This year I am skipping the appreciation piece where I talk about how great the Phoenix Film Festival is, how excited we are to have the International Horror & Sci-Fi Film Festival become a major part of our programming over the Festival’s eight

days, how much we are looking forward to the Arizona Student Film Festival moving to June this year, and how IFP-Phoenix continues to provide education, networking and training opportunities for the filmmakers and film students of Arizona.

Instead, I am asking you to help us out with our mission. Our hard-working Board of Directors have brought together some amazing partners this year, and if it wasn’t for them - there is no Festival.

However, we are always looking for more support. This event is so spectacular that many people have no idea that the Phoenix Film Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization. We subsist solely on donations, grants, partnerships, and Festival

admissions and submissions. If you think the Festival would be a good fit for

your company, we want you. We need you. Contact Jason Carney, the Foundation’s Executive Director at [email protected] and offer your support.

I also encourage you to bid at the silent auction, buy some Festival merchandise, buy a pass instead of a single ticket, see as many movies you can with as many people as you can encourage to come out, and if you want to just make a tax-deductible donation - we would appreciate it greatly.

Thanks again to everyone who supports the efforts of the Phoenix Film Foundation. And everyone that volunteers tirelessly to make this an organization that makes everyone that comes in contact with it a better person.

How I Learned to Navigate the Film Festival in Five Easy StepsWelcome film lovers! If you’ve never been to a huge film festival that is considered one of the top film festivals in the United States, here you are!

So, what exactly do you do at a “film festival”?Good question! You can watch a lot of new films

– all of the movies that are shown here at the PFF are all Valley-wide premieres, with the occasional retrospective thrown in for good measure. So you can watch movies!

I want to see movies. What do I do?Another good question! You can either go

through the program that you hold in your hand, or go on to the PFF website. All of the films that screen at the festival are covered in the program and on the website. There’s a plethora of films – narrative features, documentary features, short films, foreign films – all there for you to watch at your leisure.

Where do I get tickets to see the movies?Another really good question! You can buy passes

online or at the Festival Welcome Center located three doors down from the Harkins Scottsdale 101 Theatres. After you get a pass, you need to pick your films – get there early so your choices aren’t sold out!

If you have a ticket for a screening, you are guaranteed a seat. If you don’t want a pass, you can buy single tickets both online and at the Welcome Center. But why come to the Festival just to see one movie? Buy a pass, save some much-needed dollars in this economy, and have a great time!

Do I have to wait in a line to see a movie?Yes. You do have to wait in lines for the films. I know,

I know. But there’s so many movies, and so many audience members! How else can we keep track? But the audience lines will give you a chance to talk to your fellow film lovers! What’s the hot ticket? When is it playing again? It’s a huge film community for one special week plus a day in Arizona! Have fun!

There are 3 different lines – based on which pass or ticket you have. Line 1 is VIP/Filmmaker/Press – so if you have one of those passes, then you can sit first! Line 2 is for Full Festival Pass-holders. And Line 3 is for the Flex Pass/Single Ticket holders. Are you a little jealous because you don’t want to wait in your line, you want the other line? You can upgrade onsite at the Festival Welcome Center anytime during the Festival!

So I heard there’s other stuff going on? What’s that all about?

You can’t just watch movies every minute of every day. Okay, some of you can. But for the rest of us – here’s a chance to check out the biggest film party in Arizona! You should check out the Festival Party Pavilion during Opening Weekend. We’ve taken over a former huge retail space a few buildings down the sidewalk, so just follow the signs!

That’s where the stage is, all the cool performances like the DJs, the burlesque show, the belly dancers, the bars and the parties, as well as the free seminars, our great partner booths where they give stuff away, and our silent auction where you can buy stuff and help out this amazing, struggling non-profit!

What makes this “film festival” different than just going to the movies?

There are filmmakers actually live at the Festival. A lot of them. They talk before the films, they talk after the films, they talk during the seminars and workshops, and they talk during the parties. Luckily, they won’t talk during the movies. The best part is that they will talk to you! Introduce yourself! Tell them that you liked their movie. They love that!

Okay, I’m sold. Anything else I should know?Please make sure if you have any questions, ask our

friendly Volunteer Staff! They are wearing shirts that say Festival Crew! They can help you out! We have over a hundred volunteers who work on the festival. They love movies. Just like you!

Dan HarkinsOver the years, Dan has built a reputation as a leader and innovator, both in the theatre industry and the local community. He is an unprecedented three-time recipient of the nationally coveted Showman of the Year award. The American Institute of Architects awarded Dan the 1996 Community Vision award. He’s also received the 1998 Arizona Business Leadership award for outstanding leadership and corporate growth and the 1999 Entrepreneur of the Year award. But perhaps more important to Dan are the awards his theatres garner from Arizona moviegoers: Best Place to Watch a Movie, Best Programming and Best Movie Snacks, to name a few.

Harkins’ leadership and creativity goes beyond the world of movies. Over the past 20 years, Harkins Theatres has helped set a new standard for charitable giving in the Western U.S. through charity benefit premieres and screenings, souvenir and holiday gift sales and public service announcements on the movie screens. The company has helped many schools and organizations raise millions of dollars.

The Phoenix Film Festival Copper Wing Tribute Award is given annually to an actor, director, writer, producer or executive for their contribution to film. We will continue that tradition during opening weekend of this year’s festival.

Michael BiehnMichael Connell Biehn is an American actor best

known for his roles in James Cameron’s science fiction action films, THE TERMINATOR, ALIENS and THE ABYSS. Michael was born in Aniston, Alabama to parents Marcia and Don Biehn. He is the second of three children. When he was very young, he and his family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska. They moved again to Lake Havasu, Arizona where he graduated high school.

The budding actor realized his love for film at a young age and was awarded a drama scholarship to

The University of Arizona. In his first year, Michael realized college wasn’t for him and moved to Los Angeles in 1976. It wouldn’t take long for the film industry to recognize talent in the young star. He was given his first role a year later in a pilot called JAMES AT 16. The next year, Michael starred opposite Cathy Lee Crosby in his first feature film, COACH. And if you look close enough, you can spot Michael in the blockbuster hit GREASE, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton John. Since then, his film and television career has skyrocketed.

His list of credits include the Oscar-nominated film THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, THE FAN, STILETTO, DEADLY INTENTIONS, THE SEVENTH SIGN, TOMBSTONE, THE ROCK, GRINDHOUSE, PLANET TERROR and NAVY SEALS opposite Charlie Sheen. Michael has proven invaluable to award-winning director James Cameron, being cast in three of his films, TERMINATOR, THE ABYSS, and ALIENS. He has also starred in two of director Franc Roddam’s films, K2 and THE LORDS OF DISCIPLINE. His foray into television has had him guest-starring in several high-profile series, including DARK BLUE, LAW AND ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT and HILL STREET BLUES.

Comedy isn’t a genre Michael is famous for, but his first and only attempt gained him recognition. His comedic role in SUSAN’S PLAN, directed by John Landis, was well received by critics. He appeared last year in PUNCTURE with Chris Evans and Mark Kassen. This year will be a busy one for Michael, his portrayal as Mickey in THE DIVIDE, directed by Xavier Gens, will be released in 2012.

He is making his directorial debut with THE VICTIM, which just played in Spain at the very prestigious Sitges Film Festival as an official selection in the Midnite X-treme program.

Kids’ day


Kids’ Day at the Phoenix Film Festival presented by IFP-PhoenixSaturday, March 31, 2012 | 9am to 2pm

Kids’ Day is a great opportunity for children 5-12 years old to participate in a variety of fun film activity stations. The stations feature hands-on activities focusing on different aspects of film production. Stations are age appropriate and run the full gamut of the filmmaking process.

Also on Saturday, the whole family is invited to attend family-friendly films that morning and afternoon for just $5 each.

Bring a flash drive with at least 2g of space and you can take your creations home with you.

For the tenth year, the Phoenix Film Critics Society is pleased to provide the judges for the Phoenix Film Festival. All judges are members of the Phoenix Film Critics Society.

FeaturesDavid RamseyDavid Ramsey is the President and co-founder of the Phoenix Film Critics Society and a voting member of the Broadcast Film Critics Society (“The Critics Choice Movie Awards”), David has been reviewing Films and DVDs on TV, on radio and in print for over 17 years in the Valley. His reviews can be seen on Fridays on KPHO-TV’s “CBS 5 Morning News” and ABC 15/KPNX-TV’s “Sonoran Living Live”. He writes Film and DVD reviews for Arizona Player Magazine and is the Home Entertainment Editor of WildAboutMovies.com.

Roger TennisRoger Tennis is the Co-founder and Vice President of the Phoenix Film Critics Society, Roger is the creator of the long-running national television series CLIPS and co-creator, with wife Janet, of the popular CLIPS website Cinemaclips.com. Roger is also a voting member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (“The Critics’ Choice Movie Awards”) and has worked in the television industry for over 30 years.

Michael DixonMichael Dixon has been a Valley radio and television personality and performing arts critic for 30 years, and is heard nationally over CBS radio. Currently the film reviewer for Fox-10 Television in Phoenix, he has also served as music, theatre and dance critic for The Phoenix Gazette, and has given workshops to aspiring theatre critics at UCLA. A graduate in theatre from the University of California, Riverside, he spent three seasons as Artist-in-Residence with the California Inland Shakespeare Festival. He is a member of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA).

Neil CohenNeil Cohen (Echo Magazine): Neil has been the Film/Theater Critic for Echo Magazine for the past seventeen years, and has been active in the theater community for thirty years. He is a playwright whose shows include Murder By Proxy, Suburban Guerrilla Warfare and Vampire Death Frenzy. He is honored to judge the fine films of this year’s PFF.

George GrorudGeorge Grorud graduated in 1977 with a degree in Journalism from the University of Oregon. Up until his retirement, he served as Film Editor for JAVA Magazine from 1994 to 2010. He continues to be one of the original members of the Phoenix Film Critics Society.

World Cinema FeaturesStan RobinsonStan Robinson, a retired First Assistant Director, has 22 years of film production experience. Sunday, April 1st at 11:35amSynopsis: From the opening shot this film takes the audience on an unbelievable journey with breathtaking scenery and an up-close-and-personal look at one of natures’ most elusive animals, the wolf. The film follows world renowned animal trainer Andrew Simpson as he travels to the other side of the world. Together with his Canadian crew and his pack of wolves he sets out on a journey of discovery to make the biggest wolf film ever attempted. Staying in a remote camp in the middle of the Siberian Mountains they endure harsh conditions where the temperature drops to -60 C. The crew and the wolves are tested daily both physically and mentally on a daily basis. Wolves are one of the most misunderstood animals of all time. In this film you will see them in another light as they try and overcome their wild instincts and respond to commands that go against everything that nature has instilled in them. This film will not only make people question everything they thought they knew about wolves, but it will also show one man’s struggle as he wrestles with the decision to use his unique bond with these animals against them.
