“ Reading is like riding a bike. You watch little ones beginning to ride a bike; they’re wobbly all over the place. But as we practise and practise, we don’t think about pedalling anymore. Eventually we can ride without no hands.” G. Reid Lyon
How does phonics
teach reading?“Learning to read is like learning a
code and the letters are the symbols for the
code. If you know what the symbols
mean you can crack the code.”
Decodable wordsTricky words
How do we teach it?
• Systematic programme- Letters and Sounds
• Reception on going all the time

• Reception- Start with one way to read and write each sound- simple code. ‘sound out’/’segment’
• Sound out and then blend to make words.
• When we know the sounds we are taught to read by blending. When mastered this we introduce the alternative versions of the same sound
• Phonics sessions are fun sessions involving lots of speaking, listening and games.
• Very important to sound out correctly.
Consolidating- sounding out & blending longer words

Golden River
/ee/, /e_e/, /ea/, /ey/, /y/ or /ie/alternative grapheme.
What can you do to help?
• Be aware that longer words should not be sounded out letter by letter.
• You should look at the sounds that are created by groups of letters.
• If phonetic approach is used by child don’t be overly critical
Praise your child for trying out words
• Let them apply their knowledge to read longer sentences and captions.
• Let them read and spell tricky words and increase their bank of words that phonics wont help them with
• Continue to play with magnetic letters using a range of combinations,
• eg: r-ai-n = rain blending for reading
rain = r-ai-n segmenting for spelling
Year 1 Phonic Check
• National Government initiative.
• First screening June 2012.• Statutory for all pupils at the
end of year 1.• 40 words to be read
individually with a teacher they know.
