Fourth ElementThis project was part of a building technology asignment that focused on design and construction intergration. Limited to a particular set of components; a concrete base, 3 envelope pieces, 2 wooden structural members and the necessary electrical connectors, the task was to create a functional lamp that exhibited a clear design intention as well as understanding of concrete at this small scale.Being interested in antiques and the natural weathering process that some materials undergo, this project was an opportunity to create a product that had an aged feel to it.

Due to the fact that the Academy is a UNESCO World Heritage site, the town believes that it is very important to ensure that the next occupants of the building have a clear understanding of this status and thus do not to jeopardize it.

Through laser scans, hand measurements and records, profiling and photogrammetry, the aim of this free lab was to introduce the students to the methods and drawing standards used to document heritage buildings in North America. The HABS standard of drawings was the template for our recordings although it was not strictly adhered to due to time constraints and the scope of learning required with in the two weeks.

Our documents will now become the basis of heritage analysis for the Lunenburg Academy in order to help facilitate a discussion surrounding the future use of the building.

Ross’ CreekAs part of a construction team hired to re-build an out-door shower project at Ross’ Creek centre for Arts in Kentville, we spent two days studying, designing and constructing wood structural details. The project started as a coastal studio but has now expanded to become one of the intergral jobs available for the Dalhousie school of Architecture Co-op program at both undergraduate and Masters levels. This particular project is still in process.

A Place to call Home

As part of our B2 studio, we designed houses situated in Lunenburg. The design intention for this particular project was to create a house that accomodated for a live-work situation. The house was meant to be site-specific and fit into the fabric of lunenburg while still being a place that an immigrant family from Africa could identify with and call home hence the importance of the light well which then drove the entire design.

The Outdoor Theatre

This was a week-long project that involved a studio team of twelve members. We designed and built a stage and back drop for an out-door flamenco performance. Because the dance primarily involves low-frequncy sounds made by the dancer’s feet movements, emphasis was placed on having the woven-MDF structures act as a piece that complimented the performance, leaving the stage as the only acoustic element.

The HingeLocated in the hydrostone at the corner of Isleville and Young st, I looked at my theatre as an opportunity to create a buffer between the residential and public spaces in the hydrostone neighbourhood. The form, program allocation and orientation of the building is such that the theatre continues to animat the street like the hydrostone market while acting as a barrier for the residential neighbours . The building exterior is made from frit glass for the atrium space and poured concrete while the interior of the audience chamber and the administration side of the building have wood finishes on the interior.Light plays a prime role in this design, being the main beacon of the theatre and the audience chamber. The louvres are oriented in order to focus evening light .
