News from the Town Council

The Town Council is delighted to welcome two new councillors who joined us recently. Jacqui and Julie are featured on p.6 of this newsletter. Both bring important new skills and talents to help us in our work and they will be fabulous assets to the Council. At the same time, we’re sad to have lost Daniel due to the pressure of other work, but we’re grateful for the contribution he made during the years he served on the Council. We still have two vacant places on the Town Council, so if you fancy knowing a bit more about the role just get in touch with the Town Clerk for a chat. Have you spotted the new Town Council logo on the front of the newsletter? We felt it was time for a more up to date image, but we wanted to keep an eye on tradition too. So we kept the stag and gave him a new lease of life. We hope you like the new image as much as we do. The Community Pot has proved hugely popular over the last couple of years, and of course the Gala has been a mainstay of village life for much longer than that. So what better than to bring the two together? Last year we invited people to vote at the gala to let us know which schemes were your favourites to receive funding, and hundreds of you did. We gave away almost £4,000. This year we’ll be there on Saturday 2 July – let’s hope the sun shines on us again. Look out for the red gazebo and come along to let us know where you think the money should go. If you’ve time to stop for a chat, so much the better. Annual Report 2015-2016

In the past year Denholme Town Council has: ♦ Recruited two new councillors – Julie Wood and Jacqui MacFarlane

who bring new skills and village involvement to the Council ♦ Said goodbye to Daniel Holmes who resigned due to other

commitments. We thank him for his work on the Council and particularly his input on Road Safety, IT and the Youth Café.

♦ Supported the Town Clerk to achieve her Certificate in Local Council Administration which means the council benefits from her knowledge and contacts.

♦ Developed a new logo – a modern image whilst keeping a traditional idea.

♦ Taken part in the ‘Friends of Denholme Mechanics’ group which has helped communication and resulted in practical improvements in the Mechanics.

♦ Given nearly £4,000 to 9 local groups with the ‘Community Pot’ with a successful voting event at the Gala. This year’s voting event will follow the same format.

♦ Commented on 24 planning applications, monitored planning issues and seen the development of new housing at the New Mill site and at New Road.

♦ Addressed road safety issues and discussed the siting of a pelican crossing near the new housing.

♦ Strengthened links with the Youth Café and supported the Management Committee with the Asset Transfer of the building.

♦ Improved its role with social media and responded to issues raised on it.

♦ Produced four copies of a well–received newsletter for the village.

Looking forward, there are challenges ahead as we respond to the current and any future financial situation which is impacting on local councils and services. This might include the ‘New Deal’ with Bradford Council where local councils like ours can consider taking on or sharing some services.

Community Pot This year there is only one round of the Community Pot.

Applications have now been received and the voting event for this year will be part of the annual Denholme Gala on Saturday 2 July in Foster Park. Look out for the red gazebo.

Anyone who is resident in the village and aged 8 or over is eligible to vote.

New Councillors

Julie Wood

I’ve lived in Denholme almost 13 years. I lived and worked in

Keighley at Peter Blacks for 8 years as a designer of tex0le gi1s, moving on to

handbag designing at a later date. I became the designer coordinator at

Antler luggage where I was fortunate enough to travel and see a lot of very

interes0ng countries including Vietnam.

A1er having a break to have children, two beau0ful girls, I returned to work

and I am now a teaching assistant at Cullingworth Village Primary School.

I have been the Secretary of the Denholme Youth Cafe now for almost 2

years.

I feel it's important to keep the iden0ty of the village. Our village is in a rural

and very beau0ful part of Bradford with spectacular views and scenery. A

friendly village with a good community spirit and a place where people s0ll

say good morning and stop and have a chat. Joining the town council will

give me a li!le more insight into our village, how it is maintained and how

decisions are made. I hope to be able to help in this process by giving my

0me.

Jacqui MacFarlane

I was born in the Midlands and came to Yorkshire to train as a teacher.

I instantly fell in love with the place and have been here ever since! I have

two children and when they were small we lived on a small holding in Tong.

They are now aged 37 and 41 .

I re0red early ten years ago a1er a career of 30 years in Educa0on. I was a

Primary Headteacher for ten of those years. I am passionate about educa0on

but also health and well-being.

Once re0red I retrained as a life-coach and mentor. I moved to Denholme

three years ago and have now joined the council to become more involved in

the local community.

I love walking locally and in the Dales but my real love is dancing which keeps

me fit in addi0on to a!ending Pilates at the Mechanics Ins0tute on

Monday evening! I look forward to helping develop the Mechanics further

as a valuable community resource. I hope to help the Town Council meet

the needs of local people and help residents feel that they can be more

involved and influence decisions that affect them and their locality.

THE FELIX & RUPERT GREENWOOD MEMORIAL TRAVEL FUND

Are you between 10 and 25 years old, live in Denholme, and are going on an educational or cultural trip in this country or abroad or know someone who is? If the answer to either is yes, then the Greenwood Travel Fund is offering up to £200 towards the cost. The funding is not means tested and trips can be taken independently or with a group. Simple to complete application forms can be obtained from the Town Clerk at Denholme Town Council – email [email protected] or call or text 07531 855150. Completed forms should be returned to the Town Clerk at Denholme Mechanics Institute, Main Road, Denholme, BD13 4BL by hand or post. To raise funds for Denholme’s young people, we have a bottle stall in Foster Park on Gala Day, and any bottle donations would be very welcome. The bottles can include wine, soft drinks, toiletries in bottles, sauces, washing-up liquid, nail varnish and other make-up in bottles, in fact just about anything in a bottle. All donations should reach us by Monday 27 June and the address to bring them to is The Fairways, Keighley Road (opposite the New Inn pub), telephone 01274 835260. Even if you’re unable to donate, do come along to the Gala, try and win a bottle and enjoy the day. We look forward to seeing you. To give everyone in Denholme an idea of what we do, the Greenwood Trust is hosting a meeting in the Mechanics’ on Monday 5 September from 7 to 8pm. Refreshments will be served. All those interested should come along and find out exactly what we do, and then pass the information on to anyone else who may benefit from our funding. Do come.

Mpika Relief Fund – soon to be known as Mpika Village of Hope !

We are changing our name, as we are no longer just working for famine relief, but helping to build a community. We now have in Mpika, a lovely orphanage, a large school and a thriving farm, all largely built on the efforts of our charity. Big thanks to all those who have generously donated and bought from us and for our lovely child sponsors. More information can be found on our brand new website at

We are always grateful for saleable items, large and small, for our three shops and can collect and deliver bigger items. We have even found a way to make money from old videos and records, so keep them out of landfill and send them our way please!

Bingo Nights – Now Every Month

we now have a regular bingo session on the 3rd Thursday each month. Entrance is FREE and we start at 7.00pm with doors open at 6.30pm.

As it was popular enough to run monthly we have also decided to apply to the Community Pot to buy a bingo machine instead of borrowing one each time. Please consider voting for us in the event at the Gala.

Autumn Programme

Plans are underway for the third Quiz Night probably in November and a comedy/talk evening in October. We really would like new ideas that could prove popular. Good neighbours

The Denholme Film Night group first started to show films in what was the

Blue Room, now the Community Room. The ini0al showings were made

using equipment and resources from a variety of places.

One of these was Keith Walker, a re0red local sound engineer, who donated

a wealth of knowledge and effort, installing and seDng up the sound

system, in addi0on he donated an amplifier and DVD/CD player.

Over 0me a new projector, screen and speakers replaced the loan

equipment but the sound system remained and Keith maintained it

whenever it needed it.

Regre!ably the Film Nights are now a thing of the past, they may return,

hope springs eternal!

The sound system however con0nues to soldier on. Earlier this year Keith

replaced the amplifier with an updated version and installed it with the

DVD/CD player in a cabinet.

Never seeking the limelight or in the forefront for awards etc. now is a good

0me to offer a Community thankyou to Keith.

Community Library News

Summer is here at last and there is so much to look forward to in the library!

Na0onal Book Start week is 6-12 June, the theme this year is ‘Under the

Sea’. This will also be reflected in the ac0vi0es in the parent and toddler

sessions, dates to be arranged. (Look out for no0ces in all the usual places,

plus the ‘New Living in Denholme’ Facebook page). And of course we will be

looking forward to seeing you all at the Gala.

Then there’s the Summer Reading Challenge on the theme of Roald Dahl, to

coincide with the 100th

anniversary of his birth (which links in with a new

film about ‘The BFG’ during the summer ) and the ever popular Zoo Lab.

It’s worth men0oning that although our village community library is small,

we could almost be compared to the TARDIS! Apart from the frequently

updated stock of books including the non-fic0on sec0on, children’s books,

audio books, computers, free WiFi, printer and the reading room, our family

history service and our monthly coffee mornings are very popular.

We have recently started on a new venture. We now run an addi0onal loan

scheme with books that have been donated in good condi0on. These books

can be borrowed in a similar way except they are exclusive to Denholme

and are not part of the wider Bradford library. We are constantly looking for

ways to improve what we do and welcome any sugges0ons on how to

provide a be!er service.

We are very proud of our achievements considering we are volunteers and

without this input we wouldn’t have a library in the village at all. So far the

community library has been going for 4 years!

Saturday 2nd July

The Committee is working hard to make this year’s Gala as enjoyable as previous years for the residents of Denholme and those from surrounding areas. There will be stalls, the fair and special events including dancers, fire dancers and the popular Mellin Family Dog and Ducks display.

We chose the Gala Queen and her two attendants at a disco in May.

There is a fancy dress competition with several classes and prizes. And a prize for the best dressed pram or bicycle. We hope people will be thinking of some creative ways of entering these competitions. To enter, just join the parade!

The parade has been a feature of the Gala for over 50 years and will start from Hillcrest Road at 1.00pm, as usual.

The Felix and Rupert Greenwood Memorial Trophy will be presented to the best float!

Previous winners have decorated a pick-up truck. We have an offer of a flatbed lorry if anyone would like to use it.

Should vehicles not be available, Groups and Organisations may walk in the parade and then arrange themselves in the arena where they will be judged as if they were on a float.

There will be a grand raffle as usual with tickets on sale from mid-June The draw will take place at the Gala, where the winners will be selected by the Gala Queen and her attendants.

Help!

The Committee would be very grateful to anyone willing to spare 30 mins

to an hour to help in the park on Gala Day, especially with setting up and

packing away. We are a small Committee of five and although we

manage to organise the Gala and programme, we would welcome

anyone wishing to join us. There will be a chance to offer help for

Indoor Bowling The Over 50s (Denholme Elders) held an impromptu indoor bowling session on Tuesday 12 April. This was the first occasion the newly acquired mats, bowls and equipment had been used.

Everyone enjoyed playing and looked forward to being able to play in the future on a more regular basis. The article in the last newsletter did prompt some expressions of interest, but what is really needed is some expertise and experience. It is really good that the community are able to access this activity on an ad hoc casual basis, but what could be achieved if we only knew what we were doing? “Do you remember the 0me we saw fairies here? It was over there by the old Oaken

root.” she said in a hushed whisper, because they both thought that the old stump

had magical powers.

“Yes but did we really see it? I mean I did think so then but now…..” his voice trailed

away. Gwen stood up so quickly, the tree stump wobbled as she leapt for the bank.

“I DID see them!” She stamped her foot. “So did you! Don’t tell me you don’t

remember ‘cos I won’t believe it!” Owen was alarmed and surprised at the same

0me to see Gwen’s eyes star0ng with tears. She wrung her hands, her bo!om lip

curled up like a great big wave breaking over the sand. Owen

stood up carefully, hands extended in a conciliatory manner.

“OK, OK, yes, I remember, err, one had a sort of….” He looked at

Gwen for support or confirma0on

“A green kind of pointy hat?” Gwen nodded “And, and wings? Yes

wings!” Gwen smiled and Owen felt encouraged enough to

con0nue.

“What about the beau0ful fairy with gossamer wings and dainty shoes?” said

Gwen in reveren0al tones.

“She danced all around us!” Gwen clapped her hands in glee, jigging a li!le dance on

the bank and almost slipping into the water in the process.

“We sat so s0ll didn’t we?” said Gwen excitedly, her face caught in the last rays of the

sun. “So as not to frighten them, we watched them for hours!”

This was not exactly the same memory as Owens’s but he didn’t want to contradict.

“I think it’s 0me we went back home” said Owen. Gwen nodded reluctantly. They

tro!ed back slowly, feet pounding the turf. Neither of them really wanted to

acknowledge the fact on this beau0ful sunny evening that they had begun to deal

with first signs of growing up, a coming to terms with reality. In a way, that’s what

the argument had been about. They’d been playing in the old fort and Gwen refused

to let him be the leader but he was always the leader! It came to blows; he was so

surprised when she punched him. Owen very nearly cried, but not in front of Gwen.

They lived almost next door, as they turned the corner into the lane they saw their

mothers standing outside, wai0ng for them.

“Oh thank goodness!” the mothers exclaimed together, “Wherever have you been?

And just look at the state of you!” “Straight into the bath for you my girl, where are

your shoes?” Gwen’s Mum fondly tweaked dead leaves and bits of grass from Gwen’s

hair. The two mumbled their goodbyes, Owen secretly pleased that Gwen had le1

her shoes by the brook and hoped his Mum didn’t no0ce that his shoes were wet

through. As Owen went indoors, his mother turned to him and said,

“So that’s where my broom went.” She turned to look at the make-shi1 horse “and

don’t bring that old wellington boot into the house, it’s covered in mud. Where’s the

other one?”

Kingdom for a Horse Owen reined in his horse and sniffed the breeze. He loved this land, it was his

territory. The air was filled with the scent of the trees, wild flowers and the first cut of

hay. All around him the birds sang a rowdy chorus, he could name them all. He even

knew some individuals like the one-eyed crow he some0mes fed with kitchen scraps.

Above, blackbirds tried to out-sing their rivals, calling from the highest branches.

While nearby in the big Ash tree, magpies set up a riot of cackles as they stole sly

glances around at all the likely nes0ng sites.

It was early evening in June, warm and sunny. Soon he would have to return for the

evening meal but at that moment he caught a glimpse of his cousin Gwen across the

meadow as she tro!ed along without a care in the world. It had been a lovely day,

the sort of day you always remember when childish things have long since past.

Galloping across the meadow, Owen reined in making whinnying noises and headed

in the direc0on of Gwen. She was such a nuisance! Why had she followed him here?

His nose was s0ll bleeding from their encounter earlier today and vengeance wasn’t

very far from his mind.

Girls! Dad was right, they were no use in a fight but then he remembered his bloody

nose. She 0lted her head defiantly as he approached, clucking to her mount in a cool,

relaxed way.

“Why are you here, this is my meadow!” he said.

“No it isn’t it belongs to the squire and HE gave me permission.”

They tro!ed around each other in a fussy way.

“Whoa, steady there, it’s OK.” They both pa!ed their mounts. Gwen shaded her eyes

to scan the horizon then shot him a sideways glance.

“I was at the brook earlier, a1er, well, a1er I le1 you and I saw a brown trout, shall

we go back and have a look?” Owen took this as a sort of olive branch.

He sniffed, trying to be indifferent to the idea. He knew that soon he would be missed

by his family but didn’t want Gwen to think he wasn’t his own boss.

”Can do I s’pose, I’ll race you!” and they galloped off, whooping with glee, hair flying

behind caught in a sudden breeze.

The brook was their special place; they had been coming here for years, or so it

seemed to them. It was peaceful, calming and always full of surprises. Like the 0me

they had seen the fairies. They se!led down on an old mossy tree that spanned the

brook, dangling their feet in the water. Peering through it you could see the shiny

pebbles that sparkled in the dappled sunlight and 0ny minnows dar0ng to and fro.

“Can’t see no trout though” said Owen with a sniff.

“We must have made too much noise as we galloped up ‘cos it was over there!”

Gwen pointed in the general direc0on of a deeper sec0on of the brook under a

sycamore root. She paused and then said,

Denholme Youth Cafe

The Café Building is Nearly Ours!

The Asset Transfer of the Café from Bradford Council has now been agreed and should be finalised in the next couple of months. We are also in the process of registering as a charity and once this is done the transfer can be completed. We will have a 25 year lease so the building will truly belong to the village. This will be a big responsibility for the committee because we will have to raise about £3,000 each year to run and maintain the building.

Whilst this is a big achievement the café, young people, volunteers and youth workers will need ongoing support from lots of people in the village to ensure a vibrant and active provision for our young people now and into the future. We could also do with some more committee members/volunteers to help keep the café going.

Currently, as well as our regular weekly activities, the café is open every Saturday between 11.00 and 1.00 which will continue until at least September. Why not pop in for a chat, a cuppa and biscuit or just to shelter from the rain! You could also tell us your ideas for new events/activities etc. Everyone is welcome.

Community Pot Have a look elsewhere in the newsletter for our bid for some new outdoor seating. Voting takes place at the Gala on 2 July so please vote for it.

Forty Thieves! We have created a Forty Thieves group. Members support us by agreeing to make an annual donation to our funds. It can be anything from a few pounds upwards. Denholme Rural Crafters

We seem to have had a busy start to the year. The ladies who enjoy knitting have been making ‘fish and chip’ jumpers. These are being sent to Africa

very shortly, where some of the new babies are born into really poor families and many of them are born with AIDS. They are sent home wrapped in newspaper which is why they are called fish and chip jumpers. We’re sure these will be more comforting than newspaper!

A few of the ladies are knitting cardigans for premature babies. This is all beside our personal favourite crafts.

FOSTER PARK

‘Friends of Foster Park’ – there has been chat on Facebook ‘New Living in Denholme’ group recently about the state of the Park.

Thinking ahead to the cutbacks that Bradford Council could be making in the future it may be an idea to form a ‘Friends of‘ group to join forces to improve the state of the park and work with the Council Wardens and Bradford Council.

DENHOLME CRICKET CLUB

The first team got off to a great start in their first season in the first division winning their first two games against good opposition in Crossflatts and Embsay. Unfortunately, they lost the third game at Haworth Road but bounced back the next day with an impressive win in the Wynn Cup against Thornton-in-Craven.

The second team have also played two games, narrowly losing both but are fielding a young team and we are sure results will improve.

Unfortunately, we have been unable to enter teams at under 9 and under 13 in the Upper Airedale Junior Cricket Association as planned, as there has not been enough interest shown. However, we are continuing with junior practices and encouraging children aged 7 to 13 years to attend in the hope that next season we will be able to enter teams at these age groups or perhaps even arrange a few friendly games this season.

Our under 15 season is underway and whilst results have gone against us, we have all seen a massive improvement in all the boys and girls who are all enthusiastic about the game and supportive of each other.

The Evening League got off to a great start at Shelf with a win despite the game being played in arctic conditions (see picture below).

Senior practice will continue on a Tuesday night and we welcome new faces so if you are new to the village and want to get involved please call in. Junior practice is on Friday evening, all youngsters aged 7 -16 welcome.

Finally, we have joined Club Yorkshire & have obtained numerous tickets to Yorkshire CCC County Championship matches, 50 over one day games & T20 matches. These tickets

are available to all for a small donation to the club.

Denholme History Group The History Group had a successful meeting in March, with a presentation on the story of Foster's Mill using information and pictures from the growing Archive about Denholme and its people. We are moving towards establishing the Archive in the Mechanics Institute, which will be open for people to view. We are also planning that a digital version will be available via the Denholme Town Council website.

In May, Christine Booth, a volunteer from Shibden Hall presented 'Shibden Hall Through The A g e s ' . T h i s in format ive and interesting talk will be followed by a visit to Shibden Hall on 6th July, where Christine will lead our t o u r o f t h e Hal l . Anyone

interested in coming along can contact Frances Morgan. We will be leaving Denholme, by car, at 10 am for the tour from 10.45 - 12.15, approx. After this, people may like to have lunch at the cafe in the park. Please book your place by 22nd June. We are hoping to use Denholme Galas as a subject for one of our autumn meetings. We would be grateful if anyone with stories or photos of past Galas could contact any of the names below, so items can be copied, added to the Archive and used in the presentation.

10 top tips to get the most out of your

• Is your issue urgent? Do you need to see a specific GP? Is it important

you are seen quickly or would you rather wait for an appointment with a particular GP? Would you benefit from seeing a GP who knows your history personally?

• Take notes to help you. Before you see your GP, be clear in your own mind

what you want to say. Make a note of your symptoms, worries and any questions that you would like to ask.

• Many problems? See if you can book a double appointment. If you have

a number of issues to discuss ask whether you can book a double appointment to give you more time to talk them through.

• Take a list of your medicines – prescribed or otherwise. Bring a list of

any medication, including over-the-counter and/or alternative medicines, or anything

prescribed after a hospital visit. This includes tablets, liquids or creams. Your GP needs to know about everything you are taking.

• Discuss important things first and stick to the point. Do not feel you have

to justify being there or leave your main concern to the end.

• Not clear on treatment plan? Ask again. Make sure you fully understand

the next steps before you leave the room.

• Ask who to contact if you have any more questions. You may think of

questions after your appointment. Find out who you can contact to ask questions, as

well as any support groups that can provide reliable information.

• If you need support, take a relative, carer or friend. They can help you

understand or explain.

• Unhappy? Ask to see another GP. If you’re not happy, you can ask to see

another GP in the practice. You can also change GP practices, but you should as a first step always discuss your concerns with a practice staff member first.

• Could the practice nurse deal with your problem? In many cases, a

practice nurse could deal with your concern, so consider this as an alternative to

making an appointment with a GP. The surgery may also run special clinics such as asthma and diabetes, so make sure you find out.

Denholme Patient Participation Group

New members are welcome to attend the Denholme Patient Participation Group which meets on a weekday evening every couple of months. Residents who go to the Thornton and Denholme medical practice attend as well as members of staff. The group want to ensure the best service for patients in Denholme and also want to make information available to residents (see this and the next pages) and put on health events in the village. One of the recent issues is the changes to the Appointments system. We would welcome your feedback on this. There are also Health Champions in Thornton and Denholme who help organise and run health events. Denholme Primary School

At Denholme Primary School we know how important it is that children can

write well for a range of purposes. We work hard to make wri0ng interes0ng

for children and give them real opportuni0es to write.

For the last two terms Mrs Knighton in Year 3 has been leading the publica0on

of a school magazine. This has a different theme each term. Children can

contribute ar0cles by wri0ng them and pos0ng them on the magazine wall.

They are then selected and published by Mrs Knighton and the children.

The first two issues have been a great success and were good value at 50p!

The second edi0on on a Roald Dahl theme has now been selected by Cardiff

University to be included in their English 4-11 publica0on. This is a sign of the

quality of the children’s wri0ng and the hard work of all the children and staff

at our school. (The photos are two pages from the magazine.)

This term the theme of the magazine is ‘Summer’. We encourage children (and

adults!) to contribute for the final edi0on of the year.
