Do you have an interest in serving patients and want to be an important part of a medical team, or are you looking to expand your credentials in health care? Train to become a Phlebotomy Technician as a first step to a health care career on a pathway to becoming a Patient Care Technician or Medical Assistant. Entry level salaries for Phlebotomists on Long Island start at approximately $32,000 according to the New York State Department of Labor. e health care industry on Long Island is one of the fastest growing sectors, and solid job growth is projected for health care professionals with phlebotomy skills. Employment opportunities exist in doctor’s offices, nursing homes, hospitals, blood banks, and other health care facilities. PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN In this 90-hour program, students will become familiar with all aspects related to blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipunctures for lab analysis. Classroom and lab work includes: terminology; anatomy and physiology; safety; blood collection procedures; specimen hands-on practice; and training in techniques to perform puncture methods. During the lab sessions, students will first perform phlebotomy on a practice arm and then perform venipunctures on other students. Textbook and materials are included. An optional 40-hour clinical externship rotation is available for no additional fee. To be eligible for the clinical rotation, students must successfully complete the 90-hour program, provide a resume, complete a drug screen, background check, medical exam and provide proof of immunization. Background check* and drug screening are additional costs. Students are also required to purchase light blue scrubs. CE1 261 B1 Meets: Monday and Wednesday, 6:00pm -9:30pm, for 26 sessions February 10 – May 20, 2020 NHA exam is scheduled for Wednesday, May 27, 2020. Clinical Externship Hours: 40 hours (optional) to begin after course completion. Fee: $1,795 CERTIFICATION Students who complete this program may pursue the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Phlebotomy Technician Certification Exam (or another certifying exam). Student must have a HS diploma or equivalent and a current government-issued photo ID. For NHA certification, candidate must provide evidence of 30 successful venipunctures and 10 successful capillary sticks on live individuals. LOOK AHEAD AND BECOME A PATIENT CARE TECHNICIAN Courses at Nassau Community College may be taken individually. A student who is interested in taking the Patient Care Technician Certification exam offered by NHA should complete: Phlebotomy Technician, EKG Technician, Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Terminology, First Aid and CPR. Non-Credit Refund Policy: The fee is refundable when a course is canceled by the College. The fee is refundable to the student whose written request for withdrawal has been received by the Office of Workforce Development & Lifelong Learning prior to the beginning of the class. A 50% refund of the fee may be made to the student who has applied in writing to the Office of Workforce Development & Lifelong Learning prior to the second session of the class.
