_^f' ,June 1952Dear Eriends, '

Last Lord's Day, we and tLe Hergets took a long, long trail a-wind-Ing high above the beautiful North coast of the island, our destination being a little church recently established by native evangelist C.A, lifcrris . We bumped along as far as our faithful carcould safely take us, and then proceeded the last two miles on foot.Since the trail was a good one most of the v/ay, vre enjoyed the walk, stopDing occasionally to drink in the beauty of the scene below. There, against the background of the incredibly blue Caribbean, thewhite breakers dashed high against rugged cliffs or rolled in endless succession uuon white sand beaches.

The people were already singing when we reached the little thatchedbooth. They greeted us vra.rraly and eagerly, proudly telling us thatwe were the first white people ever to enter their district. Eightsouls accepted Christ that day.

The Summer term at the Jamaica Blhle Seminary will ^oon be halfover. V/e started the term with seventeen stiidents, but, nov/ havetwelve. We dismissed the others for \rarioup' reasons, for vre are trying to kee'^ the school up to as high v morol, s^niritual, and scholastic level as "nospihlo. Recently all twelve students receivedthorough nhysical examinations. Four were found to have ^malariafour have inactive Syphilis (or have .had Yaws--it's hard to tell),tv/o have hernias, others have bad teeth, athlete's foot, etc. Sowe arc doing our best to get them into better shape physicallywhile we impart unto them the Word of*Life,

Last month our Heavenly Father granted 66 baptized into Christ inJamaica.

Grod bless you for your help in this work.

Yours and His,

Woodrow and Marjorie Phillj^^s

Dear Brother McFarland,

Enclosed are the re^uepted" ruestion^W.res concerninf^ theinfluences etc. leedin^: to life-v/ork recruits. Vie did notfill in and send the financial -uestionnairo Because in our

case it would have been a little misleadinf^. V/e do receiveadequate support but not entirely in the "living-link"method. Our three children are each "living-links" ofchurches in the U.S. receiving $30.00 a month per child.Neither my wife no myself have any living link churchalthough we would desire one but did not campaign in thatmanner. Rather we used pledge cards and in that method frommany churches and individuals receive well over $100.00a piece per month toward our living. Iiov/ever we use only'.^100,00 a month a piece for living expenses and the remaindergoes into the churches and semiuary here in Jamaica. In total we and oui* children receive from the churches inAmerican an average of over .^^500.00 a month for living andwork. (Last year 1951 including hurricane gifts and onemonth's touring in the States oxir incorae was over All,000.00,but it will probably be arround $7iOOD«DO this year)

As to needs: a family in Jamaica must have ■'^^100.00 per monthper adult member and '^^0.00 for each child and you will havelittle or nothinp- I'^ft over in the way of savinp-s. Priceshave soared incrediblv in this island since the close of thewar. In general we must also supaort the school, nativeministers, a building "nrorram etc. in con.iunction with Fream*sand Hergets. We work side by side to that end with all fundsabove our immediate livings.

We all believe your work and effort^ on our behalf (all^independent missions) is a real blessing and a worth whileservice•

The Lord continues to bless \is here. In May 48 more werebaptized into Christ, (there were 113 in March and April)The Jamaica Bible Seminary will finish its second termnext month with 12 full time students and four teachers, including Bro. A.R.A. Hepburn, the native evangelist of theYork Street ch;H'ch of Christ in Kingston.

Contrary to previous reports, Bro. Edvrards was unable toloin with us in the teaching program and is not acting asDean of the JamaicaBible Seminary. If the way opens for

We were artbroken butanother place of meeting has been secured and God willstrengthen us all through this trial. A MIND TO WORK —The last visit we made to the church at Mount Pleasant Marjorie

declared to be her LAST. The road was steep and rocky, overlookingthe valley far below as it wound up the mountainside. However, lastSunday we went again, to participate in the first service in theirnew building. The people had sacrificed and worked diligently, and, except for the zinc roofing had paid for all of it themselves. Werejoiced in these people who had a"mind to work", and who actuallyhesitated to ask for our help

JAMAICA'S BLOOD BROTHERHOOD —

You know, sometimes we longfor the fellowship of Christianswho are clean, white, intelligent, and whose ways we understand. Butthen we cling to the grand thoughtof our*"Blood Brotherhood" inChrist, where all are "whiterthan snow", where there is neitherJew nor Greek, bond nor free —but all are "one man in ChristJesus'i We remember that Christ bidspie whether lovely or unlovely, wise or foolish. Therefore we areready, as was Paul the anostle, to breach the Word to these people.

JAMAICA BIBLE SEMINARY —The walls of the new seminary building are steadily going up.

This being vacation month, there will be more time for work on them.We are pleased with the progress being made, and are sure you wouldbo too. We need your constant prayers that we might build for Christand His church.

OURSELVES —

All of us are fine and although the summer heat is sometimesuncomfortable we feel good and thank God for health and strength tolabor for Christ. We are looking forward to a new member of the family in November, and hoping, too, that some church will be lookingfor a very tiny "Living Link", at about the same time. $30*00 amonth would provide complete support for our expected "Little Missionary" .

YOU —Friends, your prayer ministry for us is vital, and your partner-

in Jamaica through offerings is our lifeline for preaching Christhere. Each gift is thankfullv received. Please continue to back usup as we serve the Saviour in Jamaica.

Dear Christian Friends, October 1, 1952

THE GLORY OP GOD—V/e stood last Monday evening on the crest of that narrow

neck of land called the "Palisadoes" which encloses Kingston harbour. From our viewpoint, we could see the city of Port Royal at the harbourentrance, a century ago the fabulous pirate stronghold of Sir HenryMorgans. To our rif?ht, we could see the li/rhts of infamous Kingston asthey rapidly multinlied and sent shimmering beams across the water. Then, as the sun dinned beneath the horizon beyond the Palisadoes, wewatcned the whole landscane become crowned with glory as the MasterArtist, upon the canvas of the blue Caribbean and tho Western sky, painted a flaming tropical sxuiset# How we rejoiced in this magnificent testimony of the heavens to the glory of God I

BIBLE REVIVAL—Soon our large "Bible

Revival" banner will bo fastonedover tho door of the EllotsonRoad ch\irch building hero inKingston, for we are busy withia?eparations for an evangelisticmeeting there beginning October19th. V/o have prepared handbills, begun to instruct personalworkers, have been calling inhomes in tho district, and arepraying for a fruitful meeting.Woodrow will do the preaching,

> student-Allen Ross will load thesinging, and tho "Living for

Jesus" young people*s group will bring the special music. We lo^ "tosnatch many tender and longing hearts from the burning and send themrejocing along the Way of Life.

NIMTY-TWO BAPTIZED— ^ ^ 4We rejoice to report a record number of baptisms—92 during

the month of August. These are mostly the result of the faithfulpreaching of native preachers in the country churches.

A CHAl^INBL OF BIESSIIIG—

Friends. YOU are essential to this missionary enterprise, for only through you does God channel His provision for us hero inJamaica. We are appreciative of every gift, large and small, that youhave sent, and, with God's help,wo are endeavoring to be found faithful as stewards.

V/oodrow must still rest in bed most of the time, gradually'" getting un a little each day. He feels sometiprhtness in his chest yet at times, but otherwise feelsall right. Hov/ever, the doctor warned him thet any suddenerertlon miaht bring on another attack.' His heart has notbeen damaged, but weakened, "^ut with care can te brought backto normal within a year or two. Until then he must lim3.this activities to teachinp, preacblnp-, and llfrht work. Nomore visits to country churches, and no more laying cementblocks*. Dear Brother MacFarland:

I wanted to ha-re the latest news concerninp; V/oodrow.I wrote 70U a oonnie of weeks a^o that he had had aheart attack. At that tine, the doctor didn't feel itwas too serious since there seemed to T)e no in.lury tohis heart, A later cardiop;ranh showed, however, thathis heart muscle had been damaged. He had anotherless severe attack v/ednesday night (22nd), and so isback in the hospital, this time for several weeks. V/ecertainly need the prayers of all the brethren, aswell as their continued financial backing, \/ith himlaid aside, I have to take care of things as best asI can. Our baby is due very soon now, so you canappreciateour need for strength beyond our own. Butin'spite of this, our hearts are rejoicing in G-od'smercies, and can truly say, "Though Ha slay me, yetwill I trust Him." He has never betrayed o\xr trust.

God bless your ministry there, brother. It means alot to us here.

JAMAICA NEWS LETTER OF THE PHILLIPS FAMILYDECEMBER 1952

H/VLF-WAY-TREE P.O. JAMAICA B.W.I.

DEAR CHRISTL'lN FRIENDS:

AS ANOTHER YEAR COMES TO ITS CLOSE we are amazedwhen v/e count the many blessings which our God inHis infinite mercy has showered out upon us. We areunxTOrthy of His goodness, yet, with the angels andshepherds of old we raise our voices in thanksgivingfor His boundless love,

IT IS OUR PRAYER that in 1953 we can be used moreeffectively for Christ in Jamaica, You by yourgifts, prayers, and encouragement have enabled us topreach Christ in spite of many difficulties. Youhave provided the means for clothing many vdio werenaked, feeding some who vrere hungry, teaching hmd-reds who were imtaught, and making Christ live in

the li'^es of scores who were lost, hopeless and helpless in sin,

THE GOSPEL IS STILL GOD'S POWER unto salvation for all men. God is not willing thatany should perish and we have seen the* gospel transform lives in Jamaica. Over five-hundred have been baptised into Christ, many have put sin out of their lives by truerepentance, homes have been united by the Good News, new churches have been established and in all we humbly pray that Christ has been exalted as King of kings andLord of lords.

CHRISTM»\S IS Fi\R DIFFERENT in Jamaica than in our own homeland. Poverty, which isnever far away in Jamaica seems even closer during the Christmas season. Men whowould not steal at any other time of the year simply cannot^watch while their children go hungry at Christmas time and extra polic protection is all that keeps everyhome from being rifled. Crowds fill the streets demanding work, political unrestreaches its height, the ancient "John Canoe" dancers with all their sensua^, heathenrites from African beginnings hold fifll away. TheChrist of God is often forgotten and certainly thereis no "Peace on earth and Good will among men," Willyou earnestly pray with us that God will have hisway with these people?

WE HAVE GOOD NEWS. Marjorie Carol Phillips arrivedNovember 21, 1952 at about ten o-* clock in the morning, She weighed six pounds eight ounces and we arealready very proud of our new daughter. Both Marj-orie and baby Carol are doing fine, and both sendtheir love to all of you in America, Marjorie Carolis looking for a "Living Link" and her parents arepraying that some church will want her for their own"Little Missionary."
