The Western Australian education system is world class. In Perth, a city of just over 2 million, there are five universities one of which is a Go8.
The k-12 education framework offers parents a choice of outstanding government and non-government schools.
The government schools are all co-educational and all follow the national curriculum.
The non-government schools are independent schools that offer a choice of a single sex or co-educational environment and day attendance or a boarding option.
Government and non-government schools equally enjoy high status in achieving outstanding results in the university ATAR (Academic Tertiary Admission Rank).
Most schools offer a specialisation stream such as Science and Math, Arts and the Humanities, Languages and Sports. Some parents choose a school according to their child’s special interests or talents. Most parents however choose a school according to the area where they reside.
The k-12 Education FrameworkKindergarten to Year 4 Junior Primary
Years 5 - 6 Upper Primary
Years 7 - 10 Middle School
Years 11 - 12 Senior Secondary
During years 11 and 12 students prepare for their WACE (Western Australian Certificate of Education). At the end of Year 12 students sit for their final examinations and their final ATAR result is determined through the combination of their continuous assessments achieved during years 11 and 12 and the results in their final examination (50/50).
There are however many ways to enter university in Australia and entry through the final examination system (ATAR) now only accounts for 50% of the students entering university. Other avenues that are becoming popular are through a Pathway Program in a non-secondary provider, through the WACE Certificate only or through a portfolio.

THE CURRICULUMThe Junior Programs at Phoenix are organised around the four-macro skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing and their application in academic environments. Furthermore, all programs consider the areas of study that our students will specialise in, social skills, language learning strategies and school life. This approach is intended to be holistic in nature and endeavours to paint the “big picture” for children entering mainstream school. Cross Curriculum areas in social science, STEM and physical education are also taken into consideration as a basis for future learning and competence in life.Consistent with the philosophy of Phoenix, the spiral approach to teaching is used. This method involves constant repetition and practice of the various skills, strategies and approaches necessary for mainstream Primary and Secondary school preparation.
High School Preparation
The Phoenix Junior programs are specifically designed to achieve the following broad aims:
To increase the children’s understanding and use of English
To encourage children to participate in cultural activities to develop their understanding of Australian Society
To increase children’s’ confidence to enable them to participate in social and academic situations
To help the children develop an understanding of how they learn best and encourage autonomous learning
To encourage collaborative learning
To enhance language learning through song, music, play and performance
To develop motor skills
The Phoenix High School and Young Learners Programs have been created to prepare children between the ages of 6-17 years for the specialised and advanced language and academic skills required in mainstream primary or secondary school settings.

• Intensive study of English Language - grammar and language functions
• English language training in secondary school skill areas related to High School subjects
• Reading and Note Taking strategies and skills• Essay Writing Skills• Oral Communication and Listening Skills • IT Studies, Media Studies , Drama• Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Skills• Australian History & Culture• Study skills, research skills, speed reading, writing reports
