It’s More Than a Mug Shot

A portrait:Captures the personality or essence of a subject. Not just a picture with a person in it. A "clinical" portrait might not attempt to reveal the soul of a person, but it still needs to capture something of that person's uniqueness — or else it's not a portrait.

Is staged. While portraits can be candid, even those tend to have some intentionality. The lighting, backdrops, and poses are important.

Portrait Photography Tips

1. Use soft, diffused lighting—such as cloudy-day lighting or indirect window light—to reveal your subject's features in a flattering way.

2. Keep the background simple to avoid distracting elements, but make it relevant to the portrayal of your subject. There are two elements to a photo studio for portrait photography. One is a controlled background. You want to focus attention on your subject and avoid distracting elements in the frame.

3. Move in close for an above-the-waist or head-and-shoulders composition; for a less traditional approach, move back to show the entire figure.

4. Position your camera at or slightly below your subject's eye level.

5. Pay particular attention to the position of hands and the angle of the head. In a portrait, hands and head can easily look awkward.
