A:

Q: Can I get a nitrogen dioxide sensor and carbon monoxide sensor as an “all in one” device?

Q: Does Kele have a BACnet repeater?

A: Yes we do. Check out the ADAM-4510 RS-422/RS-485 repeater.

While there are a few sensors out there that house both sensors in one enclosure we do not recommend

them. The reason we don’t is because the two gasses should be sensed at different heights. Nitrogen

dioxide sensors work best when installed 12" to 18" from the ceiling and carbon monoxide sensors work

best 36" to 60" from the floor.

CATALYTIC OXIDATION OR PELLISTORThese sensors are primarily using for sensing

combustibles, and are composed of two matched

sensing beads, one active and one passive.

With the addition of the combustible gas, the active

element catalyzes the oxidation of the gas and heats

up, changing the resistance. The passive element

does not change, so there is a change in the bridge

resistance. That resistance is then measured

and converted into an output proportional to the

concentration of gas detected. These very accurate

and reliable devices are incorporated into the

SPXCD by Honeywell Analytics.

OXYGEN SENSORSOxygen sensors are typically self-powered,

diffusion-limited, and have a metal-air battery.

The sensor consists of cathode, anode and

electrolyte. Oxygen presence within the cells

causes a current to flow between the anode

and cathode, and this can be measured with

a resistor across the circuit. The larger the

concentration of oxygen, the higher the current.

ELECTROCHEMICAL SENSORAn electrochemical sensor has a gaseous diffusion

barrier that limits the amount of gas reaching the

sensing electrode. Typically, there is a sensing

electrode, a reference electrode, a counter electrode

and an electrolyte reservoir. A current is created

between the electrodes when the gas reacts with

the sensing electrode. The current from the sensor

is proportional to the gas concentration. These gas-

specific sensors are found in the higher end toxic gas

sensors such as the 6300 Series and GDC150 from

Bacharach, as well as several other options found on

Kele.com.

NON-DISPERSIVE INFRARED (NDIR)This technology uses the principle that compounds

absorb light in the infrared band at unique

bandwidths. This type of sensor detects fairly inert

substances like refrigerants or CO2. The gas is

allowed to pass through a chamber with an infrared

lamp at the end. And infrared detector is at the other

end with a filter for the bandwidth of the gas being

sensed. As the concentration of the gas increases,

more of the infrared light is absorbed, and the

output is adjusted accordingly. Senseair's 045

eSense and 050 CO2 transmitter both offer this tech-

nology. Kele has a wide variety of CO2

sensors and transmitters.

SOLID-STATE SENSINGThe material in a solid state sensor is metal oxide.

It is heated to a high temperature. Oxygen is

absorbed on the surface, and a resistance is formed

to prevent current flow between the metal oxide

crystals. The resistance changes with the addition

of the target gas, and then, is measured. The

voltage and current that heat the sensor need to

be fairly constant for accurate results. Therefore,

circuitry is installed to monitor them. While these

are subject to react with many different gases,

they offer a low-cost, reliable solution for many

applications.

For assistance with any gas sensing product,

call Kele or go to www.kele.com. We have a

vast selection of products, and our technical

support staff is unmatched in the industry.

Gas sensing is an everyday part of

building control. For example, demand

controlled ventilation (DCV) requires

sensing carbon dioxide to approximate

building occupancy. Chillers require

refrigerant leak detectors, and a natural

gas-fired boiler should have a nearby

methane gas detector. Hydrogen sensors

are found above battery stations, and

ventilation in parking garages is controlled

by sensing carbon monoxide and

sometimes nitrogen dioxide. To control

outside air intake, try installing a volatile

organic compound (VOC) sensor. Use gas

sensors to detect oxygen depletion in

hospital MRI rooms, ammonia in food

processing areas, and a variety of toxic

gases found in industrial environments.

Not only are there many uses for gas

sensors, there are often choices for which

type of sensor to use. For example, in

refrigeration monitoring, solid-state and

non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) sensors are

available. These types differ in degree and

accuracy, price, and variety of enclosure.

The type, quality, and price range of a sensor

vary from application to application.

The following is a brief description of the

types of sensors used for gas sensing:

BACK to BASICS2TOTALIZED VALUES INSTANTANEOUS VALUESVS

Much of what is done by the system in Building Automation and Energy Management is simply measuring things.

The most common variables that are measured are instantaneous values. Temperature, relative humidity, pressure,

and toxic gas levels are typically monitored for their instantaneous value. Gallons of water and kilowatt hours are

common totalized values that are monitored.

One of the best, most common examples of this is in an automotive gauge cluster. Cars have a speedometer

and odometer. The speedometer indicates how fast the car is currently traveling. Displayed in miles per hour

(mph) or kilometers per hour (kph), the speedometer shows the instantaneous speed of the car. The odometer,

displayed in miles or kilometers, shows the totalized value representing how far the car has traveled.

Water flow applications are where these are often confused. When instantaneous flow, usually in gallons per

minute (gpm), is needed an analog signal (4-20 mA) is used. The flow transmitter outputs a signal that represents

how fast the water is moving at that exact moment in time. When totalized flow is needed, usually in gallons,

a digital signal is used. Each contact closure, or pulse, represents a number of gallons that have passed the flow meter.

A single phrase inserted into the body of the

specification may secure the project for one

bidder or eliminate another. Of course, in these

situations the chosen bidder probably helped

write the specifications, securing the job from

the get-go. "Specmanship" is an acquired

talent for many successful contractors, and

understanding the project applications is crucial

for job success and bid selection. There are

certain applications where having a clear bid

specification can make an enormous difference

in the outcome of the bid process, and the

following examples are just a few instances

where understanding the application can make

a big difference in bid choice!

Bid specifications are often critical in determining

the chosen contractor for many building automation

projects. In the past we’ve discussed the problems

encountered when differential pressure type flow

measurement devices are specified for use in

outside air ducts, and the bidder plans to use

a pitot tube, airflow station or velocity probe

device that is designed for supply or return duct

air flows. Its impossible for these products to

accurately measure air flow in what is typically

a low-velocity application; they are not designed

for it.

Short cuts, like tubing together multiple differential

pressure sensors simply will not work in a low-

velocity outside air intake application, even if

an industrial grade, high accuracy, expensive

differential pressure transmitter is used.

A "system" specifically designed for outside air

intake must be specified, bid, purchased, and

installed correctly to assure a successful outdoor

air flow control system. A signal processor

designed to measure air flow is required, and

other factors such as temperature compensa-

tion become important in accurately measuring

low velocity flow.

Proper "specmanship" is key in this application;

an outdoor airflow measurement system such

as the Kele KOAMS is the right solution from

start to finish. Check out the KOAMS Guide

Spec at www.kele.com.

Another misinterpreted specification that comes

to mind is one that requires RTDs, but excludes

thermistors. This specification typically states

a very high accuracy for the RTD; however, the

accuracy is stated as a percentage of resistance

(in ohms), not in degrees. When the accuracy

is converted to degrees, the temperature accuracy

becomes worse than the thermistor. For example,

a 1000ΩPlatinum RTD with an accuracy of 0.2%

is actually only ± 0.95°F.

The guaranteed accuracy of a Precon thermistor

is ± 0.36°F. While we are equally happy to

provide RTDs or thermistors, if a BAS system

is designed to operate with thermistors, why

force the contractor to use RTDs?

Although Kele can help you with writing detailed

specifications to make your jobs easier, "CYA"

notes are another story. This blanket statement

that makes the contractor liable for any design

mistakes or hidden problems has undoubtedly

caused lost sleep for many contractors. While

we cannot help with that, we can help with the

specifications you can control! We wish you good

luck as you work through the specifications for

your projects, and remember that Kele’s engineers

are always available to help you wrestle with

your jobs!

There are a number of different methods for

measuring a temperature change. Since we all

are in the temperature control business, let’s go

over some of the more common techniques and

explain a few pros and cons to each technology.

A resistance temperature sensor is the most

common in our industry. Specific names for these

types of sensors are Thermistors, and RTD’s. As

the temperature changes, the resistance of the

sensor changes.

THERMISTORS, like those from PreCon, are

made of high quality metal oxide ceramics in a

specific mixture to produce a specific resistance

response to temperature. They usually have a

negative temperature coefficient (temperature up...

resistance down) and are very repeatable, very

sensitive and accurate to ±0.36°F. The resistance

response is non-linear, so it can only be interpreted

by a computer. However, they are inexpensive

and lend themselves to a wide variety of HVAC

mounting applications.

These features make them ideal for building

automation applications. They typically measure

ranges from -30°F to 230°F.

RTDs are made of metal wire or thin metal film.

The amount and the type of metal give each

sensor a different response to temperature.

The most common RTD uses the precious metal

platinum. However, other less expensive metals

in use today are Nickel, and Nickel-iron. Twenty

years ago platinum RTD’s were manufactured

with platinum wire wound on a bobbin to the

desired resistance. The cost of platinum was

an issue, so platinum RTD’s were generally

limited to 100Ω for economic reasons. Today,

with thin film platinum, 1000Ω RTD’s are much

more desirable due to their higher sensitivity.

The cost of thin film is less than wire wound

because the metal is kept to a thin sliver of

platinum on a substrate to achieve the desired

resistance. All RTD’s have a positive temperature

coefficient (temperature up…resistance up) and

are very stable and accurate. They are more

expensive than thermistors but are ideal for

very low (-320°F) and intermediate temperature

(1000°F) measurement. Most applications will

require a transmitter to convert the resistance

to a 4-20 mA signal, but more and more BAS

manufacturers can take an RTD directly into

the field processor thus eliminating part of the

expense.

SOLID STATE or SILICON sensors are

basically temperature sensitive transistors or

diodes. When an excitation voltage is applied,

the solid state device regulates the microamp

current or sometimes a millivoltage through the

device according to the surrounding temperature.

Solid state devices are inexpensive and are used

by some automation companies. Solid state

sensors are very linear, but depending on the

model, have a fairly narrow operating range.

The general accuracy is a bit less than thermistors

or RTD’s, but is well within acceptable comfort

control limits for HVAC.

THERMOCOUPLES take advantage of a voltage

effect when dissimilar metals are connected

together. A thermally induced millivoltage is

generated at the junction of the dissimilar metals

and changes as the surrounding temperature

fluctuates. A transmitter measures the voltage

and generates a signal (4-20 mA or 0-5 V) for

a controller or meter. Thermocouples come in

many types of metal junctions to produce

different temperature responses. Thermocouples

are especially good at very high temperatures

(>1000°F) and are well suited for industrial

furnaces and process control. They are not very

linear or very accurate at room temperatures

so are not used in HVAC temperature control.

The comfort control of any building starts with

temperature. So regardless of which HVAC

temperature sensor you need, KELE has the

temperature sensor that will interface with your

system and application!
