UNITED STATES OF MEXICO

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, New Zealand Prime Minister Rt Hon John Key and cohorts hold their bi-lateral meeting at Chapultepec Castle, Mexico City, overlooked by David Alfaro Siqueiros’s 1957 mural “From the Dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz to the Revolution – The People in Arms.” The meeting was moved from the Presidential Palace in the Zócalo to avoid demonstrations by protesting teachers. 3rd from top left is Mexico’s ambassador to NZ H.E. Leonora Rueda, President Peña Nieto, Mexican Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Meade Kuribreña 3rd from top right is Hon Nathan Guy, Rt. Hon. John Key, NZ ambassador to Mexico H.E. LANZBC President Clare Callow front table on left in white, the radiant Mexican Ambassador to NZ H.E. Leonora Rueda looks-on from beside the president’s lectern. Chapultepec Castle was used to house the Hapsburg Mexican Emperor Maximilian I and Empress Carlota during the Second Mexican Empire as well as the polemic Mexican dictator Porfirio Díaz (1876–1911). Mr Key laid a wreath at the Monument to the Niños Héroes ("Boy Heroes") at the foot of Chapultepec Hill. The boys died defending the castle when it was taken by United States forces during the Battle of Chapultepec in the Mexican-American War. The Boy Heroes are commemorated by a large mural on the ceiling above the main entrance to the castle as well as by the impressive Monument below the castle.

FEDERATIVE REPUBLIC OF BRAZIL

President Dilma Rousseff greets Prime Minister John Key in Brazilia’s stunning Oscar Niemeyer-designed Planalto Palace. Niemeyer's idea was to project an image of simplicity and modernity using fine lines and waves to compose the columns and exterior structures. The longitudinal lines of the palace are kept by a sequence of columns whose design is a variation of those at the Palácio da Alvorada, although they were arranged transversely to the body of the building. The palace's façade is also composed by two strong elements: the ramp leading to the hall and the parlatorium (speaking balcony) from where the president and foreign heads of state can address the public.

After looking around the beautiful English-style home with huge gardens and a pool, he promised not to tell Treasury officials back home about its splendour, in case they tried to sell it.

ON A LIGHTER NOTE

“I didn’t notice” – A Temporary Lapse in the Prime Minister’s Powers of Observation

According to Fairfax NZ News Prime Minister John Key managed to avoid a diplomatic - and domestic incident - when questioned about Mexico's glamorous First Lady. Prime Minister John Key, accompanied by wife Bronagh, met Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto’s actress wife Angelica Rivera but when asked what he thought of the sultry beauty, Key said: "I thought she was very nice. When pressed on whether he thought she was attractive he said" "I didn't notice," adding with a grin: "Bronagh told me to say that."
