The fifty-year legacy of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning is apparent in both the tangible impacts on the built (and strategically unbuilt) environment of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and beyond and in the intangible but ultimately essential values that our faculty and staff bring to their work and instill in our students. I see this in the involvements and perspectives of our alumni. Values like Excellence. Social awareness and action through our professional endeavors. A sense of responsibility for the environment and the people who live and work there. These are the values that bind us together. And I am constantly proud to be part of SARUP. Let us celebrate our accomplishments and what we have yet to achieve. The need is great. The talent and determination are among us.

Under the leadership of Deans John Wade, Anthony Catanese, Carl Patton, and Bob Greenstreet, our faculty over the years has devoted countless hours to students and the community. They have established institutes and initiatives, conducted field schools and workshops, held conferences and colloquia…all while being fortified by Tea and Bikkies!

The School has been continually accredited by the NAAB and the PAB and recognized (and redesignated) as UW Center of Excellence by the Wisconsin Legislature. Our facul-ty, staff and students receive accolades on a regular basis, both within the UW system and in the fields of architecture and planning. Awards are fun! So we’ve been presenting the Marcus Prize since 2005 and the Urban Edge Award since 2006. In addition to this, we provide over $200,000 a year to students in the form of scholarships and prizes.

We look back with pride on the achievements of our alumni and faculty. With professional and academic achievement realized all over the world, and top awards in planning and architecture, the School has been represented at the high-est echelons of the fields. We can’t wait to see what the next 50 years bring!

SARUP HISTORY

Something happened in 1969, which would change the course of generations to come. In downtown Milwaukee, a SAR was born! After moving to Holton Hall in 1970, and then on to Engelmann Hall, we UP’ed our game in 1974. Eight years later, the PhD program was added. We believe in change, and so in 2017, we added an M.S. in Architecture, as well as an online minor.

It was in 1994 that we found our permanent home on 2131 E. Hartford Avenue, with a building that has been used by thousands of students (including pre-schoolers who have an exciting egg-drop contest in the exterior stairwell every spring).

The School has had a tremendous partner and ally almost all its life. In 1971, the Design People’s Coop was begun, going through a brief period as the Third Coast Design Cooperative before changing its name to Third Coast Design Centre, Inc.
