It’s no surprise that my Orange Passion is Women for OSU. It’s been a privilege to serve as Chairwoman alongside such incredibly talented Council members as we strive to inspire women to find their orange passion and celebrate the significant impact of women’s influence, leadership and giving to OSU.

Reflecting back over the past several years, Women for OSU has achieved impressive success. During our 2014 Council retreat, we evaluated and revitalized the organization’s mission, programs and focus and adopted new strategic goals for our Awards, Events, Fundraising and Marketing Teams to support the Council’s priorities. Women for OSU also established term limits for Council members, infusing a variety of new ideas, enthusiasm and diversity into the group.

Our scholarships have consistently increased in value and number with 39 students receiving $144,350 to date. Through the generous support of Symposium sponsors and partners, we’re on track to reach our $1 million goal for the Women for OSU Endowed Scholarship Fund by the Council’s 10-year anniversary in 2019.

The Council is also implementing a new Mentorship Team with Jan Cloyde as Team Chair. Working in collaboration with Dr. Pam Fry, OSU’s Associate Provost and Associate Vice President for Undergraduate Education, and Dr. John Mark Day, Director of Leadership and Campus Life for OSU, an academic course is being developed that utilizes student philanthropy as a teaching strategy to enhance students’ development as individuals, scholars and professionals. Women for OSU members will serve as mentors to student philanthropists in developing leadership skills and implementing philanthropic projects.

It’s incredibly heartwarming and rewarding to be a part of impacting the lives of OSU students. Helping empower the next generation of philanthropists to pursue their orange passion is one of the most enjoyable aspects of my involvement with Women for OSU. The friendships gained throughout this journey with Council members, Foundation staff and the OSU family are special blessings as well.

Women for OSU’s outlook is vibrant, and I have great confidence in our new officers. Chair Amy Mitchell and Vice Chair Robin Byford are experienced leaders who will do an excellent job advancing new opportunities for Women for OSU to engage and inspire others to positively impact the future of OSU.

Former First Lady Laura Bush was the keynote speaker at this year’s event on April 14. Bush’s speech included stories from before, during and after living in the White House. She also spoke about her philanthropic efforts, which focus on education, health care and human rights.

Becky Steen, an OSU alumnus and chair of Women for OSU, provided an update on the organization, including some impressive statistics. The group has awarded $144,350 in scholarships to 39 students during its eight-year history. It has hosted more than 2,500 women at its various events. The 48 current members of the organization’s Council have given more than $123.3 million to countless areas at OSU. The combined giving of everyone who attended the Symposium exceeds $1.38 billion to support OSU.

Gov. Mary Fallin also spoke, providing an update on the state and highlighting her pride in being a Cowgirl. Ann Hargis, OSU’s First Cowgirl, brought greetings from the university.

Roxanne Pollard, chair of the Women for OSU Awards and Recognition Team, introduced Philanthropist of the Year Malinda Berry Fischer as well as the nine scholarship recipients.

“We received a total of 200 scholarship applicants this year, more than four times our previous record,” Pollard said. “Their stories are uplifting and inspiring. Choosing the winners from such a stellar pool is challenging, but these eight young ladies and one young man are extremely deserving.”

The master of ceremonies was alumnus Jocelyn Lockwood, a reporter at NBC 5 in Dallas, Texas.

eneath a canopy of twinkling lights in Gallagher-Iba Arena, Malinda Berry Fischer fondly recalled her

deep-seated Oklahoma State roots in April while being recognized as the Women for OSU Philanthropist of the Year. As a child – the granddaughter of OSU’s second female graduate – she and her family would watch Coach Henry Iba and his team take on worthy opponents. In addition to being the backdrop to cherished memories, attending OSU provided valuable life lessons.

Fischer grew up in Stillwater, the same town where her namesake grandmother, Malinda Blanche Wise Diggs, had become the second woman to graduate from then-Oklahoma A&M College back in 1898. Fischer followed in her footsteps, earning a 1960 education degree from OSU. She also graduated from the Harvard-Radcliffe Program in Business Administration in 1962.

“For all of us who attended OSU, we are encouraged not to be afraid to explore new places and new ideas, and to be ever inquisitive, to seize opportunities with confidence that you can do it, to push and prepare yourself to embrace challenges,” said Fischer. “As my father often told my brother and me, always do your lesson. Sometimes it ’s a very lonely journey.

“Receiving this honor did make me reflect on my life a little bit and like all of us, when we believe something strongly enough, we will find a way to do what we can and to give what we can.”

That mentality might explain a bit more of Fischers’ dedication to the communities where she’s lived and her evident passion for the arts in Stillwater, among many things.

teaching excellence in the arts. She is also a life member of the OSU Alumni Association. She is currently chair of the OSU Art Advisory Council and serves on the Performing Arts Advisory Board and the Doel Reed Center for the Arts committee.

Among her numerous other philanthropic efforts are serving on the boards of the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation and the Communities Foundation of Oklahoma.

She was recognized as an OSU Leadership Legacy in 2002 and a Distinguished Alumna in 2006. In 2012, she was inducted in the OSU Alumni Hall of Fame.

Fischer and her husband live in Stillwater. They have two sons — Richard (Angie) and Van (Darlene) — and three grandchildren — Bretton, Jackson and Campbell.

She and her husband, Dick, made a home in Rochester, N.Y., from 1963 to 1995. She served on numerous boards including as chairman of the trust committee and on the executive committee for Chase Manhattan Bank/Rochester Division and chairman of the Rochester Area Community Foundation. She also worked as a consultant specializing in organizational management and development. In 1965, she was named one of the “Outstanding Young Women of America.” She returned to Stillwater in 1995 to head the family-owned Thomas N. Berry & Company. She recently retired from that position as well as president of Marietta Royalty Company.

She served on the OSU Foundation Board of Trustees from 1997-2007, including time as interim president and CEO (2004) and chairman of the board (2005). She also served on the Women for OSU Council from 2009-2011.

Fischer has given back to her alma mater in many other ways as well. She established the Thomas E. Berry Professorship in Water Research and Management and the Wise-Diggs-Berry Endowed Arts Faculty Award for

Taylor Brown, a hotel and restaurant administration sophomore from Oklahoma City, is president of the OSU Chapter of the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality, fundraising chair for the OSU Chapter of the American Hotel & Lodging Association, and fundraising committee chair for Mr. and Miss Black OSU. She has volunteered for Infant Crisis and Wings of Hope. She is also a member of the OSU Minority Women’s Association and the OSU African-American Student Association.

She defined philanthropy as “giving back to others inside and outside of your community. I believe that if you are blessed with the opportunity to give as much as you have received, then there should not be any hesitation. A philanthropic act does not have to be monetary; it can also include offering intangible things such as your time and ideas.”

Austyn Iven is a sports media junior from Stillwater. She divides her philanthropic service among many different areas, with many tied to her position as a sports media major and sports reporter, as well as former Cowgirl basketball player. Her resume’s section on volunteerism is filled with organizations such as Coaches vs. Cancer, OSU POSSE Auction, Remember the Ten Run and the OSU Women’s Basketball Golf Tournament. She is also a current or past member of the Athletic Council, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, the Association for Women in Sports Media, the Sports Media Club and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Her contributions are not limited to athletics, however. She is or has been an executive member of the Student Alumni Board, Dance Marathon and National Women’s Fraternity. She has also volunteered for the Humane Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Bedlam Blood Drive, among many others.

Jacquelyn Lane, a chemical engineering junior from Beulah, Colorado, has completed more than 200 service hours each of the three years she has been in college. She organized the official Stillwater Strong t-shirt campaign that raised $82,000 to support those injured in the tragedy at the 2015 Sea of Orange parade. She traveled halfway across the world to spend part of a summer as an Ubuntu Youth tutor in Durban, South Africa. Jacquelyn is also a tutor for the OSU Athletic Department and Senate Vice Chair for the Student Government Association. She is also Philanthropy Committee Chair for the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology’s Student Council.

She defined philanthropy as “recognizing a need, finding a viable solution and actively working toward a meaningful goal. Philanthropy is unifying people and their various talents and resources toward a common cause. Philanthropy is so admirable because it asks for nothing in return.”

Savannah Martin, a microbiology freshman from Duncan, has a heart for helping the deaf and hearing disabled stemming from her own diagnosis with a bilateral moderate to severe sloping loss in kindergarten. She worked with her teachers throughout her time in elementary, middle and high school to develop practices for helping students like her. Beginning as a senior in high school, she has written and implemented curriculum in various school districts to educate teachers about accommodating hearing impairment in the classroom.

She also speaks at teacher workshops, civic clubs and other places to teach people how to empathize with and accommodate hearing-impaired students. Savannah is the philanthropy chair for Pi Beta Phi and a former junior counselor at Oklahoma Girls State. She also participated in the International Affair Seminar, based in Washington D.C. and New York, which raised awareness about human trafficking.

Sarah Sauer, a nutritional sciences and pre-dental science senior from Highland Village, Texas, volunteers in many areas, including devoting more than 200 hours leading freshmen at Camp Cowboy and another 100 hours coaching YMCA soccer. She is also a tutor at the OSU LASSO Center. She is or has been a leader on the Homecoming Steering Committee as well as the Internal Affairs Committee and Cowboy Cousins with the Student Government Association.

“Philanthropy is looking outward, rather than inward,” Sauer said. “It is giving time, energy or one’s resources to benefit others. Philanthropy in Greek means ‘love of humanity,’ and being philanthropic ultimately means giving of oneself for the public good. By helping others, we help ourselves, whether through the betterment of our community or the contentment of having contributed to a greater good.”

Ricki Schroeder is an agribusiness and agricultural leadership senior from Kremlin. He is very active in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Sciences. He has served as president and homecoming chair of OSU Collegiate 4-H, as well as a previous State Leadership Council President of Oklahoma 4-H. He has also served as a Career Liaison and Freshmen in Transition Student Academic Mentor through CASNR’s Student Success Leaders.

Schroeder served on the public relations committee for OSU Dance Marathon, which raised more than $130,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network, as well as on the executive committee of the Agricultural Leadership Department Hunt for Hunger Food Drive. He said, “to show your love of mankind—whether it be through a charitable donation, volunteering your time, or performing a simple act of kindness—can be considered philanthropy. While at OSU I have tried to live by this definition everyday so I could make a difference.”

Audrey Woods is a master’s student in mental health counseling from Dallas, Texas. She is a Sexual Violence Prevention Educator at OSU, participating in related programs such as 1 is 2 Many, Sexual Violence Prevention Program Overview at both the Stillwater and Oklahoma City campuses, and the 1 in 4 Women’s Program. She is an advocate for the Sexual Assault Response Advocate Team. Audrey is also co-leading a research project investigating students’ perception and desire for sexual violence education and prevention.

In addition, she has volunteered through Wings of Hope Family Crisis Services, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and as the Survivorship Committee Chair for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. She succinctly defines philanthropy as, “to open your eyes to the need, to open your heart to the hurt, and to do something about it.”

Emma Murray was honored as the Sheryl Benbrook Women for OSU Student Scholar. Murray is a creative writing/poetry master’s student from Council Bluffs, Iowa. The majority of her philanthropy is related to literacy. She is the literacy sponsor of Oklahoma WONDERtorium and Wings of Hope Family Crisis Services. She is also facilitator of the “Read, Write & RePeat Writing Club” at the Stillwater Public Library. In addition, Murray spent six weeks helping three fifth-graders at Highland Park Elementary prepare for the reading and writing portion of the Oklahoma Core Curriculum Test. She is secretary of the English Graduate Student Association, treasurer of the Creative Writers Association, and assistant editor of Cimarron Review.

Murray believes in literacy-related philanthropy because, “literacy is not only an essential skill for a thriving community—as all forms of communication depend upon an individual’s literacy skills—but it is also a powerful skill that can serve as a catalyst for change.”

Alexandria Mullins, a clinical psychology doctoral candidate, was presented the Wirt June Newman Memorial Scholarship, which salutes public or government service. She is from Haworth, Oklahoma, and her goal is to become a pediatric psychologist working with families of children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses. She is passionate about advocating for families in rural or low-income areas. She wants to create and test evidence-based psychosocial interventions, disseminate those resources and interventions to health care practitioners in rural or low-income areas, and advocate for governmental policies to improve health care accessibility for families.

She was the OSU Psychology Department Senior of the Year in 2014, when she completed her first degree at OSU, and is a 2015 Remember the Ten Run scholarship recipient. Alli is vice president of the Psychology Graduate Student Association. She developed and co-coordinated a Stillwater Strong fundraiser to support victims of the tragedy at the Sea of Orange Parade, and is a member of the Cavett Kids Foundation Advocacy Board, which serves children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses. She is also an in-house practicum student for the Psychological Service Center.

What is your orange passion?

My orange passion is providing students all kinds of opportunities to expand their worlds, from meeting different people to leadership training to learning about philanthropy to meeting and getting to know those from other countries and other parts of the country.

Why do you support Women for OSU?

I believe in providing scholarships that might make the difference in the education of students. I’m also very excited to lead our new Mentoring Team, which will help students learn about philanthropy.

What stands out as your most meaningful philanthropic contribution?

My favorite is a story that shows everyone can do something. I’ve tried to do what I could and given money many times over the years, but my favorite story was when I was president of Big Sisters of Los Angeles. We had a Vietnamese young woman, whose family had escaped as boat people and found their way to America, who was taking advanced classes and being mentored by her big sister who kept in close touch with the school counselor. She was a brilliant young lady. Between her junior and senior years of high school she won a scholarship to go to a summer program at a school on the East Coast. She originally said she was going to have to turn it down because her family needed the income from her summer job, and the scholarship didn’t include airfare. I heard about that and I said, “Airfare is not going to keep this kid from going!” So I called American Airlines and they comped her ticket. She participated in the program and later wrote me this personal note thanking me, and it made my entire family cry. She said no one had ever done something so special for her. It was such a small thing that I was just tickled to do, and it made such an impact on her. And today she is a successful entrepreneur and lawyer.

What is your orange passion? I go out of my way to promote a cause that I love – the force of higher education and the excellence with which OSU does that. I will direct potential students to OSU, mentor students in internships and recent graduates in their careers. I contribute to the College of Human Sciences Expansion Fund and the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology undergraduate scholarships. What are you doing now?

I’m an engineer in Product Development at Boeing Commercial Airplanes in Seattle. I work with technologies that improve environmental performance of our airplanes by reducing noise and emissions. What are your thoughts about Women for OSU?

I’d like to give a huge thank you to all the donors to the OSU Foundation and Women for OSU. The financial support and recognition as an impactful engineer by Women for OSU emboldened me to pursue more challenges and inspire others.

Now that some years have passed, what did the Women for OSU scholarship mean to you?

Most impactful for me was the Women for OSU reception. It was my first truly fancy business dinner and networking event and it was intimidating! It helped to prepare me for other situations like that.

What stands out as your most meaningful philanthropic contribution?

I’m most proud about the scholarship I founded in memory of my friend Kyle Bruggemeyer, and his family. Each year, this scholarship goes to a student passionate about aerospace and aeronautics, just like Kyle. We’ll never get Kyle back, but his legacy will live on at OSU and in the skies above.

What is your orange passion?

Scholarship efforts. With the way finances are going, I don’t see how kids go to college these days. If it weren’t for scholarships and people sharing what they have to share, I think we would be in a world of hurt. I am very active in the Cleveland/McClain Counties Chapter of the OSU Alumni Association, and we are all very dedicated to raising money for scholarships and recruiting students who will go to school and get degrees and utilize their potential. What are your thoughts about Women for OSU?

I think it’s a wonderful organization. I love that it showcases the scholarship winners, including what they’re doing and what they want to do. It highlights outstanding young women who I think might not get recognized enough otherwise.

Why did you decide to become a Partner and support the program?

I knew some people that were involved. I kind of like social events. I’m one of those kind. They had nice social events and very interesting speakers. I am so looking forward to Joan Lunden at next year’s Symposium. She’s one of my favorites. Where and when did you first learn about philanthropy?

Back in junior high and high school we had to raise money for things all the time. We did bake sales and we just gave things to people. My parents were generous to a fault. If anyone showed up and we were having supper, we threw another plate on the table no matter how much we had. I was taught that when you went to Sunday School, you always put some money in the offering plate and you never made change.

Is there anything else you would like to say?

I really love OSU. In my opinion, if you attend OSU and you think you aren’t at home and nobody cares about you, you may need to go to University Counseling Services and seek professional help. It’s that kind of place.
