It is always wonderful to see our Wheeler Hts students so positively and energetically involved in all the activities available at primary school. With so many events happening at schools each year it is always inevitable that clashes of dates will occur. School camps are usually booked 12 months in advance (with schools preferring a time which is suitable in terms of school commitments and weather conditions etc. Dates of district and regional carnivals are often not confirmed until early each year. Consequently a clash of dates for a small number of children will sometimes happen, and while this is certainly unfortunate, choices then need to be made. Father’s Day Breakfast What a lovely morning it was last Friday. To see so many dads and grandparents sharing a morning BBQ, playing handball, kicking a ball on the oval or just sitting talking together. The breakfast has become a tremendous addition to the school calendar. A special thank you to the amazing Year 4 helpers and fund raising extraordinaire Sherene who ensured the morning was a great success. School Skip-a-thon – please collect your sponsorship money now! Last week the school skip-a-thon was held. It was wonderful to see the entire school community, including parents, siblings, toddlers, grandfriends skipping together on the oval and surrounds. We hope that all students can now collect their sponsorship money so that we can raise funds for our school; technology upgrades, sustainability initiatives and the continued upgrade and improvement of our school playgrounds. Remember there will be fabulous prizes for the top fundraisers in each class and the best performing classes will win a special lunch! Enrolments for 2019 If you will be enrolling a sibling at Wheeler Hts PS in 2019, please see the office to add your child’s name to the database. Often families tend to overlook their younger sisters and brothers and we need to organise accurate enrolment numbers for next year. Similarly if you will not be returning to Wheeler Hts in 2019, please let us know asap. SASS Recognition Week This week is SASS Recognition Week. School Administration and Support staff play an important role in the school community; from bandaging knees, accepting payments, issuing receipts, providing information, greeting visitors and answering queries, the SASS team are an indispensable part of our school community. To help us truly appreciate the work of the SASS team we have asked naturalist Sir David Attenborough best known for his awe-inspiring BBC documentaries such as Planet Earth, and The Blue Planet for his thoughts…. “Seeing the SASS team in their own environment truly is a unique and enlightening experience. They move with such grace and purpose juggling a multitude of tasks at once. It’s like being mesmerised by a school of fish swimming gracefully in formation and moving in exquisite synchrony. Like members of the bear family the SASS team are fierce protectors of the young and like dolphins they have extensive memories. They also have the distinct gift of being able to seek and find lost items. Whilst some SASS are found inside, many also venture outside where they quickly adapt to any environment or task. There is much to learn from these exquisite creatures and like all of nature’s rare gifts it is important to treasure and appreciate the SASS team’s impact and contribution to our unique environment”. Head Lice It is that time of year once again when we see head lice reappearing at school. To eradicate head lice successfully can be a very difficult process and requires regular checking, washing, combing, rewashing etc. Some children are certainly more prone to attracting head lice than others. As always we ask that parents keep their children at home if any eggs or lice are found. End of Year Dates Please note the Term 4 dates which are on the school calendar on the previous page. These dates are being finalised and will regularly be updated if changes occur. David Scotter Principal

WHITE BALLOON DAY & NATIONAL CHILD PROTECTION WEEK

Tomorrow you may notice some white balloons around the school. This is because the school is supporting White Balloon Day as part of National Child Protection Week (2-8th September). White Balloon Day is Australia’s largest awareness campaign dedicated to preventing child sexual assault. Child safety is an important and regular component of all the school’s PDHPE programs. To support White Balloon Day and National Child Protection Week all teachers will discuss personal safety with students. Please also take the opportunity to talk to your children about child safety. Parents can access more information about child personal safety from the Bravehearts website: https://bravehearts.org.au/personalsafety Miss Earl

SRC Coordinator SUSTAINABILITY NEWS Last Thursday 30 August, Jules Bellamy from the Coastal Environment Centre hosted a follow up waste audit with Stage 2 to see how WHPS is progressing with our new systems in place. We found some really amazing results! Not only has WHPS reduced our waste from 53kg per day down to 23kg, but most of this is now not going into landfill! With all the new reusable canteen items and bins in place, we are sending less than one fifth of what we used to into landfill. A big congratulations to Sherene, Jules and the sustainability leaders for all their hard work with this project! We couldn’t have done it without you! Mrs Alexander Sustainability and ECO Coordinator

WHPS has halved our waste per day since

last year! We have also cut down what we send to landfill to one fifth!!

QUARANTINE STATION EXCURSION Last Thursday Year 1 and Year 2 students enjoyed a fantastic excursion to the Quarantine Station at North Head. Students are studying the history unit “Past in the Present” and this excursion was a great opportunity to visit a significant local site to discover how life has changed. Students rotated around five different activities to gain a better insight into life in the past. Students visited the hospital, the luggage steam room and a replica of the berths inside the SS Niagara. There was also time to dress up as students explored different artefacts from the past. The day ended with a climb up 234 steps. Whew!! Thank you to the many parents who assisted on the excursion. Miss Earl 1/2E Teacher

ZONE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

On Monday 3 September, 55 students from Wheeler Heights competed at the Zone Athletics Carnival held at Sydney Academy of Sport Narrabeen. Despite the rain and cool temperatures, it was a fantastic day of sportsmanship and impressive competition. Several students from Wheeler Heights placed in events receiving a ribbon on the day. Congratulations to the students who qualified to move on to the Sydney North Regional Athletics Carnival on Monday 17 September at Homebush. We look forward to hearing of your progress.

BALLROOM DANCING

It was fantastic to see our Year 5 students performing to their parents this Wednesday. The level of development has been incredible to witness and credit must go to our amazing coach Josh and the Year 5 teachers for the hard work and dedication that goes into the organisation and delivery of such a wonderful program. Some selected students will also be performing at The Dancesport Confidence Gala Event at Homebush on 10 September. We wish them the very best of luck and know that they will represent our school in the true Wheeler Way. If you have any questions about the event, please contact Mrs Sullivan or Mr Bennett.

BOOK WEEK Children’s Book Council Book Week Lunch with the Stars On Tuesday 4 September Ms Hammond and some 2018 Library Monitors attended the Children’s Book Council Book Week Lunch with the Stars. This special lunch was attended by 20 Authors and illustrators. We were lucky enough to listen to John Flanagan, author of the Ranger’s Apprentice adventure series. He shared his stories and journey of becoming a bestselling author. Serena Geddes, illustrator of Belinda Murrell’s Lulu Bell series, shared her skills and taught us all how to draw dragons. We were also privileged to have author Belinda Murrell sitting at our table. She is the author of many books including Lulu Bell series, The Sun Sword Trilogy and her time-slip books. All of us loved dressing up in this year’s Book Week theme, Find Your Treasure. We all walked away inspired! Mrs A Hammond Teacher/Librarian - Monday/Tuesday

The Annual Trivia Night is Coming Soon! Television Shows

Saturday November 10

Our biggest fundraiser for the school year is just around the corner and we need your help to make it amazing. This year the monies raised will be going to a variety of upgrades to the school grounds, new readers, iPads, Solar Panels and so much more.

What can you do to help you ask?

It’s great when our school community owned businesses get involved by either donating a prize or sponsoring a table. We like to offer our school families the first opportunity for sponsorship. However, if this isn’t possible all you need to do is think of someone you know who can donate something for the night – vouchers, gifts, services, in fact we can pretty much use anything to raise money to help make our school even better than it already is. If you own your own business or know of someone who does we are also offering “naming rights” for tables which, for a small fee ($200.00 tax deductible) is a great way of getting your business name out there. All businesses that make a contribution receive acknowledgement in the school newsletter, logo inclusion on the night’s slide show, mentions on the night and ability to distribute merchandise and business cards. Silent Auction prizes are another must for any fundraising event. Sporting memorabilia, hotels, trips, tours and pretty much anything with substantial value that will make the attendees spend up big on the night. There are plenty of very talented people in our school community and we would love it if you could turn your hand to making something for us to use at the silent or live auction or as a prop on the night. Please let us know. Last year we received a great response from our school community businesses and we’re sure we can do the same this year. If you have any questions or want to donate or help the committee please call Sherene LaGasse 0427 174472 or email [email protected]. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name ________________________________________Phone number_________________________________________ Donation____________________________________________________ Value____________________
