PSME MONTHLY NEWSLETTERTo all PSME BOD 2020, Head Office Team and ISO Steering Committee:

Greetings!

The ISO journey is a difficult task that no individual person can do alone. It is a challenge to our organization specially to those manning our Head office operations as a whole. I have explained the greater reason for such goal to all our Head Office Managers for appreciation, as it needs a true collaboration between all the existing departments in our Head Office, Board of Directors, and the entire PSME organization.

Our journey begins with threshing out a lot of things which are an offshoot of the many decades of PSME operation, creating more efficient and defined procedures, and more importantly ensuring management responsibilities are clear (defining of roles and inter-relationships from within the entire society). The standards being reviewed will always be journeying along with various personalities, characters, and behaviors that must be prepared to ensure a healthy ISO implementation.

I have started weeding this out on surface, defining roles, setting up a climate of genuine Servanthood. I know, because everybody will soon understand our real goals (to be certified thru recognized world class standards) that will make stronger our being a Society, everyone will set aside personal differences to move as one team. In ISO implementation, all personal matters are dealt with separately and I, with blessings from the PSME National President, will try to help on this area.

I understand that we want procedures to be perfect, but detailed perfection of the so many procedures cannot happen overnight. It is, however, a greater positive sign in an ISO implementation journey, the living challenging of standards guided by the Document Information Control (DIC) procedures that we have done. Next step is to start revising and creating other needed support procedures as long as it follows the agreed DIC process.

This ISO journey, as I could see it, will improve a lot of inter-relationship areas at the Head Office, within the PSME organization as a whole, as well as with external entities, which will eventually bear good fruits and better yields. The Quality Objectives for each department are now documented, which later could be the basis for performance assessments. Many more are going to happen for the betterment of the PSME.

Keep posted for developments and pick up learnings from the journey.

Sincerely,

ENGR. JONATHAN P. SAN JUAN PSME QMS Chairman

The month of February is very significant and exciting for in this month the “Day of Hearts” is celebrated, which they call “Valentine’s Day”. Couples, lovers and would be lovers prepare themselves comes February 14th with expressions such as giving V-Cards, V-flowers, e-Cards and e-Flowers via apps. For the author, the expression of “LOVE” goes first to the family, especially for his “one and only” who inspired him to do all things better and best for their benefits.

Having worked abroad for 32 years, there is another love that he has …and that is… “LOVE for PSME”. Since the Chartering of PSME-SA Chapter in 1991, his participation in the activities of PSME-SA started with the objective to impart services to its members. The chapter activities became his work and that of his company became the second job. Over the years, such activities increased when the coverage widened to the Middle East Region having been appointed as Deputy VP for Middle East (covering Saudi Arabia and Kuwait), VP for International Operations and VP for Foreign Affairs. Such increase in responsibilities did not derail the author’s commitment but rather challenged him to overcome the hurdles having that “PASSION” to serve.

Such was rewarded with the recognition by the PSME-National Leadership as “The Outstanding Mechanical Engineer in the Field of Community Service” in 2006 and conferment as a “PSME Fellow” in 2010 (the highest honor given to a member of the society). Outside of PSME, the author was a recipient of the 2013 “The Outstanding Mapúan – Specialized Field of Endeavor – International Community Service” awarded by NAMA and MIT and a recipient of the 2012 “Bana’ag Award” of the Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals Overseas (CFO), presented by then Pres. Benigno S. Aquino III.The “LOVE for PSME” became a “PASSION” … for even after retiring from overseas work, his services continued in his motherland, the Philippines. Prior to retirement, another LOVE was enriched ... the “Love of Profession” for the author, after having been endorsed by the Society, tried his very best to be qualified and appointed to the PRC’s Board of Mechanical Engineering, … two times - first back in 2014 and 2nd in 2017. Destiny, however, changed its course.“LOVE and PASSION TO SERVE” continues, this time directly to the members, here in the Philippines. The author (Vice President for Luzon Region), has been reaching out to the members through Chapter visitations (Clark and Romblon), Cluster events (Bicol and Calabarzon) and Regional event (7th Luzon Regional Conference upcoming in April). Such services received a positive feedback from members … it is worth serving for … it is worth dying for!

LOVE & PASSIONBy Engr. Carlito E. Alpay

KNOW YOUR BOARD2020 EDITION

PSME NATIONAL VICE PRESIDENT FOR TRAINING & EDUCATIONENGR. MARREN ERIC A.

DE LUNA

[email protected]

09178171018

Professional Mechanical Engineer

The more entrepreneurs we can create, the better

for our society.

Engr. Marren Eric Aguilar De Luna is like a breath of fresh air in the PSME National Board of Directors, considered as a rookie to handle the national affairs of the Society. As the National VP for Training and Education, he aims to level up the technical seminars being offered by the Advance Training Center (ATC) and the management seminars of the Advance Leadership and Management Academy (ALMA).

He earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree from Mapua Institute of Technology in 1994 and got his PME license in 2016. Currently, he manages and serves as the President and CEO of CRYSTAL JADE18 INTERNATONAL INDUSTRY INC. He is the Founding and Charter President of Las PIñas-Muntinlupa Chapter which now has close to 200 members since its inception in 2017. He is an active participant in chapter, regional and national events. Recently, he travelled and attended PSME events in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, giving talks about ATC and ALMA.

He shared that he was not active in PSME during the early years of his membership but circumstances led him to realize the importance of connecting with people in the same profession. He acknowledges the vital role the Society plays for each member in improving the profession as a whole.

PASSIONATE ABOUT: Empowering and motivating people. I believe that “if you are needy, you are weak.” Improve your life through continuous learning and professional education to elevate your life and career. “The moment you stop learning is the moment you stop living.” Invest in your number one asset - your mind. There is no free lunch in this world anymore. If you can buy tickets to movies and concerts, why not invest in seminars, trainings, conferences and conventions? If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.

I also have a passion for lifelong learning. I read a lot of books: technical, business, motivational and spiritual. I tell my son, “You can buy anything you want, as long as they are books or educational gadgets”. Since I was I child I read a lot of materials. Anything my hand can grasp, I will read it. I believe that in order

to become a leader, you must be a reader. There was a time that I became the number one client of PowerBooks, Alabang Town Center (ATC). Little did I know that I will chair the ATC of PSME. Through ATC, we can supplement the general membership with latest innovations and technologies in various fields of mechanical engineering such as HVAC, Fire Protection System, and many more.

LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCES: One of my life-changing experiences is my bold transition from the Employee quadrant to Business quadrant. It is my dream to become a business owner ever since I was a teenager. I believe in financial freedom rather than financial security. With financial freedom, you can have time freedom also, which you can leverage to serve more in PSME. How can you serve better the PSME members especially in the national level, if you are stuck in an 8 to 5 job? With your linear income, it will be a burden for you doing pro bono works at your own expense.

My career changing move is simple, but it was not easy. From being an employee as a Facilities Engineer in the Plant Engineering Department of TOYOTA MOTOR PHILIPPINES CORPORATION Manufacturing Plant, I worked as a Sales and Business Development Manager in a Conveyor company. I compared the linear income of being an employee versus the exponential income you can generate from being a salesperson, and proved that it is hard to become financially free if you are an employee. Besides, I had a goal then that before the I reach the age of 30, I must earn my first million, get my brand-new car and a house. Being a business owner, I got my first million and brand-new car, although not my dream car, at the age of 28. We also live now in our brand-new house, though not our dream house, at the age of 32, fully paid. I’m sharing these not to brag, but to inspire my fellow “young” mechanical engineers to dream. Dream big, start small and never give up. You don’t have to be great to start, but in order to be great, you have to start.

Be a risk taker, as the reason why employees cannot move towards being a business owner is because of

In line with the Continuing Professional Development of PSME Qatar Chapter members, a technical seminar entitled “Plumbing Design, Material Selection and Installation” was held in Wyndham Hotel, West Bay, Doha, State of Qatar on February 7, 2020.

The main objective of the seminar was to present to the participants the essential requirements for proper plumbing design, materials selection, and installation. The technical presentation was discussed by Engr. Leo Gregorio and participated by more than 100 mechanical engineers engaged in the practice of mechanical engineering services in Qatar.

HDPE pipe material selection and actual installation via Electro-fusion and Butt-fusion welding was presented by QEMS, the sponsor of the event. The members interacted in the technical discussions and in the question and answer portion of the seminar.

QATAR CHAPTER HOLDS PLUMBING DESIGN MATERIAL SELECTION AND INSTALLATION SEMINAR

FEAR. To be exact, there are two fears: FEAR OF REJECTION and FEAR OF FAILURE. It’s the fear of CRITICISM from colleagues and friends that hinder their dreams, and the fear of the UNKNOWN, the fear of failure. How can you fail if you will not try? Just do it. Dive the pool before you even think if you can swim. Do not listen to the “Dream Stealers”, but instead listen to successful people. Get a mentor. There are a lot of retired PSME members with years of wisdom behind them. Pick nuggets of wisdom from their brain and learn from them. Treat them to lunch, dinner or coffee, and you will be amazed how generous they are in sharing their life and career experiences. Learn from their mistakes, not from their success. Success is a poor teacher; failures are great teachers. Volunteer or be an apprentice, work to learn, not to earn. Life is short, we have so many things to do in life but so little time we have. Decide now to be the master of your own fate, be a designer of your own life, and make it a good one. “I am what I am today, because of the choices I made yesterday.” The choice is yours.

AS THE 2020 NATIONAL VP FOR TRAINING & EDUCATION, WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE FUTURE OF THE PSME?

I fully support the plans and programs of the current PSME National President and the rest of the Board of

Directors as embodied in Platinum 2022. I believe in our PIR Vision and I want to be there when it happens. Let’s walk together and enjoy the journey, not the destination. I wish to initiate the Entrepreneurship Program of PSME and help in improving the financial literacy of MEs. The more entrepreneurs we can create, the more jobs and opportunities for our fellow Filipinos that will result to greater impact in nation building.

Imagine if all our members are millionaires, do you think there will be chaos in PSME? “A rich man’s joke is always funny”. If all our members are wealthy, everybody will be willing to give, share, help our society. There will be love, unity, and friendship all around. With limited life span, let us not reserve our energy in just creating a harmonious environment within our society, but rather let us love and care for one another, mentor the young, and ask wisdom from the young once. Let’s help one ME at a time, let’s make ourselves significant with a purpose in life, because purpose is what creates true happiness. Be a blessing to others. Never look down on a man unless you will help him get up. Always do the right thing. Make the rest of your life the best of your life. Be grateful, as an act of gratitude is the best attitude. Lastly, my lifelong goal is to be a totally loving person.
