REV. 1/16 About Eric Fischl

Born in New York City in 1948, Eric Fischl grew up in the suburbs of Long Island, his parents having moved there shortly before his second year. “Safer place to raise a family,” they used to say. Against a backdrop of alcoholism and a country club culture obsessed with image over content, Fischl became focused on the rift between what was experienced and what could not be said. Until the late 70’s, suburbia was not considered a legitimate genre for art. With his first New York show at the Edward Thorp Gallery, epithets like “psycho-sexual suburban dramas” became velcroed to his disturbing images of dysfunctional family life. Fischl began his art education in Phoenix, Arizona where his parents had moved in 1967. He attended Phoenix College, then studied for a year at Arizona State University, and ultimately earned his BFA in 1972 at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California. After graduation, he moved to Chicago, where he worked as a guard at the Museum of Contemporary Art. It was in Chicago that Fischl was exposed to the non-mainstream art of the Hairy Who. “The underbelly, carnie world of Ed Paschke and the hilarious sexual vulgarity of Jim Nutt were revelatory experiences for me,” Fischl has said. In 1974, he began teaching painting at the highly touted Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, where he met his future wife, the painter April Gornik. In 1978, the couple moved to New York City, where they continue to live and work. In 2005, Fischl returned to Phoenix College and launched the “Eric Fischl Lecture Series,” an annual event that has drawn hundreds of students, artists and educators to campus every spring for an engaging discourse about various themes focused on art. In conjunction with the lecture series, Fischl has created a scholarship program to recognize talented and deserving students studying art at Phoenix College, and as such has created a legacy of future artists that are certain to make their mark in the community in the years to come. In 2007, Fischl was inducted into the Phoenix College Alumni Association (PCAA) Hall of Fame, in recognition of his ongoing efforts on behalf of Phoenix College and its students. In 2009, the “Fischl Art Gallery” was dedicated honoring his ongoing support of Phoenix College.

Student Artist Reflections Heather Holyan, Fischl Art Scholar “The Eric Fischl Scholars Program has been immensely beneficial to me. The last year I have seen myself grow as an artist and person and the program has been a significant factor in that. I have been challenged by my courses, teachers, mentors and classmates. The program has supported and encouraged me when I felt ambivalent about my future as an artist. I have the most contact with Loman Clark from the program and our monthly meetings have been wonderful. We have great conversations and his interest in my success keeps me thinking positively and focused. I have met some great teachers at Phoenix College. Specifically, Mr. Jon Haddock and Ms. Christina Park have been teachers and mentors to me and instrumental in my growth and focus! I am excited for the upcoming semester and look forward to applying to an MFA program in January. Thank you for your continual support!” Ben Peck, Fischl Art Scholar “The past year I have been in the scholars program has been more forming, solidifying, and validating than I knew possible. I applied for the program with friends, students, and faculty that believed in me more than I believed in myself. Receiving the scholarship gave me the validation that I should be doing art. The instruction I have had from my mentor and counselor has immensely pushed me further in my art work and degree. The tuition coverage has allowed me to graduate debt free with my Associates degree in the fall of 2014. The money saved and the additional finances provided for books and art supplies has enabled me to invest in the quality supplies I need and ultimately, spend less time at my retail job and more time making art. I have grown more this year than I ever have, as an artist and a person. And it’s humbling to see that it is the contribution of others that has made my work fruitful. In April at the annual Phoenix College Student Show, I received first place with a sculpture and third place with a painting. In May, I had my first sale at a downtown Phoenix gallery. I am showing with another downtown gallery in July and have more opportunities ahead. To say the Scholars program opened doors for me is an understatement; it has shown me places I never knew existed or believed I could go…this program goes a long way. Thanks!” Laura Favela, Fischl Art Scholar “My first year in college was possible thanks to the Eric Fischl Scholars Program. As a scholarship recipient, I was able to enjoy, and receive an education without the worry of tuition bills. Not having to acquire employment to afford my college tuition allowed me time to focus and explore myself and my college as a student and an artist. With the aid of our student advocate and my mentor I am able to create a path through Phoenix College leading, and encouraging me to then follow a BFA program at a university, such as ASU. The Eric Fischl Scholars Program has provided me with more than tuition and books. It has given me hope and the ability to achieve within my education. As a foreign artist under Deferred Action, I found it tough to find financial aid through scholarships, unless you planned to become a lawyer, or a doctor. This scholarship has allowed me to follow a path to a career that I am passionate about, and I can never be more grateful and thankful for being selected for such a prestigious group as is Eric Fischl Scholars Program.”
