Joy in Humility

Philippians 2:1-11

Introduction

My wife’s love language – announcing that I

am doing the dishes for all to hear.

Main point: Today we are going to look at

the Joy that humility brings as we serve the

Lord together as a church, and this passage

finishes with how Jesus modeled that for us

to the Glory of the Father.

Transition: Before we get to that, I want

you to know that the strength of a church is

unity. The Apostle knew that, and in fact,

all over the NT the Apostle speaks to Unity

and its importance to a church exalting the

gospel of Jesus Christ. First thing I want

you to see this morning…

I. The Joy of corporate unity.

Philippians 2:1-2

So if there is any encouragement in Christ,

any comfort from love, any participation in

the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2 complete my joy by being of the same

mind, having the same love, being in full

accord and of one mind. (ESV)

A. Unity is the strength of the church.

(V. 1)

(The idea of a diverse group of people using

their time/talent/treasure together for the

good of exalting Jesus Christ is powerful

and exciting.) Paul says to be unified in:

1. Love

a. Church we have to love each

other.

b. Peter says in 1 Peter 4:8, that

love covers a multitude of sin.

c. We love and forgive by

understanding the gospel – How

much we have been loved and

been forgiven.

2. Same Spirit – Holy Spirit.

Page 3: Philippians 2:1-11 Introduction… · Philippians 2:6-8 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking

a. Every believer in this room has

the Holy Spirit.

b. The Holy Spirit that raised

Jesus from the dead, lives inside

each of us.

Because we have that love and the Holy

Spirit, we exercise…

3. Tenderness and compassion

(Sympathy.

a. A kindness towards one

another that the world does not

have nor understand.

b. Unity should look and smell

kind and compassionate.

Secondly what are we…

B. Unified around: (V. 2)

1. Same Mind – the essential (Read

from WAC)

2. Same love – we love Christ and

we love each other.

3. Same Fellowship -

Membership/Discipleship.

Page 4: Philippians 2:1-11 Introduction… · Philippians 2:6-8 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking

(Committed to the discipleship

process at Coastal – Connect,

Grow, Serve)

4. Same purpose – (Vision of Coastal

– Develop authentic followers of

Jesus Christ – Through

evangelism and the local church)

Transition: This is our Unity at Coastal

Community. But for a church to have unity

we have to remember that…

II. Personal humility is the key to

corporate unity.

Philippians 2:3-5

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit,

but in humility count others more significant

than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not

only to his own interests, but also to the

interests of others. 5 Have this mind among

yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,

(ESV)

A. Not selfish.

Page 5: Philippians 2:1-11 Introduction… · Philippians 2:6-8 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking

5

1. Selfish ambition: Personal goals.

2. Selfish Conceit: Personal glory.

B. Others as significant – Verse 3

would change:

Finally, we are told to…

C. Have the mind of Christ: To think

the way Christ thought in taking on

flesh.

What was/is the mind of Christ.

Philippians 2:6-8

who, though he was in the form of God, did

not count equality with God a thing to be

grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the

form of a servant, being born in the likeness

of men. 8 And being found in human form,

he humbled himself by becoming obedient

to the point of death, even death on a cross.

(ESV)

III. Christ the model of humility.

A. Christ did not clutch. (V. 6)

Page 6: Philippians 2:1-11 Introduction… · Philippians 2:6-8 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking

6

1. He did not clutch his rights.

2. Jesus is very God of God yet did not

clutch.

3. None of this: Do you know who I

am, or do you know what I have

done.

4. Jesus did not clutch.

B. Jesus emptied himself.

1. He set aside His divine rights.

2. He set aside His glory.

3. He willingly laid Himself down.

C. Became a bondservant. (Literally a

slave)

1. Carried others burdens.

2. Burdens He had no business

carrying.

3. Your and my burdens.

4. He toiled as a slave would toil.

D. Born in the likeness of man.

Page 7: Philippians 2:1-11 Introduction… · Philippians 2:6-8 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking

1. This was the ultimate descent of

God.

2. He wraps Himself in what He

created.

Illustration: We have sterilized the entire

Christmas story. Think about the birth of

our creator.

Luke 2:12

And this will be a sign for you: you will find

a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and

lying in a manger.” (ESV)

E. Obedient to death on a cross.

1. Suffering.

2. Punishing.

3. Undeserved.

Illustration: “Only a divine being can

accept death as obedience.” Think about

that. Death is not an obedience thing for

you and me. Death is what is coming our

way.

Page 8: Philippians 2:1-11 Introduction… · Philippians 2:6-8 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking

8

It is only God Himself that can accept death

as an act of obedience.

Main Point: Humility is a choice.

1. Choice to die to yourself.

2. Choice to die to your desires.

3. Choice to live for others.

4. Choice to obey Christ.

5. Choice to obey God’s word above your

own selfish desires.

Illustration: Can you imagine a world

where everyone looked out for others as

more important than themselves….Every

moment of every day. Can you even

imagine?

1.What would your marriage look like?

2.What would your workplace look like?

3.What would your church and church

involvement look like?

4.What would your community look like?

5.What would school look like?

6.What would your relationship with your

roommate look like?

Page 9: Philippians 2:1-11 Introduction… · Philippians 2:6-8 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking

Transition/Main Point: The descent of

Christ was about humility. To have the

mind of Christ is to have the mind of

humility to the point of death. Maybe the

hardest of all, death to self.

When we die to self, we trust God to move

from…

IV. Humility to exaltation.

Philippians 2:9-11

Therefore God has highly exalted him and

bestowed on him the name that is above

every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus

every knee should bow, in heaven and on

earth and under the earth, 11 and every

tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to

the glory of God the Father. (ESV)

Of course, the main point of all this is

that…

A. Christ is the object of worship for all

for all eternity.

Page 10: Philippians 2:1-11 Introduction… · Philippians 2:6-8 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking

10

B. Secondly: Like Christ Humility is

always the pathway to God’s

exaltation.

1. This is our joy that God sees and

God rewards.

2. We humbly serve one another.

a. In church.

b. In marriage.

c. At work.

d. With our children.

1 Corinthians 15:58

Therefore, my beloved brothers, be

steadfast, immovable, always abounding in

the work of the Lord, knowing that in the

Lord your labor is not in vain. (ESV)

Hebrews 11:6

And without faith it is impossible to please

him, for whoever would draw near to God

must believe that he exists and that he

rewards those who seek him. (ESV)

Conclusion

Page 11: Philippians 2:1-11 Introduction… · Philippians 2:6-8 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking

11

Joy is found in humility. And we can

humble know knowing that God sees and

God rewards. The reason joy is not

happiness, is because Joy is delayed

gratification. When I humbly serve now.

When I humbly sacrifice now. When I die

to self now.

God has something better for me, for all

eternity.

Story of delayed gratification.

Read Philippians 2:1-11 and discuss the text together.

I. What is the theme of this passage?

MacArthur calls this passage, the story of “the descent of God the Son, the second member of the

Triune God (God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit).” To put it another way, this

passage is about the humiliation of Christ; the incarnation of Jesus. Christ humbled Himself by

adding humanity to His deity. He came and He dwelled among us. He became like us and He

served us. His service leading to His sacrificial death for our sins and then to His exaltation to

the right hand of the Father.

In this passage we see Christ as both our Savior and our example to emulate in how we love and

serve others.
