FLYING EAGLE No. 04 18 February 2015

From the Principal Student Leaders’ Elections continue This week elections for Student Council representatives from Years 4 to 6 have been the focus of student elections. Having to nominate, prepare and deliver an “election” speech is part of the process.

Our Library Monitors for 2015 have also been selected after completing an application for the position.

The Tec. Crew for 2015 are also sending their applications/completing training for their leadership positions.

Building leadership density amongst our students is something we believe has merit. It builds confidence and organisation skills. The roles challenge students to get along, develop persistence and resilience in the performance of their roles.

Student Leaders make great learners.

Student Leaders’ Induction

The Semester One Student Leaders’ Induction Ceremony will be conducted in the hall at 8.45am Thursday 5 March, 2015. All students will need to be at school on time for the first bell at 8.20am so we will be able to begin on time. We have some very special guests who will be joining us and all students from Year 3 to Year 6 will be attending. Space will be at a premium.

All students, Years 3 to 6, should be in full and complete school uniform. (Tartan shirt, white socks and black shoes). This is a formal school occasion.

Student Leaders presented with their badges of office that day include School Captains, Sports and Music Captains, Senior Leaders and Student Council representatives.

Library Monitors and Tec. Crew will receive their badges on 13 March at Friday Assembly at 8.35am.

Make Every Day Count in 2015 Make 2015 the year when your child doesn’t miss a day of school or arrive late for school. Research shows that students who have good patterns of attendance are more likely to achieve at school. If students aren’t at school or don’t attend the whole day, they are missing valuable learning.

Parent Network Thank you so very much to David and Michelle Pink who welcomed new and returning parents into their home last Friday evening. It was a really enjoyable night with lots of “networking” occurring for our P&C Association and its Parent Network.

Tenders for P&C Projects Close Today Today at 12noon tenders for our P&C projects closed. I will be working with WIM Architects, the P&C architects and school project managers, and DET representatives to select the successful tenders for

Construction of new tuckshop Modifications to pool entrance 3 outdoor play and learning spaces – 2 between A and B Blocks and the other, on the edge of the oval

We are all looking forward to these projects coming to fruition.

From the Deputy Principals

Last week we looked at the importance of choosing a positive attitude to school, learning and oneself as a learner. This week we are focusing on "Being Organised" as a Critical learning Behaviour. Why is being organised so important? There are two areas of organisation in which students gradually develop their skills.

The first is in physical organisation. Being prepared with everything I need to engage with the learning task. Time is lost and focus disappears when a child has to spend 5 minutes looking for their pencil, another five minutes getting it sharpened and then finding the right page in the right book ready to start. Some children are just starting when others are nearly finished. Frustrating for the child! Frustrating for the teacher! How do you model and scaffold the development of physical organisation skills at home? A wall planner or calendar for family activities, a specific place for important notices, a shopping list or a weekly menu, talking through plans of how to get everyone to the right place at the right time and what everyone's responsibility is to make this happen! All of these are organizational strategies which children can learn about and understand. The goal and plans can become more complex as your child matures. The second type of organisation is the organisation of thinking. Teachers teach these skills in all of the learning areas, by clearly defining a goal and setting out the steps for achieving the goal. Teachers model their thinking to students by talking aloud as they demonstrate a new concept. They scaffold students learning by ensuring that children's thinking skills develop in incremental steps, gradually releasing the responsibility to the child. They provide frameworks for thinking whether the task is writing a persuasive text, solving a mathematical problem or finding out something about our world. For some home ideas for young students the following link may be useful. http://www.essentialkids.com.au/younger-kids/kids-education/teaching-kids-to-get-organised-20090623-curp.html For older students try http://www.ccb.vic.edu.au/get_document.php?doc_id=20 Have a great week!

Chappy Jane sends her love and greetings from South Australia and wants to let you know that

she has been thinking of you all as you begin your new year at the wonderful EJ School.

From HOC & Master Teacher High Impact Teaching In line with our Improvement Agenda, our main area of focus this year is the consistent implementation of our Pedagogical Framework – Teaching and Learning the EJ Way, incorporating the use of High Impact Teaching. How will students understand what they are going to learn and know when they are successful?

When teachers consider this question, High Impact Teaching guides their instruction. In order to prepare students for learning, the second step in the High Impact Teaching Sequence is to unpack the learning intention (what students will learn in the lesson) and success criteria (how the students will know when they are successful in the lesson). ‘If learners are to take more responsibility for their own learning, then they need to know what they are going to learn, how they will recognise when they have succeeded and why they should learn it in the first place.’ (An Intro to AfL, Learning Unlimited, 2004) Teachers unpack the learning intention and success criteria by:

identifying the curriculum intent - what students will be learning

sharing the reason and purpose for learning, after activating students’ prior knowledge

presenting the learning intention and success criteria in language that students can understand

revisiting the learning intention throughout the activity/ lesson An example learning intention and success criteria could be:

Learning Intention: We are learning to think about the images we ‘see’ as we read

Success Criteria: We will be successful when we can:

- think about what we ‘see’ as we read each section of the text - tell our partner and teacher what we can ‘see’ after we have read each section of the text - find words in the text that helped us ‘see’ the character/event as we read and tell other students about them

Reading This year, we continue our focus on improving student achievement in reading. Word decoding strategies help students to decode, pronounce and understand words. Some strategies to assist students to decode words include:

Strategy Prompt

Connecting to a word you know Think of the word that looks like the unfamiliar word.

Reread the sentence Think about what word might make sense in the sentence. Try the word and see if the sentence makes sense.

Sports Report

Lunch Time Swim Clubs A select group of students have been invited to participate in a variety of swim clubs to be held during lunch times. If your child has been selected to participate then it is very important that students arrive on time to make the most of this opportunity.

Representative Swimming Eagle Junction sent 38 students to represent the school at the City District Swimming Carnival. All students competed well and gained valuable experience competing against other talented swimmers from local schools. From the carnival EJ had 10 students selected to represent City District at the upcoming Metropolitan North Championships to be held at Lawnton Swimming Pool on Wednesday 25

th February. Congratulations to Phoebe Bradley, Eva Formosa-Kerr, Freya

Caine, Lily Carrick, Ashleigh Pomeroy, Tomas Gregory, Ben Barter, Nicholas Jones, Lucas Hassall and Finlay Schuster on their selection in the City District Swimming Team.

Cross Country Students in Years 3-6 who are looking for cross country practice - there will be sessions held on the School oval from approximately 7:45am – 8:20am on a Tuesday and Thursday morning. All students wishing to participate must wait on the seats next to the oval until the teacher in charge (Mrs Vander Velde) arrives. Here is a suggested training program for students wishing to do extra practice at home. This thirty minute training session should be attempted three times during the week.

5min warm up / stretching

3min jog/1min walk repeated (aerobic / talk test)

5min warm down / stretching

HOW TO USE THE LOADING ZONE

Your passenger pickup zone / 2 minute zone

allows for the quick pick up of children during

congested peak school "let out" times.

THE CONCEPT

Vehicles move slowly along the loading zone

towards the front of the queue

Children see the vehicle and are ready to get in

The vehicle can be stationery for a maximum of

two minutes only

Motorists "give each other a fair go"

RESPECT THE TIMING

Do not stop for more than two (2) minutes

Do not park in the zone and walk away from

the car

PICKING UP AND LOADING BAGS

Plan your arrival time. - Does it have to be

before students are released from class?

Do you have older children? Could you ask

them to be ready and waiting 15 minutes after

school gets out?

You can get out of the vehicle only to assist the

children to load bags

If your child is not waiting please drive away

and return to the queue or park legally and walk

to collect them

Never double park to pick up children – it is

illegal and dangerous

www.roadsafety.qld.gov.au

1300 360 135

All children are expected to enter or leave a vehicle on the footpath side of the vehicle. Using the roadside door of a vehicle increases risks.

All parents not using the provided 2 minute zone are requested to respect the neighbours driveways. Parking in or across driveways of neighbours is not appropriate.

All parents walking children to and from school, even if parked outside the 2 minute zone should use the supervised crossings. Crossing behind or in front of parked vehicles makes visibility difficult.

Pick up your “Look Out Registration” form from the office.
