BY RATNA RAMLI A ccording to 2018 Emerging Jobs in Singapore report by LinkedIn, data scientists are one of the top five emerging jobs in Singapore. The demand for data scientists jumped 17 times from 2013 to 2018. The study analysed millions of user-input job titles on LinkedIn in the last five years. Ms Lim Kim Ying (right), assistant director and head-course development, academic division of Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) Global Education, says: “Employers today can’t find enough graduates to fill their openings for data scientists. We are offering programmes that not only emphasise the applications of analytics, but also equip participants with the core knowledge of data engineering and to tackle the increasing demands for knowledge and skills.” SIM Global Education introduced two new graduate programmes this year that will help to groom professionals to address the shortage of data scientists locally. They are the Graduate Diploma in Business Analytics and the Master of Science in Data Science suite of pro- grammes. They will provide students with conceptual, skills-based and practical learning essential in the emerging fields of business analytics and data science. The part-time programmes are suitable for students aspiring to embark on a career in the data world, professionals who are already in the field and wish to upskill themselves, as well as those looking for a mid-career switch. “It’s a relatively new field of studies and rapidly gaining recognition from the business world as well as technology sec- tors. Be open-minded and stay curious as this is an evolving field where we shall see many new technologies and applications in the coming decades. Above all, per- severance is always important towards learning and in the forefront of technol- ogy,” Ms Lim says. MASTER OF ARTS (INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY) National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological Universityn Full-time: One to two yearsn Part-time: Two to four years

From teacher to

mentorBY RACHEL TAN

Mr Peter Tan has always strived to design and develop high-quality

course materials, including e-learning content, for his stu-dents at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) College West. A colleague’s recommendation to enrol in the Master of Arts in Instructional Design & Technology offered by the National Institute of Education paved the way for him to reach his goal.

In 2016, Mr Tan took up the course part-time while lec-turing at ITE College West. At first, he was taken aback by the seminar-style lessons. He was unprepared for the extensive amount of reading and prepara-tion work. Nevertheless, Mr Tan persevered and found the experi-ence rewarding.

“My classmates and I felt that the seminars have helped us to learn from one another through discussions, improve our commu-nication and presentation skills, and increase our motivation and confidence levels,” he says.

The programme also taught him valuable practices that he took back to his own classroom.

“I present the content in bite-sized formats with increasing order of complexity, use case stud-ies to expose students to real-life situations, let students experience small successes to increase their confidence, and use peer teach-ing to promote active learning,” explains Mr Tan.

He was also trained to design, develop and evaluate e-learning content through observation, inter-views and surveys. His e-learning content was well-received by his students and enabled them to study at their own pace.

The 49-year-old graduated last year and is grateful to ITE for providing him with the edu-cational assistance for the pro-gramme. He credits his career progression to senior mentor at ITE Headquarters to his master’s qualification and experiences. His main duties now include training new lecturers, organ-ising events for professional pedagogic sharing, as well as innovating and devising specific methods of instruction tailored to fields ranging from engineer-ing to hospitality.

“The new role provides me with more opportunities to share my knowledge and experiences with new lecturers from the three ITE colleges,” he says.
