Maximise your cereal crops’ yield potential with Adama’s strong and innovative cereal product portfolio. You will then be sure your crops are protected, healthy and high performing throughout the season.

INSECTICIDEFUNGICIDE CROP ENHANCEMENT

Why ADAMA is your best choiceAdama has a proven history in providing quality products in the New Zealand cereal market and continues to add new and differentiated products that enhance crop protection.

By introducing PHOENIX, a unique multi-site protectant for speckled leaf blotch (Septoria tritici) and scald, Adama has been at the forefront in resistance management and effective fungicide programmes for wheat and barley.

Extensive research has further led to the introduction of BOLIDE, an innovative all-rounder fungicide with a broader spectrum of control of key cereal diseases.

Another ground-breaking product is OPTIMUS. This plant growth regulator maximises the rate of plant uptake, reducing lodging in wheat, barley and oats and promoting seed yield increases in ryegrass seed crops.

Add to that MAVRIK DUO, a powerful new insecticide combining both solid knockdown and long persistence for aphid control in cereals, and you can easily see why Adama’s cereal product portfolio is your best choice to fully maximise the potential of your cereal crops.

Fungicide programmes need to be built from the foundation up with multi-site protectants at the start. Only then can Septoria resistance be managed effectively. Moreover, fungicide programmes need to start early, be well-timed and incorporate robust doses.

Therefore, for your fungicide programme to be successful, you need to take the following into account: • Always start the mix with a multi-site fungicide in the tank first (see fig. 1).• Maximise the use of multi-site fungicides early in the programme.• Limit the number of SDHI sprays.• Use less DMI sprays. Use robust doses in an SDHI mix at T1 or T2 instead.

WHY PHOENIX?

PHOENIX is a unique multi-site protectant for wheat and barley, working on 3 sites.

Adding PHOENIX to your fungicide programme:

• Stops further resistance to Septoria developing.

• Improves efficacy of single-site chemistry.

• Enhances DMI uptake into the plant.

• Reduces Septoria infection.

With its unique multi-site protectant activity PHOENIX is your ideal partner to combat Septoria and scald resistance in wheat and barley.

Septoria has become a severe issue for New Zealand’s cereal industry. It can have a devastating impact on your crops.

This is especially the case when Septoria becomes resistant to established fungicide modes of action. It is therefore even more important to practice good resistance management in the field.

Why is application timing critical?

The right application timing is significant for controlling Septoria. Septoria has a very long latent period (14 – 42 days). Crops will be infected long before disease symptoms show.

When to apply? At T1!The best timing to apply a multi-site protectant like PHOENIX with a DMI fungicide such as BOLIDE or STELLAR is at T1, when leaf 3 emerges. An infected leaf 3 can easily infect leaf 2 and the flag leaf. Thus, keeping leaf 3 clean is essential for maintaining full yield potential as the crop reaches maturity. This is the time to control Septoria with an effective and adequate fungicide programme.

Timing of T1 application is key

Well-timed T1 applications with multi-site protectant PHOENIX are considered to be one of the most important to get on top of disease pressure. They:

• Provide protection against Septoria to whichever leaves they are applied to.

• Maximise the uptake of partner products. Studies have shown that PHOENIX enhances DMI uptake into the plant, increasing their speed of action and efficacy. This makes PHOENIX truly unique.

Why PHOENIX is essential for your fungicide programme

PHOENIX is an innovative cereal fungicide (Phthalimide – Group M4). Folpet, the active ingredient in PHOENIX, works against the disease at a cellular level using a multi-site mode of action. It inhibits both spore germination and cell division and reduces energy production in the mitochondria. Moreover, it is classified as having a “low” resistance risk. In fact, there is no resistance known to folpet globally.

New Zealand trials Wakanui wheat trial, Methven 2015-16Extensive research has also been conducted in New Zealand. Results show that adding PHOENIX to commonly used DMIs (STELLAR and Proline®) significantly reduced the level of Septoria infection in leaf 2 in Wakanui wheat (see fig. 2). Moreover, grain yield was improved as well (significantly for Proline only, see fig. 3).

International trials Effects of folpet on resistanceThe effectiveness of multi-site protectants for reducing resistance has also been confirmed in research conducted in the UK and Ireland. When mixing PHOENIX with DMIs and SDHIs in field sensitivity trials, there was a reduction in selection pressure compared to straight DMIs or SDHIs. Overseas modelling further shows that the useful life of high risk chemistry like DMIs and SDHIs increases with the addition of multi-site protectants like PHOENIX. This is vitally important as there are a limited number of chemical groups available for controlling Septoria.

WHY BOLIDE?

BOLIDE is an innovative all-rounder fungicide. It provides you with:• Broader spectrum control of key cereal diseases. Two active ingredients work together to control a wide range of diseases, including rust, powdery mildew, glume blotch, ear disease complex and tan spot.• Excellent performance against Septoria.BOLIDE works highly effectively with PHOENIX.

How does BOLIDE work?BOLIDE is taken up via the stem and foliage and is translocated upwards and outwards to provide some protection to new growth. BOLIDE has curative activity against early stages of infection. However, optimum results are obtained from application prior to the onset of infection.

BOLIDE is your all-rounder fungicide for wheat and barley featuring a unique mixture to give you a broader spectrum of control against key diseases.

BOLIDE features an innovative combination of two powerful GROUP 3 DMI fungicides – epoxiconazole and prochloraz. This makes it a powerful contact and systemic fungicide for a wide range of diseases.

BOLIDE provides you with a broader spectrum of control against key diseases of wheat and barley than other DMIs on the market. Its all-rounder efficacy is backed by international and New Zealand trials.

By combining protectant, curative and eradicative properties BOLIDE is an excellent performer with Septoria. It further provides very good rust, powdery mildew, glume blotch, ear disease complex and tan spot control. So instead of applying multiple products to battle disease, with BOLIDE you only need one!

BOLIDE is also the perfect partner for PHOENIX. Together they not only work highly effectively, but further future-proof your resistance management strategy. With BOLIDE you’ve really got infection protection covered!

When to apply BOLIDE?The ideal timing for BOLIDE is T1, when leaf 3 emerges, to effectively control diseases such as Septoria, rust (leaf, yellow and common), powdery mildew, glume blotch and tan spot.

Application at T3 is also recommended, because BOLIDE provides robust control of ear disease complex, including fusarium and late season rust.

New Zealand trialsWakanui wheat trial, Methven 2015-16Several years’ worth of trials in New Zealand prove the effectiveness of BOLIDE against Septoria. For instance, trial results with Wakanui wheat show that BOLIDE is at least as effective as industry standard DMIs for controlling Septoria. In fact, BOLIDE performs as well as industry standard SDHIs. It significantly reduced the level of infection in leaf 2 (see fig. 4) and improved wheat yield compared with STELLAR (see fig. 5).

WHY STELLAR?

• Industry standard for rust control in wheat• Systemic DMI fungicide for wheat, barley, maize and ryegrassSTELLAR partners exceedingly well with PHOENIX on wheat and barley.

STELLAR is a systemic fungicide (epoxiconazole) for disease control in wheat, barley, maize and ryegrass seed crops. It is a triazole fungicide in the DMI group of fungicides.

STELLAR is absorbed through the foliage and stem. It controls fungi by disrupting cell wall development. It is translocated upwards in the plant and provides some protection to new growth.

STELLAR has both protectant and curative activity on a broad spectrum of diseases. It is particularly efficient when it comes to controlling rust and considered to be the industry standard for rust control in wheat.

WHY APHIDEX?

• Fast-acting insecticide for controlling aphids• Fumigant action in warmer weather

APHIDEX is a fast-acting carbamate insecticide, which affects the nervous system of aphids. Control is primarily by direct contact with the spray and by fumigant action within the crop, particularly under warm conditions. APHIDEX is also partially systemic and is ingested with the sap when aphids feed on treated plants.

WHY MAVRIK AQUAFLO?• Only SP insecticide for aphid control that is safe to most of the key beneficial insects in cereal crops• Long persistence

With its long persistence on the leaf MAVRIK Aquaflo (tau-fluvalinate) provides effective control of insect pests, particularly aphids, in cereals.

MAVRIK Aquaflo is a synthetic pyrethroid (SP) insecticide, the only one that is safe to most of the key beneficials.

Low toxicity thanks to unique chemistry The unique chemistry of MAVRIK Aquaflo means it has low toxicity to beneficial insects such as pollinators, parasites, predators and fungal feeders. Spiders and harvestmen are the notable exceptions (see fig. 6). When MAVRIK Aquaflo is applied during non-foraging periods, applications will not interfere with the activity of honey-bees once spray has dried.

How does MAVRIK Aquaflo work? MAVRIK Aquaflo affects the nervous systems of susceptible insects after direct contact or ingestion. It also has a repellant effect. Aphids tend not to enter sprayed crops while they can detect the chemical.

WHY MAVRIK DUO?• Solid knockdown and long persistence for the control of aphids in cereals• More beneficial-friendly compared to similar mixtures

MAVRIK DUO combines the active ingredients of MAVRIK Aquaflo and APHIDEX, providing fast, solid knockdown.

By capturing the benefits of these complementary modes of action, MAVRIK DUO saves you both time and hassle. Tank-mixing and applying two products becomes a thing of the past.

MAVRIK DUO INSECTICIDE

How does MAVRIK DUO work?MAVRIK DUO works through direct contact, residual effect and fumigant action (when sprayed at temperatures over 15°C). It is also translaminar, penetrating through to the underside of leaves. This makes MAVRIK DUO particularly effective on crops with a dense canopy.

Do not apply MAVRIK DUO where bees are foraging or likely to visit treated plants before spray has dried.

With MAVRIK DUO you get knockdown and persistence all in one

OPTIMUS CROP ENHANCEMENT

WHY OPTIMUS?

OPTIMUS is the most advanced formulation of trinexapac-ethyl currently available. OPTIMUS• Maximises the rate of plant uptake due to its highly lipohilic nature.• Consistently reduces the risk of lodging in wheat, barley and oats.• Promotes seed yield in ryegrass seed crops.

OPTIMUS (trinexapac-ethyl) is a plant growth regulator with a unique, advanced formulation that allows for more efficient plant uptake. OPTIMUS reduces the risk of lodging in wheat, barley and oats. It also promotes seed yield in ryegrass seed crops by shortening straw length and delaying lodging.

OPTIMUS is easy to use and comes with improved rainfastness. What is more, OPTIMUS provides you with consistent and predictable results.

How does OPTIMUS work?OPTIMUS is absorbed rapidly through the leaves and stems of grass and cereal plants. It then moves quickly to the growing points. Trinexapac-ethyl is converted to trinexapac in the plant tissue, which slows growth by inhibiting gibberellin synthesis. This reduces cell elongation, shortens internode length and reduces plant height. In ryegrass, shortened straw length and delayed lodging results in an increased seed set.

Reduce risk of lodging and increase seed yield with OPTIMUS

Unique spray droplet characteristics

Due to the unique characteristics of its spray droplets OPTIMUS maximises the contact surface area with the leaf surface. As a result, the uptake of trinexapac-ethyl increases and is more efficient (see fig. 7).

Laboratory studies show that when compared to the market leading brand, the amount of trinexapac-ethyl taken up with OPTIMUS is significantly higher. By using 14C labelled trinexapac-ethyl the research confirms the benefits of the advanced formulation.

Almost 90% of the applied dose of OPTIMUS is being taken up by the plant within 5 hours compared to less than 40% for the current market leading brand (see fig. 8).

NEW HIGHER RATES FOR RYEGRASS

Results from trials* undertaken by the Foundation of Arable Research (FAR) in 2012-13 show that a higher OPTIMUS rate leads to a significant seed yield increase in Nui ryegrass (see fig. 9).

What is more, the trial further demonstrated that the same yield results were achieved when comparing Moddus® and OPTIMUS, although less active ingredient (AI) was applied with OPTIMUS. In particular, the research found that all yields were statistically equivalent with the following active ingredient (AI) rates:

• Moddus 1.2 L/ha (300g AI) and OPTIMUS 1.1 L/ha (~200g AI) • Moddus 1.6 L/ha (400g AI) and OPTIMUS 1.7 L/ha (300g AI) • Moddus 2.4 L/ha (600g AI) and OPTIMUS 2.3 L/ha (400g AI)

Yield response will vary with cultivar and growing conditions.
