What’s New? The 2017 Monarch Monitoring season kicks off this month. Volunteers will help survey milkweed for all the stages of a Monarch buerfly’s life cycle. We cannot express how thankful we are to have such wonderful people in our community who take me to help teach kids about birds, bugs, water quality, and animal tracks! Many thanks to Jodi, Steve, Jon, Bob, Michael, Cathy S., Cathy E., Nicole, Cindy, Linda, KC, Ron, Pat, Doug, Barb, Carolyn, Sophia, Josiah, Karen, Amanda, Andrea, and Jan for being phenomenal educators this year! We definitely couldn't have taught all those hundreds of students without your help. Around the Water Cooler Mia, one of our Environmental Educators, is switching from field trip to summer day camp mode. This quick change in gears requires research and planning, but our enthusiasc educator remains in good spirits, “I’m excited for our day camps. They are a lot of fun!” Make sure your kiddos are signed up for one of our free camps this summer. Slots are filling up fast! (And...we’re sll looking for a few good day camp volunteers!) Don’t-miss Volunteer Opportunities!

Think you might not have the skills needed

to help? Don’t worry! Training is provided.

Summer Day Camp Helpers—June 26-30

and July 10-14, 8:30AM-1:00pm. Training time

TBA. Help our Environmental Educators run

one of our summer day camps for kids!

Volunteers needed to help co-lead activities,

chaperone students, and photograph the fun.

Maintenance Crew/Weed Warriors—

Flexible, ongoing opportunities from spring to

fall. Help improve wildlife habitat by battling

invasive weeds and completing other refuge

maintenance projects. Seeking volunteer

groups as well as individuals.

Monarch Monitoring —Monitoring times

flexible. Monarch butterfly populations have

declined drastically. Participate in citizen

science by monitoring a milkweed patch on the

Refuge for monarch eggs, caterpillars, and

adults. Will provide training.

Other Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities

Summer Field Trip—July 21, 9AM-Noon. Our

Environmental Educators could use an extra hand

with one of our summer field trips. Volunteers

needed to help lead or co-lead a station. Contact

us for more information.

Visitor Counting Surveyor—2 hours in the

morning (8a -noon), 6 times per month (4

weekdays and 2 weekends). Fill brochure boxes

and count Refuge visitors by driving around the

lake in a Refuge vehicle. Data is used to estimate

total Refuge visitation.

Visitor Center Landscaping—Ongoing, flexible

times. Help keep the wildlife-friendly Visitor

Center landscaping looking pretty for visitors.

Spring weeds have gotten away from us, so we

really need your help now!

Upcoming Events Unless otherwise stated, events

take place at the Visitor Center.

Kids Fishing Day—June 10, 10

am– 3pm. Join us at Gotts Point

to celebrate a free day of

fishing! Visit our fun activity

stations, create a craft, and

learn how to cast at our family-

friendly event.

Reading at the Refuge—June 19

and July 3 10a and 2p. Preschoolers

are invited to a wildlife-focused story

time. Create a craft and explore

around the Visitor Center!

Biodiversity Basics Day

Camp—June 26-30, 9am– 12:30pm.

Explore the incredible variety of life

in the world! Kids going into 4th &

5th grade hike through habitats,

create field guides, and find out

what it’s like to be biologists! Free!

Space is limited so register early.

Deadline June 12!

Desert Detectives Critter

Camp—July 10-14, 9am– 12:30pm.

Kids going into 2nd and 3rd grade

come to discover how plants,

animals, and people survive in the

desert of southwest Idaho. Free!

Register by June 26.

DVDs! We use them in our environmental educa-

tion programs.
