wed. February 3 vs. Boston 4-3 L (OT)

    Fri. February 5 vs. Boston

Sun. February 21 @ Boston (Lake Tahoe, NV)

    Sun. March 7 @ Boston

    Mon. April 5 vs. Boston

    Tue. April 6 vs. Boston

This will be the first season in which the Flyers and Bruins face one another eight times. The previous high was six, which took place in each of four

consecutive years from 1968-69 through 1971-72. The Flyers didn’t win a game against Boston in the last three of those seasons, going 0-4-2 in 1969-

70 and 0-6-0 in each of the next two seasons. All four years were part of a stretch where the Flyers didn’t win a regular-season game in Boston from

1968-69 through 1975-76; their only win in Boston during that time was their historic victory in Game 2 of the 1974 Stanley Cup Final on an overtime

goal by Bobby Clarke, which enabled the Flyers to win their first Stanley Cup with victories in the three games in Philadelphia.

Like Buffalo, this is the first time the Flyers and Bruins have ever competed in the same division. The Flyers were placed in the West Division with the

other five teams from the 1967 expansion until 1974, when the Flyers were placed in the Patrick Division and the Bruins in the Adams Division for an

alignment that lasted the next 20 seasons. In 1993, the Bruins shifted to the Northeast Division while Philadelphia went to the Atlantic, and that

alignment stayed in place for another 20 years until the most recent realignment placed Boston in the Atlantic Division and the Flyers in the Metropolitan.

The Flyers have gone 2-1 against the Bruins in each of the last two seasons. You have to go back to the mid-1980s to find the last time the Flyers had

an above-.500 record against Boston in two consecutive campaigns – they were 2-1 in four consecutive seasons from 1984-85 to 1987-88.

The March 10, 2020 loss to the Bruins was the final game of the 2019-20 season for both teams. That loss snapped a four-game win streak for the

Flyers against Boston, something that they had never done before. Prior to a shootout win on January 13, 2020, the Flyers had never won more than

three in a row against the Bruins.

    SEASON SERIES

Thursday, January 21, 2021 – Boston 5, Flyers 4 (SO) at TD Garden: The Flyers led 2-0 after two periods but got into a run-and-gun third period with

the Bruins and left TD Garden with a 5-4 shootout loss in the first of two games in Boston. The scoring started when Travis Konecny tipped home his

first of the year on the power play 6:17 into the second period, and James van Riemsdyk followed up with his first of two goals on the evening with 2:29

to play in the frame. Boston scored twice in 69 seconds to tie the score just over two minutes into the third; Travis Sanheim put the Flyers back on top

with a deflected goal at 7:13, only to see Nick Ritchie re-tie the game on the power play at 13:22. Brandon Carlo gave Boston its first lead less than two

minutes later, but the Flyers took advantage of their final power play opportunity when van Riemsdyk tied the game with 3:32 to play. After a scoreless

overtime, Jake Debrusk was the only shooter to prevail in the shootout. Carter Hart stopped 39 of 43 shots in regulation and OT, while Tuukka Rask

turned aside 22 of 26. Stars of the Game: 1 – Jake Debrusk; 2 – Nick Ritchie; 3 – Tuukka Rask.

    Philadelphia Flyers: Media Notes

  • Saturday, January 23, 2021 – Boston 6, Flyers 1 at TD Garden: Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron each scored twice to drive Boston’s win in the

second game of the two-game set between the clubs. Bergeron started the scoring on the power play 8:09 into the contest; Kevin Hayes was able to tie

things up just 1:14 into the second period, but the Bruins scored the next five goals. Carter Hart absorbed the loss with 20 saves on 26 shots, while

Jaroslav Halak turned away 16 of 17 Flyers bids. Stars of the Game: 1 – Brad Marchand; 2 – Patrice Bergeron; 3 – Charlie Coyle.

    LAST GAME

Wednesday, February 3, 2021 – Boston 4, Flyers 3 (OT) at Wells Fargo Center: The Bruins tied the game with 14.9 seconds left in regulation and

then got the game winner 31 seconds into overtime, both on the power play, to take a 4-3 win in the first of two games between the clubs this week. The

Bruins scored just 12 seconds into the game on the first of three goals from Patrice Bergeron; from there, the Flyers were able to open a 3-1 advantage

on goals by Kevin Hayes with 4:31 left in the second, Jake Voracek 1:03 into the third and Joel Farabee at the 8:41 mark of the final frame. But three

power play goals turned the tide back towards Boston – Pastrnak got the first two, at 12:05 of the third and then the tying goal in the final minute, and

Patrice Bergeron picked up the OT winner. Carter Hart made 31 saves in absorbing the loss, while Tuukka Rask earned the win with 22 stops. Stars of

the Game: 1 – Patrice Bergeron; 2 – David Pastrnak; 3 – James van Riemsdyk.

    NOTES OF THE NIGHT

James van Riemsdyk has five goals and 10 assists for 15 points through the first 11 games. He recorded his first career four-assist game and his

second career four-point game on Jan. 31 vs. NYI. van Riemsdyk comes into tonight’s game on a five-game scoring streak (2-7-9) with those seven

assists coming over the last four games.

  • Ivan Provorov is averaging 26:06 of ice time per game this season, which ranks fourth in the NHL. He has two goals and four assists for six points, and

has picked up three of those assists on the power play.

Flyers captain Claude Giroux played his 900th career NHL game on Wednesday, becoming only the third Flyer in franchise history to appear in 900

games for the club along with Bill Barber (903) and Bob Clarke (1,144). Next week, Giroux is scheduled to pass Barber for second place in games

played. Giroux played his 611th game as Flyers captain last Tuesday, moving him past Clarke for the most games in the role in franchise history.

The Flyers have sprinted to their 7-2-2 record despite being outshot in 10 of their 11 games so far this season. They have the largest negative shot

differential in the league; they are averaging the fewest shots per game in the NHL at 23.7, while allowing the third-most per game at 33.8. Despite this,

their 38 goals are seventh-most in the league and their 34 allowed gives them a plus-4 goal differential.
