Hello BCYCers!

Hey, it’s my last crack at writing something for you guys as com-modore. It was an interesting year in 2018. We got a lot done with some key people making big contributions. We have a new deck that took a couple years to come together. We have an updated clubhouse and we’ve made a year’s worth of memo-ries from great dinners to great races to great destinations in the monthly cruises and full moon sailouts. There are a lot more changes coming down the road and I’m excited at the prospect of what we can accomplish.

I do want to take a moment to thank Jonathan Cornwell in what he has created out of the pieces that we had laying around of what a Public Relations chair had or could be. He’s not only tied a lot of advertising spaces together to cross-advertise events in other areas but he’s created a nearly live presence in social media that he’s more than happy to maintain. This has been a lot of work and a job very few would consider, much less be happy to build into something so big. I’m in awe of how quickly and enthusiastically he’s taken it on.

I also want everyone from Lee Nell to Michael Richardson to know that your contributions to what you do for the club does not go unnoticed. I only have so many lines and I can’t pick ev-eryone out. Besides, I’d probably miss one of the most important people and die in agony for it. Suffice it to say, our club runs on the backs of a lot of volunteers. My ask of the rest of us is to take a moment the next time you’re at the club to thank a volunteer. I have it on good authority a cold drink is a good way to say thanks as well.

I also wanted to point out how pleased I was to be able to give the Gulfport Historical Society a donation toward catastrophic emergency contingencies after their fire and appreciate every-one kicking in toward the Hurricane Michael Relief Fund Raiser. The initial goal of raising $2,500 was met a few days before the concert and exceeded by a wide margin after the concert. BCYC and the Carrabelle Boat Club have now raised over $5,700! Also, to this end I’d like to mention how much we appreciate Nancy May-Hatch for her being a liaison with Carrabelle Yacht Club and helping set up the method of donations to support the cause and much, much more.

FOR SALE: ECLIPSE: 27.5' Chrysler S-27 $3,000 obo

This is a racing boat, built in 1980, originally Morgan designed. Chrysler improved on the design to make it a bal-anced performance racing sailboat! The bottom has been planed to eliminate cavitation. Non-spin class 1st place legacy with SPSA, SPYC and Morgan Invasion. They call it the "cheater boat" because it always wins (documented). ECLIPSE has a Tampa Bay-wide reputation.

I purchased the boat in March for $6000. The only time I've had it out was to move it to the club (it's in slip #20). The issue is the engine worked on the way to the club (but it was spitting out black smoke). It hasn't started since. So it needs engine work (it's a Yanmar diesel). Unfortunately my situation has changed and I won't be able to sail for the next couple of years more than likely. I've made the decision to sell the boat for half of what I bought it for due to the engine issues (or best offer). Contact Chris Tucker at [email protected].

Proposed Standards of the BCYC Community

Submitted by Richard Walters, Historian

Member suggestions from the first publication of the proposed standards in the November Windword have been taken into account. The following is to be voted on by the general membership in January and included in the printed 2019 Directory. The Standards of the BCYC Community is referenced in the current Bylaws but the written Standards will not be part of the Bylaws. If anyone has comments, please contact me now, not at the meeting!

Standards of the BCYC Community

Personal Accountability

Be honest and strive to maintain an attitude that is respectful, kind, friendly, helpful, and considerate. We respect others' opinions and are open to their perspec-tives. We are humble and do good deeds in anonymity. Positive actions of others are recognized publicly while criticisms are constructive and made in private. We speak to one another in a manner that permits growth and understanding.

Promote Camaraderie

Promote an active and growing membership. New members are made to feel comfortable and appreci-ated. We make an effort to get to know their names and interests. We help them find ways to get involved. We encourage development of their boating skills and offer assistance whenever needed. We respect and look out for one another's property. We are honest in any busi-ness dealings with fellow members.

Club Spirit and Responsibilities

Recognize that the club is only as strong as its members who volunteer to maintain it, and pitch in whenever possible. We speak of the club in a way that is support-ive and promotes growth in the community. We are careful not to appear to represent the club to outside organizations without specific Board approval and direction. We elect the Board to govern the club and attend Board meetings if we want to be part of this pro-cess. Ultimately we are all responsible to maintain the club’s objectives.

My congratulations to Nick Southard and his new officers and board members. I have been working with Nick quite a lot in December and am excited about some of the new energy he brings to the leadership. I look forward to a great 2019 with them and will be along to offer whatever help they may need.

Last thoughts… Be kind to your fellow members. Properly set those dock lines on the dock and push out into the wind at every chance. Don’t run over the kayakers or paddle boarders on the way. Live in the moment and soak up the joy life has to offer.

Finally, if feeling the wind heel the boat and ac-celerating toward the horizon doesn’t make your heart soar, you’re doing something wrong.

Larry Brown Who 2019

A Day in the Life of an Interclub Sailor (Ho,Ho,Ho)Submitted by Barb Meyer

The FWSA interclub hosted by the Salty Sisters was coming up fast and all the weather predictions for December 11th sounded bleak. Easterly wind and 66 degree water with chop created the potential for cap-sizing. After phone calls and a meeting it was decided by the group not to abandon the races but make a new plan. Salty Sister interclub chair Cam Kilgroe made a compelling plea: while the Sunfish would not be rac-ing, Prams would compete in the Sailing Center basin. Please come out and give it a try. After all "we have plenty of prams." Food tends to rule many decisions in my life, so how could I miss out on the lunch buffet and a holiday tour at SPYC? With visions of yummy deserts dancing in my head, I said "Oh sure, why not?" I'd man-age to get my butt in a pram somehow.

Race day came and I was feeling pretty good. After all, I had just a 5 minute drive to the Center compared to 45 minutes in heavy traffic for Windlass racing, or 20 minutes to the Rhumb Runners' home venue and deal with the problem du jour.

When what to my wondering eyes did appear but a dock full of prams that looked so small I really feared!

My teammate Suzanne Boohar assured me this was go-ing to be fun, but that was only after we discussed how our knees pop out when we tack. Really?

The Salty Sisters gave us a warm welcome and then showed us the courses. The Christmas Tree race was first, followed by the Candy Cane run. To make things more interesting there were no rules except all marks were to be passed to port.

Off I went down the floating dock looking for an es-cape. With no chimney in sight, the only way out was on the water. Suzanne helped me tumble into boat 11

and get positioned the best I could. With no reindeer to help, it was three, two, one, start! I will say I had two very good starts that day, but that was it. I realized quickly that this Ms Santa was no match for all those isty bitsy teeny weenie little pixie elves flying past me.

First was the Christmas Tree race. The first mark was a Christmas tree, complete with ornaments, on a float. You had to sail by and grab an ornament using only your left hand, go to the second mark, then return to the tree and replace the precious prize before heading to the finish line. Why was it precious? Remember–no rules. You had to fight for a strategic position to reach out and take the bright red globe. There was bumping and pushing and sculling and paddles and going into irons and laughing too.

On to the Candy Cane Run. The marks were boats where crew members held out bags of candy canes. You reached in using your left hand only touching nothing else. Remember the bumping and pushing? At the second boat I thought I was in perfect posi-tion, reached out and then BUMP causing me to reach forward with my right hand to steady myself. The crew immediately snatched the bag away from me. I don't remember what kind of look I gave her, but that bag came back as fast as it had left. I grabbed a fistful and off I went for the final mark only to get pushed into irons. Where was my sleigh full of wind?

Back on shore and in warm dry clothes we engaged in one final game before heading to lunch. Your team-mate was adorned with inflatable antlers while you attempted to toss rings at them.

There seemed to be just a little cheating going on…

As predicted, the club decorations were enchanting, the luncheon delicious, and the camaraderie unsur-passed. I had a marvelous time and would not have

Rhumb Runners January ReportSubmitted by Barb Meyer, RR Captain

Happy New Year and wishing peace to all sentient be-ings. The RR's are still here and getting ready for the second part of the sailing season. We are also excited about being part of the BCYC racing tribe, thank you Club Racing Chair Garth Reynolds!

To finish off 2018 we got together for dinner at 400 Beach Drive (and a little drinkee). I highly recommend the happy hour there. Afterwards Lisa Glaser lead us through North Straub Park where the city Christmas tree is. We discovered that Santa was visiting, well, that meant a picture. We all managed to squeeze in and Santa stood up to accommodate the group. We head-ed back through the park and up to the Canopy for a night cap. If you haven't been there you are missing out on the most beautiful skyline view of the down-town waterfront.

Earlier in the week Susan Boohar and I attended an interclub at the St. Pete Sailing Center. (See previous article for details.)

This is a reminder and was covered in the December article; Sunday January 13th, 2019 starts our Winter se-ries, the second race day on the 27th will be for Capri's only. The following day will be our first time hosting

a FWSA interclub and expect to have plenty of Sunfish racers attending.

The next FWSA general meeting is January 16th and will be held at the Tampa Yacht Club hosted by the Mainsheet Mamas. Several of us will be attending.

Joye Swisher is working on rescheduling the program by Ann Weaver, Ph.D. Secrets behind the Dolphin Smile, 25 Amazing Things that Dolphins Do. (TBA, we hope February 15th.)

Sail fast, live slow, and never be afraid to get your butt wet!

missed a mo-ment of the day. But I have no intention of ever shoehorn-ing myself into a pram again anytime soon. BTW I got a last place award!

Report from the Carrabelle Boat Club, Mexico Beach, Port St JoeSubmitted by Jonathan Cornwell, photos by Susan McQuillan

(Note: Stay tuned for an in-depth story next month from Nancy May-Hatch)

Saturday, December 15, was the date of the We Stand Together Get Down benefit concert for Hurricane Michael relief in the Florida Panhandle. The initial goal of raising $2,500 was met a few days before the concert and exceeded by a wide margin after the concert. BCYC and the Carrabelle Boat Club have now raised over $5,700! Congratulations and thank you to CBC for your hard work!

As you can see from the photographs at right, there is still a great deal of work to be done. Lee Nell is organizing a trip in January to work for volunteers from BCYC to work on site in the Panhandle. Keep an eye out for news as this project develops.

You still strongly encouraged to make donations directly at the Samaritan's Purse website at https://fundraise.samaritanspurse.org/fundraiser/1783493.
