  • Learn how to shoot a sunrise sequence, then combine all the frames in Photoshop with an Action to create heavenly skies

    CREATE INCREDIBLE T IME-STACK IMAGES

In this issues feature well show you how to shoot incredible time stacks. To do this we set

up a camera just as we would for a timelapse, so that it takes a series of shots at regular intervals.

Typically, a sequence like this would then be combined into a video, showing the rising sun in a matter of seconds. But rather than do the usual timelapse thing, were going to try something a little bit different. Taking inspiration from time-stack maestro Matt Molloy, well

combine the lightest parts of an entire sequence of images into one incredible frame. Its exactly the same method you would use to combine night-time star-trail images, but used on a sunset or sunrise instead, it produces a painterly effect that while unpredictable can result in incredible light-bursting skies.

Well show exactly which camera settings and kit you need to shoot for a time stack (the same shooting technique works for conventional timelapses too). Well then go on

to explain how to combine the sequence in Photoshop using the Lighten blending mode.

Combining hundreds of frames manually would be a real bore, so to speed things up well show you how to write your own Photoshop Action that automates the task. Weve supplied the finished Action among the project files, but knowing how to make your own custom Actions is a very useful skill any time you want to speed up monotonous tasks in the digital darkroom.

  • USE A TRIPOD AND MANUAL FOCUS

Set your camera on a sturdy tripod and make sure you dont nudge or move it once the interval shooting sequence

has begun. Focus on your subject, then switch the lens to manual focus to lock it in place. If youre shooting a sunrise or sunset, make sure youre in position and

    set up in good time.

    1ATTACH AN

INTERVALOMETERSome of the latest SLRs have built-in

intervalometers that enable you to set up a timelapse sequence. But for most cameras youll need a separate intervalometer, like the Hhnel Giga T

Pro II. Set the interval between shots to 5 secs or so, and let it fire continuously

    until you stop the sequence.

BREAK THE HORIZONWhen shooting any scene in which the

sunrise or sunset is the star, add interest to your composition by including a subject

that breaks the horizon, like the old diving board here. If youre stuck for a good location to try this technique, look for

bodies of water that will reflect the color in the clouds.

    2USE APERTURE

PRIORITYWhen shooting a timelapse of a

sequence like this, in which the light levels increase, use aperture-priority

mode. This way, the shutter speed will adjust as the sequence goes on, while

depth of field remains constant. Choose a narrow aperture for good depth of

    field we used f/11.

SHOOT AN EXTRA FRAMEWhen exposing for the sky in a scene like this, the land and foreground will be very

dark. To reveal detail in these parts of the scene, once youve finished shooting

the timelapse sequence of the movement in the sky, fire off one more shot at the end with exposure compensation set

    to about +2.

    3

EXPOSE FOR THE CLOUDSWhen shooting into the sun its best

to expose for the clouds, throwing the

the evaluative metering mode and position your focus point over the sky (in evaluative,

the metering is weighted around the focus point). You can also use exposure

but photographer Filippo Blengini may just have them all beat. And by a good country mile.

Sponsored by Canon, Filippo spent more than two weeks on Mount Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps. During his 15 days he shot some 70,000 images, which he and a team of photographers stitched together to make this enormous 365-billion-pixel panoramic image of the peak.

    MAKE A DIY MACRO LENS

A macro lens can be an expensive investment, especially seeing as its a specialist lens that you might

only use a few times a year. However, if you want the close-up experience, but you dont want the expense of buying a macro lens, its easy enough to create your own with a few household items and a standard prime lens. We used a

Nikon 50mm f/1.4. Please note that youll need to sacrifice a body cap for this project, but these are very cheap at about 8/$8. The key to the project is to flip the lens, putting the front element against the camera, then when you look through the viewfinder youll see everything much closer. Place a tube between the camera and the body and everything gets larger still.

n a previous tutorial we demonstrated how to use Lightrooms Adjustment Brush

to lighten or darken tones and reveal detail in under- or over-exposed parts of a picture. We also looked at how the Graduated Filter tool can selectively adjust tones with a gentle gradient. The Radial Filter tool behaves like a combination of the Adjustment Brush

and the Graduated Filter tool. Like the Adjustment Brush, the Radial Filter can make circular tonal adjustments, but you can also change its shape to edit elliptical areas too. And like the Graduated Filter, the Radial Filter gently blends its area of influence with unedited tones in the rest of the photo, which enables you to perform subtle and seamless tonal edits. The Radial

Filter is primarily designed to counteract vignetted edges, which is why it will lighten or darken areas outside any circle or ellipse you draw. In this tutorial we show you how to invert the default area of influence so that you can use the Radial Filter to quickly dodge or burn areas of an image, as well as how to to selectively add contrast to a subject to give it more impact.
