It’s the time of year when store shelves start filling up with varieties of calendars of all descriptions. Puppies, pin-ups, hotrods, superheroes, and the list is endless. But a mainstay of calendars has always been the scenic landscape, with sunsets behind palm trees, or the rolling hills of Europe, or other very literal representations of a scenic location. This issue of PH features landscapes that aspire beyond the traditional calendar art. The images here have far more drama and personal expression, ranging from minimalist to almost apocalyptic in their depiction. Not something you’d find in the calendars they might give away at the bank. Many images here make use of long-exposure techniques that can smooth rough seas, turn rivers into mist, and clouds into dreamscapes. An early morning and a neutral density filter can extend an exposure from a fraction of a second to several minutes. Instead of freezing a specific instant, it conveys the passing of time that can be serene, or sometimes unsettling. We invite you to pass a little time seeing our wonderous world from some new perpectives in these pages.

Beyond calendar art

At heart I’m a coastal photographer drawn to the flow of the sea and the ever changing possibilities of shore, sea and sky. Coastal landscapes may often offer a simple geography of a beach, the sea and a cloudscape and as such there is a challenge to construct new and inventive interpretations.

The Sea Fever project is my interpretation of those seascapes and of the close affinity between sea and sky. During August 2013, the work was exhibited at Masters of Vision.A book of the Sea Fever images is available from seafeverbook.co.uk.

A young travel photographer from Russia.

Creating minimalistic black and white photographs of famous parks and gardens, shorelines and city sights, shooting them out of the tourist season. His works are full of gloomy weather - dark clouds, mist, rain, and the strong wind. Due to bad weather conditions and poor light most of photographs are made with long exposures.

The solitude in his photographs expresses the detachment from the present, showing the famous places not as the centers of entertainment but as the part of history.

A finalist of the following contests: Prix de la Photographie (France), Black & White Spider Awards (England), Best Photographer (Russia); honorable mention in International Photography Awards (USA).

Having solo and group exhibitions, publications in magazines. His works can be found in galleries and private collections.

Francesco Gola was born 1981 in Pavia, Italy. He currently lives and works in Italy. After taking his Master Degree in Electrical Engineering he started travel for his company, and he found in photography the perfect escape to the chaotic world.

Time. Since you are young, your parents try to teach you that Time is the most precious resource that life gives to you. Unfortunately, as frequently happens in life, you have to find out for yourself to understand that.

When I started to work for my company I understood that the time to really enjoy my life was tailing off very fast. I had to escape. But how can you escape when you are trapped in the frenzy of modern life?

So I picked up my camera and I sought refuge in the Nature where I found peace for my Soul wandering in the silence. I found that while I was deep in Nature, I was able to think to nothing: job, love, life, troubles, everything disappear. It is like living in a parallel universe, and in this universe I learned to see the world with different eyes: the eyes of mind.

“Beyond my eyes” is a project about what the eyes of mind can see. Working with long exposures I realized that you don’t freeze just a moment, but an entire period of time. You can transform your picture in a hourglass. It’s the concrete representation of the parallel universe I mentioned before.

“Beyond my eyes” is a universe where the main characters are Time and Silence that take shape trough what the mind is able to see.I’m lost in this endless space..and I don’t want to come back.

I live in Sant Joan D’EspÌ (Barcelona-Catalunya). I am passionate about photography because it allows me to unleash my creativity. Thanks to my profession, informatic, I’m also familiar with the editing software that can not only correct a picture, but also help me “imagine” a scene and translate the image in my minde to the finished photograph.

Many of my pictures are dominated by strong colors and scenes with a dramatic touch. I guess I’m influenced by another of my passions, movies, and my favorite director, Tim Burton. I like to think that we both have a unique way of seeing the world.

I hope you like my work and if you want to see some more of my work, please do not hesitate to visit my flickr page.

was born on 29 July 1962 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.

Photography was just a hobby in his school years, but since 2007 it has become a real passion for him.

He prefers black and white landscape photography, long exposures, square format. For him photography is something very intimate. It’s an escape from his daily routine and a means to let others visualize the world through his point of view.

He has always tried to make viewer feel the atmosphere and the emotion in the frame, refracted through his worldview, which is frequently different from the reality.

I´m from São Paulo, Brazil.Biology is my profession and with the passion for life came along my passion for photography. I started taking photos in 2002, with a compact digital camera. Basically, my main interests were macrophotography of animal and plants.Since then, I have grown a lot as a photographer. I discovered bw film, others subjects and approaches to express my art. Now, my interest have changed, embracing macrophotography, wildlife, landscape, portraits, urban and night photos, digital or film, color or black & white.

The beauty all around us is my inspiration – my camera started of as a tool for my oil paintings then I got hooked with the images that I can create with the camera – while out walking the dogs I come across the wonders of nature.
