The promise Discover how DirectLife can strengthen your company DirectLife Every movement counts
We all know it’s true: exercise is good for us. For our physical as well as our
mental health. It’s beneficial in our private lives and at work. After all, healthy
employees contribute to a better organization. At least, that’s the theory.
But how does it really work? Most people spend their working hours firmly
planted in chairs behind their desks. With busy jobs and hectic schedules,
they don’t have time left over for a healthy workout. Or do they? Now is the
time for a solution that effectively breaks through this routine.
Philips introduces: DirectLife
The solution is here, right now. It’s called DirectLife from Philips. It’s a unique concept that is
based on psychological insight and scientific proof. We invite you to learn more.

Discover how DirectLife canstrengthen your company
Every movement counts
Given your busy schedule, you already may be moving around enough to stay healthy.
That’s the essence of DirectLife. This innovative program helps employees monitor every
move they make throughout the day. It also provides a basis for adding more activity to
their normal routine. Because every movement does count, even small changes can add up
to quick results. This can help your company become healthier and more efficient overall.
In short, DirectLife can support a new kind of culture at the workplace - one in which there
is less sitting around and more healthy activity. All of which is good for employees, as well as
for the bottom line.

‘One company, BC Hydro with about 10k employees, said they could save up to $1.2 million every year simplyby reducing the avoidable sick leave taken by their staff.’
Warburton et al CMAJ, 2006
DirectLife promises
• Substantial reduction in company health care costs
• Less absenteeism
• Increased productivity
• Fitter employees
• Proven results
• Quantifiable efficiencies
• Connection to an existing health monitoring system
• Continuous support from a live personal coach
• Increased awareness of the importance of activity
• A program designed with a scientific basis
If possible, ride your bike to work. Or park the car further away and walk.
Take the stairs. Get up for the coffee. Make time at lunch for a walk. Instead
of texting, mailing or calling, go visit your co-workers down the hall. There are
so many simple ways to add more activity to a daily routine. But what’s the
best way to make sure people actually do this? And keep doing it? After all,
for a new routine to really work there must be recognition of existing
patterns of behavior, as well as an ongoing support system for change.

Getting fitter, step by step
1. Tracking
Each employee wears the compact activity monitor all day, every day. This intelligent device
records every body movement in three dimensions. Advanced algorithms translate each
and every motion into a specific amount of calories burned. Of course, the individual’s age,
gender, height and weight are also considered. In this way, each person has a continuous
profile of his or her unique activity level.
2. Monitoring
The most recent activity data can be uploaded to a personalized web page. This clearly
shows each individual his or her activity pattern and progress. Everyone, whether they are
slightly active or very athletic, receives a personalized, achievable goal, based on the tracked
activity level. It’s all geared to the individual’s physical condition.
3. Motivating
Studies show that long-term, sustained motivation is a critical factor to success. DirectLife is
based on this principle. It motivates each individual in as many ways as possible. For example,
it sets realistic goals, yet keeps pushing the bar higher, one step at a time. And it shows results
online, and compares them with other participants. But mostly, this essential, sustained
motivation is provided by a personal coach. Someone who gives feedback and who will be
there throughout the program to provide encouragement and support. So there’s even
more reason to keep moving more and to never give up.

Structured motivation
What’s the best way to keep people motivated to increase their activity level? To address
this issue, we’ve invested many years in scientific research. Of course there are individual
differences. But, in general, we identified a number of common factors that motivate people
on a structured basis. These are:
• A clearly defined path, with a distinct start and finish
• Specific, achievable goals
• Continuous tracking of activities (every movement counts)
• Personal feedback on the results
• Ongoing support from a live, personal coach
DirectLife is the first activity program that combines all of these critical factors. It’s a total
concept that really works, based on smart technology and proven psychology. It’s sustainable
and well conceived… exactly what you’d expect from a company as innovative as Philips.
Effective behavior modification
DirectLife supports the process of changing behavior. It does so simply, gradually and
effectively… by shedding light on each person’s unique activity pattern, and then setting
achievable goals. This is the way people keep active and achieve their goals.
Lower thresholds
With DirectLife, there’s no need to become a fitness freak. It simply helps the individual
gradually build more activity into the daily routine. That makes it easier to begin – and to stay
with – the program.

DirectLife can help turn healthy activity into an important, beneficial aspect of your company’s
culture. In this way your people have every opportunity to become more energetic and
more productive. This adds up to a long-term benefit for your organization.

DirectLife trains
With DirectLife, it’s the personal coaching program that really
makes the difference. Each participant can count on regular,
personalized guidance to achieve his or her goal. The coach
tracks all progress, is always available to answer questions and,
when necessary, can even give an extra motivational push by
email. Each coach is part of an international
team of experts in the fields of psychology,
communications, health and wellness.
All of the Philips DirectLife coaches
have, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree.
Healthy employees are absent less. They are more energized, productive and
better motivated. This can lead to a more comfortable working environment
that benefits the whole organization. DirectLife clearly can help contribute to
a better atmosphere. One that will keep and attract valuable people.
More continuity
In the short term, DirectLife can boost your company’s innovative firepower and keep it one
step ahead of the competition. And by actively supporting a more healthy company culture,
you become a more attractive employer for just the right people. In the long run, you can
expect DirectLife to pay substantial dividends. You are investing in a long-term working
relationship. Your employees will stay fit, healthy and productive for a longer period of time.
This can ensure long-term productivity, even with a declining, aging workforce.
A structured policy
One thing is certain: The health of your company is much too important to be relegated
to just a project. DirectLife delivers a sustainable, fundamental health policy that yields big
results without too much effort or cost.
