KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
Kevin Johnson
Kevin Johnson is Senior Advisor for Economic Development at Invest Atlanta. In that role, he develops and implements strategies to drive economic growth and development; supporting relationships with civic, business, governmental and economic development stakeholder constituents. The results have been stunning – over the last 10 years, Kevin’s actions have assisted in the creation of nearly $10.4 Billion in capital investment and 14,000 new jobs.
Kevin served on the board of directors of the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) from 2005 – 2010. He also has served on the boards of the Council for Entrepreneurial Development, and the Fiesta Bowl Committee to name a few. He frequently lectures at a number of professional conferences and teaches at professional development courses at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Georgia Institute of Technology. Kevin has a bachelor’s degree in Political Science/Pre-Law from South Carolina State University and earned his Certified Economic Developer designation (CEcD) from IEDC in 1996. He has received numerous professional and community awards. Kevin has been working at Invest Atlanta since January 2012.
Invest Atlanta is the official economic development authority for the City of Atlanta. Its purpose is to strengthen Atlanta’s economy and global competitiveness in order to create increased opportunity and prosperity for the people of Atlanta. Invest Atlanta is governed by a 9 member board of directors, chaired by the Mayor of Atlanta.
Invest Atlanta’s programs and initiatives focus on developing and fostering public-private partnerships to accelerate job creation/economic growth, neighborhood revitalization/investment and innovation/entrepreneurship. Invest Atlanta’s economic tools include bond financing, revolving loan funds, housing financing, tax increment financing and tax credits.
Session Description: As the official economic development arm for the City of Atlanta, Invest Atlanta is involved in every aspect of our economic growth from business development and affordable housing to redevelopment and transformative city initiatives such as the Atlanta BeltLine. It is an exciting time to live and work in Atlanta, which has a renewed focus on customer service, safety and workforce development, all of which benefit facility managers.

Ryan Gravel
Ryan Gravel is a senior urban designer at Perkins+Will in Atlanta, where he brings an architect’s perspective to urban planning, concept development and public policy. His master’s thesis in 1999 was the original vision for the ambitious Atlanta BeltLine – a 22-mile transit greenway that transforms a loop of old railroads with light-rail transit, parks and trails to generate economic growth and protect quality-of-life in 45 neighborhoods throughout the central city. Six years of his subsequent work as a volunteer and later in the nonprofit and government sectors was critical to the BeltLine’s success, which is now a $2+ billion public-private initiative in the early stages of implementation.
Perkins+Will is currently leading the Atlanta BeltLine Corridor Design which will set a design framework for the project’s physical implementation, as well as the Atlanta BeltLine Implementation Plan, a financial framework that will guide funding strategies for the project over the next 20 years.
In addition to his professional work on the Atlanta BeltLine, Ryan is also a member of the Atlanta BeltLine Partnership Board of Directors and speaks internationally about the BeltLine. He was named a “Visionary Bureaucrat” by Streetsblog in 2012 and one of the “Top 25 Newsmakers” of 2011 by Engineering News-Record. He received an “Emerging Voices” citation in 2011 from the AIA-Atlanta Young Architects Forum and was been named one of Esquire Magazine’s “Best and Brightest” in 2006.
Session Description: Don’t Hold Your Breath. The Atlanta Beltline and the Future of Our Metropolis.
Imagine if we could build places where we actually want to live as effortlessly as we build maddening traffic and urban sprawl today. Are we doomed to be stuck in suffocating traffic? Don’t hold your breath. The Atlanta Beltline offers reasons for hope and a path forward to more comprehensive changes in the way that metropolitan Atlanta grows. Reporting on the Atlanta Beltline’s progress and other catalyst projects around the country, Gravel will argue that as we begin to solve the problems we have created, we are given a unique opportunity to re-shape our communities into a metropolis where we all would want to live.

Overview of Mobile Technologies and Applications in the Workplace

Mobile technologies are now common place and most people are familiar with them and comfortable using them. However, there are various different options available and without a strong grounding in the basic technologies and an understanding of the different applications it is difficult to pick the best one for your organization.
This presentation will present a list of easy to understand yet critical mobile technology fundamentals required to make decisions as to which mobile technologies to choose and when to choose them.
We will focus on 2 key areas of mobile technology: 1) the different technologies available, CDMA, GSM, LTE, WiMAX, WiFi, 3G/4G, etc., who provides them, and the pros and cons of each technology and 2) An overview of the different applications and how to evaluate those applications.
The fundamental focus of this presentation is “What’s Actionable.” If you have a clear idea of what you are trying to accomplish you can filter out all the noise and focus more clearly on the specific information that will help you achieve the goal and ignore the rest.

We live in an era in which office design is completely dominated by the world view of the Baby Boomer generation. Their perspective is so dominant in the workplace that its influence has become almost invisible. However, by 2020 Generation Y will comprise over 50% of the workforce. To properly support, attract and retain Gen Y workers, companies will have to provide work-spaces and facility programs that align with their needs and preferences.

This presentation will provide an overview of what goes into the creation of a building energy model and discuss how energy modeling can be incorporated into the design process as a tool for improving energy performance of buildings, as well as the role energy modeling plays in the LEED Certification process. The presentation will include step-by-step methodologies for improving the energy performance of new construction and renovation projects.

Patrick Browne serves as Corporate Sustainability Program Manager for UPS, a global leader in logistics, offering a broad range of solutions including the transportation of packages and freight. Patrick joined UPS 24 years ago and has held various assignments throughout the company. His previous assignment leading up to his current position was Corporate Environmental Affairs Program Manager. He is responsible for managing various sustainability initiatives and strategies, working with cross-functional teams from various business units within the company. He has been responsible for calculating and reporting UPS’s global GHG inventory and reductions since 2007.
Kevin Butler is a Certified Professional Ergonomist. Kevin holds both a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Industrial Engineering from Arizona State University and The Ohio State University, respectively. As Senior Ergonomist at Steelcase, Kevin spends much of his time collaborating, benchmarking, and best-practice sharing with organizations on their ergonomic and wellness program efforts.
Dagmar Epsten is the founder and president of Epsten Group, a global leader in designing and consulting for high-performance buildings. She was the first LEED Fellow in Georgia and is also Georgia’s first LEED Accredited Professional to achieve all five specialties offered by the GBCI. Ms. Epsten is a pioneer in sustainable design and in offering services that optimize building performance. Ms. Epsten is a registered architect, a registered interior designer, a Certified Commissioning Authority and a Certified Construction Specifier. She obtained a Master in Architecture degree from Georgia Institute of Technology and a Diploma Engineering degree in architecture from Karlsruhe University, Germany. Ms. Epsten has 27 years of professional experience, including 22 as founder and principal of the architecture and consulting firm Epsten Group, Inc. Her firm’s focus on comprehensive, high-performance design solutions derives from her background in architecture, energy engineering, building envelope science, daylighting, indoor air quality, construction specifications, planning, landscape design and interiors.
Joseph Geierman, CFM, FMP is facilities and office services manager at Troutman Sanders LLP, serving in that position since 2009. Prior to joining the law firm, he worked for 10 years at EarthLink, where he held various facilities-related positions. He graduated with highest honors from the University of California at Santa Cruz and holds a master’s degree in building construction and facility management from Georgia Institute of Technology. He serves the Atlanta Chapter of IFMA as the incoming vice president of communication and serves on the IFMA Legal Facilities Council as treasurer. He also founded and informally chairs a local networking group of facility managers working at large law firms. Geierman has earned IFMA’s Certified Facility Manager and Facility Management Professional designations. He has been recognized by his peers in the Atlanta Chapter of IFMA with the Martha C. Osborne CFM award.

Craig Goldstein is a LEED Specialist and Project Engineer at Epsten Group. He has eight years of experience in HVAC design, including retrofit design, and in services for improving energy efficiency. As a design engineer, his experience covers a variety of industries including office, retail, supermarket, school, hospitality, government and aviation projects. Mr. Goldstein is directly responsible for energy modeling, calculations and documentation required for LEED certification, as well as, Energy Star assessments, and LEED certification reviews for mechanical related credits and prerequisites.Mr. Goldstein is a certified Professional Engineer, a LEED Accredited Professional and a Certified Energy Manager. Mr. Goldstein has a Bachelor’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology
in Atlanta, Georgia.
Ira Gorelick is a career educator and telecommunications professional. As a Director for G4 Green Connections, an educational consulting firm that provides green solutions through education and networking, Ira develops customized curriculum for his clients’ training needs. Ira has worked in the telecommunications industry for thirty-one years, primarily with GTE and Verizon Wireless. His telecommunications industry expertise includes wireless data, intelligent network planning, fraud prevention and strategy, product management, and training.
Ira holds an MA degree in Communications Management from the University of Southern California Annenberg School of Communications and Journalism, and a BA degree in Communications Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles.
Bruce Holmes is the Chief of Police, Director Safety & Security for the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. Prior to this position, Bruce Holmes was the Director of Public Safety for Clayton State University for 12 years and has over 24 years combined law enforcement experience in the municipal and higher education environment. Chief Holmes is a certified law enforcement officer, police instructor, firearms instructor and holds an Executive Law Enforcement Manager certification.
Chief Holmes holds a Master of Public Administration-Criminal Justice Administration degree from Columbus State University, and is a graduate of Georgia Law Enforcement Command College. Chief Holmes is Board Certified in University Crisis Response (B.C.U.C.R.) by the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress.
Shannon Karasiewicz, FMA started her FM career at Turner Properties in Atlanta, Georgia in 1996. During her tenure at Turner, she managed an array of facility types totaling 1M+ square feet. Since 2005, she has been the Senior Manager of Corporate Services at EarthLink where she is responsible for corporate security, safety, travel, office solutions and partners with Facilities on customer support on approximately 112 sites. Shannon holds an FMA designation from BOMI and a Safety & Health Management certification from Georgia Tech Professional Learning. She is also a candidate for the CPP Security designation from ASIS.

Barbara Miller is the Facilities Manager for AkzoNobel Coatings, Inc. in Norcross GA, since 1991. AkzoNobel Coatings, Inc. is the world’s largest coatings manufacturer –specifically coatings and paint for automobiles, boats, bridges, wood, metal, plastics, etc.
She handles facility management and travel management for the America’s headquarters office in Norcross and training centers in US and CA and had managed the real estate portfolio of 44 sites in US and Canada prior to a divestiture in June 2011. She experienced a major fire at the Norcross HQ in March 2011 and subsequent relocation 5 wks later to a temporary office space for 100 employees. She was previously a commercial real estate broker in Atlanta prior to joining AkzoNobel. Through the influence of IFMA, she completed her Masters degree in Integrated Facilities Management from Georgia Tech in Dec 2005 and gained the FMP designation in 2006. She has been a member of IFMA since 1995 and has been actively involved in IFMA’s Community Service committee since 2001.
Barry Reid has a B.A. from the University of Oregon, College of Business Administration. He has 22 years’ experience in the Building Products industry. He is currently Sustainability Manager for Georgia-Pacific LLC Building Products where he serves as Subject Matter Expert on green building codes, standards, and programs. He works with product development and management teams integrating sustainable and building science principles into Georgia-Pacific products and processes. His current green building activities include being a member of the Gypsum Association’s Ad-Hoc Committee on Sustainability and the chair of the American Wood Council’s Green Building-Codes and Standards Technical sub-committee
Kylie Roth has extensive workplace experience with a broad range of clients and market types. With a background in design and in-depth knowledge of today’s workforce and workplace research, Kylie focuses on developing work environment strategies that best support client’s needs. In her role, she leads clients through a planning and design process, connecting their organizational culture, business objectives and project criteria into appropriate planning and product solutions.
Prior to joining Knoll in 2010, Kylie worked as a Senior Interior Designer for HOK St. Louis. In her position there she worked with top-tier clients in all fields, caring out full-scope responsibilities associated with all aspects of design, including planning, programming, product selection, branding and construction. Kylie earned a B.F.A. in Interior Design and a B.F.A. in Graphic Design from Maryville University. Kylie is a LEED accredited professional and member of CoreNet Global.

Derek Rusch has over 11 years of experience in business development and marketing communications strategy with extensive sales and graphic design background in the commercial real estate industry. He received his MA at American University in DC in 2000 and gained 9 years of experience in the Chicago market with a Haworth dealer (Kayhan International), Powell/Kleinschmidt and the Real Estate Communications Group where his focus was primarily on the real estate industry. Prior to joining Teknion in December 2011, Derek spent working with a Steelcase and Knoll dealership in the Atlanta market. He was chair of IFMA AWP in 2011, co-chair of the IFMA Foundation Gala for WWP from 2007 – 2010 and contributor to graphics and marketing for the IFMA Foundation White Papers . He was honored in 2010 to be the Outstanding Recipient Award from IFMA Foundation at IFMA World Workplace in Atlanta for his dedication and hard work. He currently is the A&D Market Manager of Teknion and is certified as one of IDCEC educators for Teknion’s CEU’s.
David Sims is a facilities professional with extensive experience in operations, construction, renovation and emergency planning, beginning his career as Director of Physical Plant at Tift College of Mercer University in 1986. Since 1997 he has held the position of Director of Plant Operations at Macon State College, and was recently named Assistant Vice President for Facilities at Middle Georgia State College (the consolidated institution of Macon State College and Middle Georgia College).
Under David’s leadership, Macon State College established ALERT (Agency and Law Enforcement Resource Team), which brought state and local resources together for planning, table top and functional exercises. The relationships developed through this planning process proved invaluable when a tornado struck the College on May 11, 2008.
David has served as a board member for APPA and SRAPPA as well as serving as President of GAPPA. He has received the President’s Award from SRAPPA and GAPPA, and is a past recipient of the Outstanding Service Award from the Board of Regents. He currently serves as a Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful Commissioner and a member of the Waddell Barnes Botanical Gardens Executive Committee.
Dan Walther is a facilities operations manager for CompuCREDIT, with FM responsibilities at the corporate site, in the perimeter area and other remote offices. Outside of his work responsibilities, he served as treasurer for the IFMA Atlanta Chapter (2011-2012), as the education committee chair for the two prior years and as the career management committee chair (2007-2009). With more than 15 years in the facility management industry, Walther has managed various teams to deliver FM services and has presented research and recommendations to upper management. From 1980–1989, he worked at Xerox in Oakbrook, Ill.; and in 1986 he received his diploma from DeVry Institute of Technology in Lombard, Ill.
