A first in Doylestown Health’s history, One Vision: The Campaign for Doylestown Health signals a new era of philanthropy and sets the stage for a second century of healthcare excellence. With a goal of $75 million, “our comprehensive campaign will support bold plans to transform healthcare delivery across our system, ensuring that Doylestown Health has the resources to remain an independent, innovative and patient-centered organization,” says Jim Brexler, President and CEO. “This is an incredibly exciting time to be a part of Doylestown Health.”

A series of capital improvements across Doylestown Health began with the groundbreaking for the new Center for Heart and Vascular Care (slated for completion in 2019). The main section (Phase One) of the Community Center at Pine Run opened in August, creating a new focal point and “Hub” for activities and dining on campus. Campaign priorities also include surgical suite renovations and expansion, construction of an outpatient pavilion, and a new main entrance at Doylestown Hospital. These signature projects will be completed by 2023, when Doylestown Health celebrates our 100th Anniversary.

“Embarking on a campaign of this magnitude is a significant milestone for Doylestown Health. With this campaign, we continue to build on a remarkable tradition of philanthropic and volunteer support that began with our founders, the Village Improvement Association of Doylestown (VIA),” notes Laura Wortman, Vice President and Chief Development Officer.

Prior to the One Vision campaign public launch on June 1, 2018 (see page 22), a campaign “quiet phase” allowed for campaign volunteer leadership to engage at the earliest stages of campaign planning. During this time, “we also secured commitments from members of our boards of trustees, our senior leadership, medical staff and associates,” says Wortman. “Our own participation is a key factor in recruiting a campaign committee that can advocate for our priority initiatives and engage the greater community.”

We feel fortunate to have such high-quality healthcare in our community and, for nearly 100 years, Doylestown Health has embraced its responsibility to deliver exceptional healthcare in every aspect. Four generations of our family have relied on the lifesaving, compassionate care delivered by highly skilled physicians and nurses across specialties at Doylestown Health. Their team of experts and family of care have been by our side, seeing us through situations from the rare to the routine—making the very best decisions with our needs as patients placed first.

That’s why One Vision: The Campaign for Doylestown Health is so important to us personally. We are honored to serve as chairs of this unprecedented campaign to secure the future of this amazing, independent healthcare resource in our community for generations to come. We need to keep challenging ourselves to improve standards and reach for the next level.

In order to be successful, we rely on our partnerships with the community. Doylestown Health has always answered the call for us, now we firmly believe that our community should answer the call to support these ambitious plans for our second century and beyond.

It’s not often that we have an opportunity to truly build a legacy for future generations of our own families and neighbors. Together, we will secure an enduring legacy of care and our vision—One Vision—for the future of Doylestown Health.

We invite you to join us.

“Doylestown Health is truly fortunate. When we invited Dick and Angela Clark to serve as chairs for our campaign, they answered the call enthusiastically and without hesitation,” notes Brexler. The Clarks joined Honorary Chairs Alex and Pat Gorsky to bring the One Vision campaign to life. “That these esteemed healthcare leaders chose to work closely with us, out of the many organizations that seek their support, speaks volumes,” says Joan Parlee, Chair of the Doylestown Hospital and Doylestown Health Foundation Boards of Trustees.

In addition to serving in lead campaign roles, the Clarks and Gorskys each made transformational gifts of $5 million, representing the largest single gifts in Doylestown Health’s history and another milestone in philanthropic giving. Both the Clarks and the Gorskys designated

their commitments to Doylestown Health’s Second Century Fund, earmarked to support the priority needs of Doylestown Health’s capital projects. Their gifts, along with early investments by other members of the campaign committee, have helped raise nearly $32 million toward the campaign goal.

Alex and Pat Gorsky’s gift was inspired by their affinity for Doylestown Health. Alex, CEO of Johnson & Johnson since 2012, was a Doylestown Hospital Board member and Pat is a current member of the Doylestown Hospital Board of Trustees and a member of the VIA. A former nurse in the hospital’s cardiac catheterization lab, Pat shared that “when Alex and I left Doylestown and our careers took us elsewhere, I was able to observe other healthcare organizations in action. Doylestown remained my point of comparison in so many

ways but always remained the gold standard for compassionate patient care. So when we were approached to be a part of this incredible campaign for Doylestown’s future, we said yes without a second thought. We are truly pleased to serve alongside an amazing group of men and women in this campaign who care just as deeply about Doylestown Health as we do,” Pat noted.

Ahead of Their Time Both the origins of Doylestown Health and modern radiology date back to 1895. That same year, two innovators launched their groundbreaking ideas. German physics professor Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen discovered the X-ray, a breakthrough innovation (for which the first Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded). Within a few months, fourteen women sat in Mrs. Richard Watson’s parlor in Doylestown to discuss a simple, yet groundbreaking concept to address community health concerns. This meeting launched the Village Improvement Association of Doylestown (VIA), founders of Doylestown Hospital. While worlds apart, both Roentgen and Watson’s visionary ideas continue to transform healthcare delivery today.

The Hands of MedicineRadiology is the “hands of medicine,” said William Corse, DO, of Doylestown Radiology Associates. “Not long ago, many conditions that are now diagnosed with medical imaging would have required exploratory surgery or a physician would have had to make an educated guess,” he continued. Now, the current tools and technology “allow us to manipulate the algorithms and data with such precision that when we perform scans of the abdomen for patients with a chronic illness like Crohn’s disease, we can determine within 2 millimeters which sections are inflamed and also distinguish acute versus chronic damage. This allows us to determine the least invasive pathway to treat the patient,” notes Dr. Corse. “With our diagnostic capabilities, our patients benefit because we can offer the most personalized and least invasive treatment options.”

Doylestown Health provides a comprehensive range of advanced imaging services and a level of expertise more often found in academic medical centers. Common types of imaging include X-rays, Computed Tomography (CT) scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission topography (PET) scans, mammography, and ultrasound.

Since he arrived at Doylestown Health twenty years ago, Dr. Corse and his colleagues have championed advancements that established Doylestown Health as a leader in medical imaging (see sidebar) in the community setting and among institutions much larger.

widely considered as one of the greatest advances of the last century, medical imaging is

essential to the accurate diagnosis and treatment of a broad range of conditions. With state-of-the-art technology,

radiologists today explore the human body with lifesaving accuracy. At Doylestown Health, philanthropic gifts support

the acquisition of the latest technology and image-guided treatments, improving outcomes for patients every day.

Continuous advancement in medical imaging has established Doylestown Health’s

program as a leader in diagnostics and treatment. Doylestown Health holds distinctions

as an Accredited Facility by the American College of Radiology (ACR) in Computed

Tomography (CT), MRI and Ultrasound. The ACR also designated Doylestown Health as

a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.

Physicians and surgeons across Doylestown Health rely “heavily on diagnostic imaging,” says James McClurken, MD, Cardiothoracic Surgeon. “Dr. Corse and his entire team—from interventional radiologists to technicians—are truly passionate about our patients and achieving the best outcomes through their imaging studies,” he says. “They have significant experience and are at the forefront of the most current technologies,” he continues. “The quality of the medical imaging elevates and enhances patient care for my department and every department across Doylestown Health.”

A Multidisciplinary Approach According to Dr. McClurken, “we have a uniquely collaborative team at Doylestown Health. Our multidisciplinary cardiac conferences are essential to great outcomes for patients.” Sharing that view is Craig Kesack, MD, of Doylestown Radiology Associates, who performs CT imaging examinations as part of the planning process for Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedures. “The CT exam is the most accurate way of determining the size needed for placement of the aortic valve and is also valuable for imaging the patient’s leg artery, ensuring that the catheter can advance through the arteries and into the aorta,” says Dr. Kesack. “Through CT, we can anticipate potential complications so that the interventional cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons can plan strategies to minimize the risk of complications,” he shared.

Having the right technology in place is “another essential tool,” notes Dr. Kesack. “Our-state-of-the- art CT scanner provides us with excellent images prior to TAVR. In fact, we have performed CT scans for another local healthcare institution as part of their program, because of the excellent quality of our images,” he continued.

A Closer Look The acquisition of a new stereotactic breast biopsy unit is another way Doylestown Health “demonstrates a deep commitment to women’s health,” shares Michele Kopach, MD, Director, Women’s Diagnostics Center. With the highest patient volume per square foot in the hospital, Women’s Diagnostics performs more than 24,000 mammography scans per year. “Our digital mammography capabilities

allow us to screen more patients with greater accuracy,” says Dr. Kopach. “With a 3-D mammogram (breast tomosynthesis), we use X-rays to collect multiple images of the breast to form a 3-D image. This is particularly important for women with dense breast tissue, as it is more challenging to see abnormalities. With breast tomosynthesis we can see more detail, almost like flipping through the

pages of a book rather than seeing the book as a whole,” she continues. “We are giving women accurate results faster which helps alleviate anxiety and gets treatment started sooner.”

Back to Normal One morning two years ago, Angie Whitlock could barely lift her arm over her head. The pain in her shoulder had steadily increased until it became debilitating. The pain “was impacting my daily life and making it difficult to lift my grandchildren and do my job,” she recalls. As an ultrasound technologist at Doylestown Hospital for the last fourteen years, “solving this issue was critical to getting back to performing

ultrasounds,” she shared. Working alongside Kevin Fillmore, MD, of Doylestown Radiology Associates on a daily basis, “I was keenly aware of the caliber of physician right here in Doylestown,” Angie noted. “I would not have gone anywhere else for my care. Dr. Fillmore quickly identified the issue as calcified tendinitis, which was a large calcium deposit in my rotator cuff. He used guided ultrasound to inject steroids which completely solved the problem.”

Dr. Fillmore utilizes an array of diagnostic imaging for musculoskeletal disorders, including X-ray, arthography, ultrasound, CT, MRI, and nuclear medicine. “Ultrasound imaging allows us to both make a diagnosis and treat the patient using ultrasound guided therapeutic injections for a variety of disorders, such as tendinitis, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis and others,” says Dr. Fillmore.

Angie credits her colleague with her complete recovery. “Because of Dr. Fillmore, I’m pain-free and able to continue working in this incredible department and also help other patients facing similar diagnoses,” she shared. “I am so grateful to be here.”

PARTneRs In PhIlAnThRoPyAs the retired CEO of West Pharmaceutical Services, Don Morel is keenly aware of the importance of investing in strong infrastructure and cutting-edge diagnostic technology. With a leadership gift to One Vision: The Campaign for Doylestown Health, his generous support will strengthen Doylestown Hospital’s ability to continue to offer the very latest in medical imaging technology. Doylestown Health Foundation recently spoke with Don about his philanthropic interests.

How did you first become acquainted with Doylestown Health?

A few years ago, I was an orthopedic patient and had multiple joint replacement surgeries and rehab at Doylestown Hospital. When I gauge hospital quality, I always look at nursing staff. The team involved in my care had the right level of attentiveness and took a unique approach to every patient and their needs. My wife also had a very positive patient experience as well.

What interests you about the Radiology program? Why did you choose to support it?

Great medicine begins with great diagnostics. If we can help with that on the front end, then it is a benefit to every patient, no matter what the disease. My father was a radiologist and chief of nuclear medicine in Allentown, so I learned the importance of diagnostics early on. As an engineer, I appreciate the incredible innovation taking place in medical imaging.

I was also extremely impressed with Dr. Bill Corse and his team. Their skill and expertise are on par with academic medical centers. The expertise of team members and physicians at Doylestown Health is a tribute to the way the medical staff recruits.

What do you hope is achieved through your gift?

I chose to make a gift that will support the acquisition of the next generation 1.5T MRI scanner and help outfit the facility for this new equipment and technology. This equipment will make a big impact for every patient, especially those who have trouble tolerating long studies.

Radiology supports orthopedics, women’s health, general surgery—every facet of patient care. Accurate medical imaging is one of the inputs that has an astounding impact on the quality of a patient’s outcome. Doylestown is unique for a hospital in a community setting, and the diagnostics here are proof you can get high-quality care not just at an academic medical center but close to home, too. I am fortunate to be in a position to support something that will benefit a broad range of patients in the community.

Enhancing the Essential “Every time I enter the MRI suite and see their names on the plaque I smile,” says Dr. Corse of Al and Marie Brown, who, along with others, made generous philanthropic investments that secured the acquisition of the state-of-the-art 3T MRI at Doylestown Health. “The 3T MRI has had a major impact for our patients. Because of the innovative ambient lighting and sound features, patients have more control over the testing environment. When patients feel more in control, it makes them more relaxed and less likely to move. Since motion is the enemy of a good scan,” he notes, “this has made an incredible difference.”

“We are about to see the release of a ‘third wave’ of imaging technology” shares Dr. Corse. “Because of the generosity of local philanthropists Don and Lauren Morel (see sidebar), we will be able to acquire the next generation technology as soon as it is available.” The new 1.5T MRI will be quieter, have better control for motion and increase scan speeds by 50 percent. “For patients who are extremely sick or have challenges tolerating or remaining still for scans due to dementia, for example, we can get clearer scans with a higher quality image in less time, making it a better experience for patients,” he said.

“We are deeply grateful to Don and Lauren for their investment in the One Vision campaign that will ensure our patients have access to the most innovative technology,” acknowledges Jim Brexler, President and CEO. “Gifts like these will impact every patient in this hospital and are truly extraordinary” he said.

I am grateful for investments in Doylestown Health’s Radiology program which have

allowed us to remain a leader in medical imaging diagnostics and treatment.”

emeritus honorary medical staff, doylestown hospital

The Morel Family Foundation

A heartfelt note of thanks from a surgeon acknowledges the outstanding care he

received at Doylestown Hospital and the team of colleagues who delivered it.

Praise for a job well done is always welcome and in the fast-paced environment of healthcare delivery, it can lift spirits beyond measure. “At Doylestown Health, we are always delighted to receive notes of thanks and appreciation from patients for the care we provide,” says Jim Brexler, President and CEO.

Recently, one such note of thanks arrived. Distinguishing this note from others was the author—one of Doylestown’s own surgeons. In his letter, he recounted: “As a physician, I found myself in a comfortingly familiar environment, but in a distinctly unfamiliar role as a patient. I have never before undergone major surgery, nor required hospitalization. The care that I received was outstanding and I want to acknowledge and thank all involved.”

With exceptional recall, the author lists names of Doylestown Health physicians, nurses and associates from admissions, anesthesia, surgery, post-acute and inpatient care, as well as the IV team, and recognizes “the many others working behind the scenes that contribute to the safety and comfort of hospitalized patients including the lab, housekeeping and dietary services who also deserve acknowledgement and thanks.”

To receive commendations like this from a patient, and especially a surgical colleague “is the highest honor,” says Albert Ruenes, MD, of Doylestown Health Urology. “That he chose to have his surgery here speaks volumes of his confidence in us and in me. There is a heightened sense of responsibility because this person is your colleague and friend and a part of the family,” said Dr. Ruenes. “In this instance we were treating someone who is a healer himself. A good outcome means that this individual will be restored and can continue to care for others in our community.” According to Dr. Ruenes, such a heartfelt letter is “a reminder to all of us that what we do every day matters.”

Courtney Conti, RN, was also deeply touched when she learned of this recognition. “It means the world to me and truly is an honor to be recognized by a patient, especially this particular patient because I work with him closely.” From a nurse’s perspective, “we just want everything to go perfectly when taking care of a surgeon because we want them to get the best care possible, just as they have done for their own patients,” Courtney noted.

Enclosed with the letter was a generous gift to Doylestown Health Foundation’s Honor a Caregiver program designated to the Doylestown Hospital Nursing Scholarship Fund. The fund provides tuition and scholarship support for nurses as they pursue continuing education and certification in specialized fields. For nurses like Courtney, “it is wonderful to be recognized and it is even more special that his gift was designated to the Nursing Scholarship Fund, the same fund from which I have received numerous scholarships,” she shared. “Many of our grateful patients who choose to share their experience and gratitude also make gifts recognizing their caregivers through our Honor a Caregiver program and those are especially meaningful,” explains Laura Wortman, Vice President and Chief Development Officer.

sharing their time and talent with others has kept Norm and Jean Leister active during their 63-year

marriage. Now, as residents of Doylestown Health’s Pine Run Retirement Community, their boundless spirit of generosity

and volunteerism takes shape with a philanthropic gift to support campus expansion through the One Vision campaign.

s first-graders in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Jean and Norm Leister met for the very first time. It wasn’t until years later, as recent college graduates that they met again by chance at a weekly dance held in Jean’s suburb of Brentwood. “We reconnected and the rest is history,” recalls Norm.

From there, the Leisters began their married life and welcomed the first two of their ten children in Rochester, New York as Norm pursued graduate studies in chemistry. Norm’s position as a research chemist with the Rohm & Haas Company brought the Leisters back to New Jersey, and Jean continued to hone her leadership skills as a volunteer in countless community activities.

The Leisters settled in Doylestown in 1993 where Jean was delighted to learn “that they had an active women’s club. I was amazed at the impressive history and work of the Village Improvement Association of Doylestown (VIA) and became a member. I was so happy to get involved in something worthwhile.”

Volunteering across Doylestown Hospital, Jean’s devotion to service and community is well-known and respected. “Jean’s unwavering commitment to the Heart Institute since its inception and to our patients and the families we serve is a gift we deeply treasure,” says Jim Brexler, President and CEO of Doylestown Health. “As a volunteer, Jean has spent thousands of hours engaged in service to the hospital and in support of our mission. She and Norm embody a true spirit of giving with all they do as volunteers.”

As retirement approached, the Leisters’ knowledge of Doylestown Hospital and its connection to Pine Run Retirement Community helped validate it as the first choice for retirement living. “I had a hip replacement two years ago,” Norm shares. “The care at Doylestown Hospital was excellent, from inpatient to rehabilitation. Pine Run is linked to all of these services, so our care is well-connected,” he continued. “Also, everything Pine Run has to offer by way of activities and classes are designed to be accessible and keep us healthy as long as possible. For instance, I’m playing golf and gardening.”

Just as Jean and Norm settled into their new home at Pine Run, plans were unveiled for the new Pine Run Community Center, affectionately known as the “Hub.” According to Jean, “it has been so exciting to watch the progress from week to week and now the first section of the building is open. Everyone here will benefit tremendously from the new Hub and all of the beautiful new spaces for activities and dining.”

Extending their spirit of generosity, the Leisters chose to make a philanthropic investment through the One Vision campaign that supports the initiatives most personally meaningful. “We’ve been blessed in many ways and we are fortunate that we can give back not only through volunteering but now through our gift to support Pine Run and Friends of the Heart Institute’s commitment to the Center for Heart and Vascular Care,” notes Jean.

“With the Leisters’ generous gift we will be able to help ensure the future vitality of Pine Run,” says Maria Santangelo, Executive Director of Pine Run Retirement Community. Echoing appreciation for the Leisters’ generosity, “their support of two of our campaign priorities brings us closer to making this tremendous comprehensive vision a reality,” says Laura Wortman, Vice President and Chief Development Officer.

According to Norm, “at the end of the day we are all part of this community and we are in this together. It’s not ‘they,’ it’s ‘we’. We are glad to give back. And that is truly something worthwhile.”
