Glyn Jones

Glyn Jones brings over 25 years of industrial experience working in the field of health and safety. He is a sought after as a conference and corporate communications events speaker and leadership coach. He is known for his direct no nonsense style. His communications work has taken him around the world where he specializes in talking about the tough issues while bringing a unique combination of education, entertainment and humour.

He was named Adjunct Professor of the University of Alberta, and he is a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP).

Cindi Schwartz has been with WCB Alberta for over 5 years, and has a broad experience working with both injured workers’ claims and employer accounts. In her current role as an Account Manager, she works directly with employers and industry groups to help them develop early return-to-work programs and achieve success in disability management. She has extensive experience coaching employers on how key strategies can positively influence rates and building relationships with employers and industry groups.

Ryan Davis is a Management and Occupational Health & Safety Consultant based out of Edmonton, Alberta. His practice focuses on training, mentorship, and Health & Safety Management System (HSMS) audits. With a background in accounting, Ryan’s focus is to use numbers to demonstrate the return on investment (ROI) in Health & Safety for clients and students alike. The passion for data was demonstrated by achieving the highest score in Manitoba on the Certified General Accounts Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis Exam in June 2009.

Ryan holds designations as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Health & Safety Consultant (CHSC) through the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE), and Professional Gold Seal Certification (P.GSC) through the Canadian

Construction Association.

Jason Seeley

Jason Seeley owns his own company and has worked as an Associate for Advantage Fleet Services Inc. (AFSI) since September of 2004.

Jason Seeley’s work expands across the three western provinces in Canada. He has over 20 years of experience in the transportation industry as a professional driver, trainer, safety assistant, and he is an accomplished keynote speaker for a wide variety of events. In 2005, Jason was certified in Commercial Vehicle Collision Reconstruction and On Scene Collision Investigator Level II and is a provincially recognized Long Combination Vehicle Instructor/Examiner, as well as a certified PDIC and Forklift instructor. His hands-on experience, coupled with a University of Alberta Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and Psychology from the University of Alberta make him a valuable

part of the Advantage Fleet Services Team and an excellent resource to clients across the west.

Workplace LeadershipKavis Reed

Kavis Reed came to Canada in the Spring of 1995 to play football with the Edmonton Eskimos Football Club (CFL). In his fifth season as a Defensive Back with the club, he sustained a neck injury, which forced him to retire from playing. After a year away from football, Reed returned to the CFL as a Coach, where he has spent the last 13 years.

The graduate of Furman University in South Carolina decided that he needed to upgrade his education and recently completed a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) Degree. Kavis has spent a lot of his time studying and speaking about the topic of Leadership. He firmly believes that strong leadership is the Key to success for all institutions (family, community, business, government). A strong study in “servant leadership,” Reed believes that leaders primary responsibility is to build others. Mentorship and altruistic actions are the centerpieces of Leadership.

During his playing days, Reed spent a lot of time working in the industrial sector in sales, marketing and recruitment. He has taken this experience to explore consulting opportunities in the business community.

Reed is Married to Darlene Katherine and has two children Tyra and Tarik. Although he has worked in several cities Reed and family maintain residence in Edmonton.

Steve and his family immigrated to Canada from Manchester, England, in 2000 after visiting here with them for a millennial celebration. Starting out in Northern BC, he worked in Health and Safety for the Northern Health Authority, which was a sidestep from previous experience in the IT industry back in the UK. Fifteen years later, after holding several safety management positions in oil and gas, large-scale food production, engineering and manufacturing as well as furthering his health and safety education by completing various certificates and diplomas, culminating in the completion of his CRSP designation. Steve manages his own consultancy company SafetySavvy Inc, which currently provides support and external auditing services for the mainline certifying partners in Alberta and British Columbia.

Michelle Cederberg helps organizations increase productivity and effectiveness by cultivating energized and engaged employees. Through 20 years of hands-on experience as a speaker, author, fitness educator, life coach and entrepreneur. She has developed innovative and practical methods to solve our enduring health and energy dilemmas in a realistic and do-able way.

She holds a Masters in Kinesiology, a BA in Psychology, a specialization in Health and Exercise Psychology, is a Certified Exercise Physiologist (CEP) and Certified Professional Co-Active Life Coach (CPCC). She truly combines mind, body, and practicality to inspire change!

During her years as a personal trainer, she regularly worked with clients to overcome work-related injuries and witnessed first-hand how poor health and high stress contributed to the injuries and hindered recovery. As a life coach, she sees how a focus on health and self-care contribute positively to energy, safety and alertness on the job.

Michelle’s background makes her sought-after for impactful and practical Health and Safety presentations. Michelle is the author of three books. Her latest literary spark plug, Energy Now! Small Steps to an Energetic Life shares her philosophy in an eye-opening and practical way, with methods that make a difference.

Occupational Health and Safety in Alberta - A Government PerspectiveRob Feagan

Robert Feagan has held his position as Executive Director of Occupational Health and Safety Delivery with Human Services for the past two years. Prior to assuming this position he served as the Director of Partnerships in Injury Reduction since 1997. Born in the Northwest Territories and educated at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Robert held various senior positions with the Government of the Northwest Territories prior to joining the Government of Alberta. He has extensive experience in negotiating unique partnership agreements with aboriginal organizations, various industry sectors, and local, as well as provincial government. Robert is a published author who enjoys a variety of activities in his spare time.

Safety is the Journey...Patrick Jarvis

Patrick Jarvis is a certified Petroleum Technologist with an Education degree who spends time shifting between consulting in the oil patch and high performance sport. From board rooms to well sites, Olympic Games to union halls, he spends an inordinate amount of time in airports.

Professionally he has completed oil wells, worked construction, survived teaching junior high students, and “done time” contracting to various corporate HSE groups introducing safety management practices to the accepting, as well as the unwilling.

Patrick has come full circle, as he has survived a work place injury and continues to live the effects. A “self-unemployed” consultant in the oil and gas industry, he understands the challenges of the current work environment and along his journey, he continues to

harvest the lessons. He does not rely on doom or gloom or scare tactics; he simply shares sincere and honest stories that have people consider more fully consequences of their own actions.

Dr. Louis Hugo Francescutti is a native Montrealer who went west, fell in love with the open space and clear blue skies of Alberta and never left.

For many Albertans, Dr. Francescutti has become synonymous with public health and safety. He received his combined MD / PhD from the University of Alberta in 1987 and, while training as a general surgery resident, became fascinated with the subject of trauma. He went on to complete further studies in injury while doing a Masters of Public Health and a preventive medicine residency at Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health in Baltimore. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and a Fellow of the American College of Preventive Medicine.

In 1995 he returned to Edmonton to become an emergency and preventive medicine physician at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. In that role, he continued to witness first hand the devastating impact of preventable injuries and made it his mission to continue to promote injury prevention. Over the past two and a half decades, Dr. Francescutti spearheaded a number of public safety awareness initiatives and campaigns, including the development of an award winning multimedia injury prevention program for teens called HEROES. He has also developed an innovative

emergency medical response computer program that lets emergency responders better treat and track injuries at the scene. Dr. Francescutti is the Founder of the Coalition for Cellphone-Free Driving and former director of the Alberta Centre for Injury Control and Research. He is also the Founder/ Visionary of Injury Alberta.

He is a professor at the University of Alberta and a frequent national health columnist for television and radio. He has given over a thousand presentations world wide on the topic of injuries.

In 2005, he was selected as one of Alberta’s Hundred Physicians of the Century.

In 2007, he was awarded a Champion for Children Award and a Paul Harris Fellowship from the North East Edmonton Rotary Club.

In 2010, he became the 41st President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

In 2011, he was appointed as Honorary Colonel of 1 Field Ambulance Edmonton.

In 2011, he was selected by Alberta Venture as one of Alberta’s most influential people.

From 2013 to 2014 he served as the President of the Canadian Medical Association.

Dr. Robert Barrett is an analyst, writer, and commentator on issues of security and foreign affairs, and is the recipient of eleven major academic awards for his contributions to the way we perceive and remedy conflict. Barrett has worked with several leading organizations, in a variety of industry sectors, to work through difficult communication, leadership, personnel, and cultural challenges. Barrett has presented in a wide variety of senior-level forums and is a regular commentator on national television and radio broadcasts. Dr. Barrett’s unique understanding of elite team performance is also backed by more than 10,000 hours as a commercial pilot and several years of competition on Canada’s national cross-country ski team.

Jeff is a senior software architect with 15 years of experience working in small, large, and government organizations. Owner of SynergyDesk Software Inc., an Edmonton-based software development firm, Jeff has worked with Dr. Francescutti for more than a decade and has contributed technological insights and practical vision to a variety of projects and initiatives. Leading the technical aspects of the Injury Alberta initiative, Jeff is translating stakeholder requirements into a leading edge, online perception survey experience that is already turning heads within both industry and government.

NOT ON MY WATCH: Understanding Your Legal Obligations Related to Workplace ViolenceMark Greene

Mark is a member of Alberta Justice’s Central Legal Services Division, where he is lead legal counsel for OH&S under the Jobs, Skills, Training, and Labour Ministry. In addition, he provides advice to many government departments in respect to occupational health and safety issues.

Mark’s background experience includes environmental regulatory work, where he provided advice to the Department and appeared before the Environmental Appeals Board and transportation regulatory work, where he appeared frequently before the Transportation Safety Board. Mark gained a significant amount of court experience through a term with Alberta Justice – Family Law Division and also was legal counsel to the Law Enforcement Review Board.

Currently, Mark teaches the Occupational Health and Safety Legislation and Policy Course and the OHS Human Rights Course at the Faculty of Extension – University of Alberta.

Mark has been a guest speaker at many events, including conferences hosted by the Health and Safety Conference Society of Alberta, CSSE, the ACSA, Residential Construction Industry Conference, and the Petroleum Safety Association of Canada presenting on matters surrounding OH&S law.
