NEWSLETTER NO 30 2017 21 SEPTEMBER 2017

Memorial of St Vincent de Paul, Priest God our Father,

You blessed St Vincent de Paul with an apostolic zeal for those most in need of care.

Through his intercession, may we be filled with a desire to see the face of Christ. In whom we meet and spread the light of faith in a society

darkened by faithlessness. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord.

AMEN Dear Parents, How quickly another term passes and how dedicated the children have been towards their studies. I would like to congratulate Mr Waddell and all of the staff for their wonderful effort with the sports carnivals. We were fortunate to have good weather for both days. The way that the children strived to do their personal best and work collaboratively for the factions was a credit to all. Well done! The 20th Anniversary Mass and associated celebrations / Open Night / Art Show / Book Fair was another outstanding success. The day commenced with a very reverent and meaningful mass which was attended by a number of dignitaries including The Executive Director Of Catholic Education; Dr Tim McDonald, 5 out of the 6 current Directors of Catholic Education in Western Australia, Past Parish Priests of St Andrew’s Church, The two substantive Principals of the School, Mrs Margaret Sweetman the Foundation Principal and Mrs Eileen Climo. Nearly all of the Foundation staff of the school attended as well as local dignitaries, Past and Present School Board, P&F Executives and Members. It was wonderful to see a number of ex-staff attend this celebration as well and comment upon the growth and development of the school as a whole.

Companions on the Journey

After Mass, the school had a performance from the Police Piper which was followed by the cutting of the 20th Anniversary Cake. At the completion of lunch, the children and staff were treated to a performance by the Wadumbah Dance Group. In the evening we held our annual open afternoon including an inaugural art show in the hall which contained masterpieces from the children. There was a photo display showing the history of the school and memorabilia from the school’s time capsule which was due to be opened this year at the 20th anniversary. The evening also had all of the classrooms open for display as well as the annual Book Fair! Finally the winner of the P&F Colour Run T-shirt competition was also announced!

I wish to thank all of the families for attending this very important event. I would also like to acknowledge the work of the staff of the school who spent hours in preparation and co-ordination. It simply doesn't just happen but takes a lot of work. We are so blessed to have such a dedicated and hardworking staff here at St Andrew's. Maybe you could consider every so often telling them that?

A reminder that this Friday 22nd September is a Pupil Free Day. I hope that all families have a safe and wonderful holiday and we look forward to seeing you all on TUESDAY 10th October wearing your summer school uniforms. A Term 4 Planner accompanies this newsletter. Please place them in your diaries. (The dates are correct at the time of printing this newsletter.) If any unavoidable changes occur, we will advise families through the school newsletter. NAPLAN RESULTS Parents who have children in either Years 3 or 5 will receive their child's NAPLAN results today. They are sent home in conjunction with all other catholic schools within our region. I hope that you enjoy the read! NAPLAN – THE FUTURE Parents of younger students, within our school, should be aware that from 2017 an implementation period will be undertaken, whereby NAPLAN testing will be undertaken electronically. This is something new and challenging for all concerned.

STAFF CHANGE OF GRADES

At this time of the year many parents and children are interested in their teachers and what is happening for the following year. As yet there has been no formal decision as to which staff member will be teaching which grade in 2018. However, all teachers in schools are requested to change grades, every few years, as this is a part of their professionalism. In schools, like our own, this means that some children may have a teacher that they have had in previous years. This is unavoidable and most children look forward to the excitement of the new grade (so does the teacher). If any parent has any concerns, they are welcome to place this in writing with Mr Fontaine, next term.

ENJOY YOUR VACATION!

God Bless Mr. Sam Fontaine. Principal

VISION STATEMENT St Andrew’s CPS offers an education that acknowledges, respects

and nurtures the uniqueness of each person. Within a framework of Catholic values and teamwork,

the students will be challenged and supported to recognise their gifts and develop their potential as they learn and contribute to their community

The students enjoyed this extra treat on what was a fabulous day. CONSTITUTION Since the end of 2016, the funds belonging to the P & F Association now come under the banner of the Catholic Development Fund. These changes have made current sections of the St Andrew’s CPS P & F Association’s Constitution obsolete. The P & F Executive are taking this opportunity to perform a thorough review of the P & F Constitution. Copies of this draft document will be available in due course for community review and feedback, in order for it to be edited and ratified at the AGM in November. Further details will follow. COLOUR RUN COMPETITION Congratulations to our winners in the Colour Run competition. All entries were on display at the 20th Anniversary Art Show. We had so many wonderful entries that the judges had a hard time choosing one winner to go on to the t-shirt. The judges decided to have a selection of the winning artwork on the t-shirt, showcasing the people of St Andrew’s. They found many of the children had drawn their friends/classmates or teachers as being an important part of their life at St Andrew’s. Now the artwork is headed off to be designed into a t-shirt and printed ready for next term! In 2017, the JETS program (Joint Effort Team Success) has been running for students from Years Two to Six. The students have been engaged in a variety of learning experiences in each year level. Below is a snapshot of the activities they have been doing.

Students have created Board Games based on the theme of HEAT. They conducted research to formulate questions which were integrated into their individual games. Many students chose to make their own spinner, dice and playing pieces to play the games. They then played each other’s games and gave feedback on the success of each Game Board design, instructions and ease of play. Year 2 and 3 students designed and constructed a “House for a Mouse” using geometric shapes. The constraints included NOT using circles, squares or rectangles. They were required to explore the many different geometric shapes and select appropriate ones to create their own Mouse House.

In Semester One, Year 4’s wrote a short story for Pre-Primary aged students. They explored the features of short stories and read a variety of different stories. They then created a story board of their own ideas for a short story before creating an individual book. This activity culminated in reading their stories to small groups in the Pre-Primary classes. Both the JETS students and the Pre-Primary children enjoyed the experience.

First Term saw the JETS group researching Greek Gods as an extension of the work they were doing in class. Each student selected a Greek God, researched their position in Greek Mythology, their family tree and any special/individual abilities the God possessed. They then presented a speech to the group on their chosen Greek God whilst dressed in costume. Term 2 saw the students preparing for Tournament of Minds through creative thinking skills, and some Maths extension activities.

Year 6 JETS began the year with the excitement of constructing and learning to program our new Lego Robots. Learning to work together in small groups proved challenging at times, as did handling and piecing together the many small parts required to successfully construct the robots. The students also prepared for Tournament of Minds selection through creative thinking skills and team work activities. This term the students have begun a unit of work on Microscopic Environments where they will explore an area of 1m x 1m using a microscope attached to an i-Pad. Many different students have been involved in the various programs run through JETS this year as the dynamics of each group has changed, dependent on the learning area.
