Message from the President and CEO and Chair of the Board of DirectorsIf we had to describe the year 2014 for the Vancouver Aquarium in one word, it would be “evolution”—due in part to the most significant expansion in our history, as well as the launch of Vancouver Aquarium’s Coastal Ocean Research Institute, the first of its kind in Canada devoted to systematically documenting the health of our coastal environments over the long-term.

This past June unveiled the first phase of the Aquarium’s most ambitious revitalization efforts yet, with 55,000 sweeping additional square feet added, nearly doubling our existing space for aquatic exploration. An expansive Teck Connections Gallery features state-of-the art, 360-degree digital screens that come alive with stunning aquatic imagery. A welcoming new main entrance saw the return of Bill Reid’s iconic statue Chief of the Undersea World. From unique Amazonian animals and tropical ecosystems to sustainable energy- efficient heating and cooling systems, the expanded Aquarium provides even greater opportunities to connect with our natural world.

Engaging our visitors with aquatic life—lighting that initial spark of interest—is critical to our mission as a conservation organization. This expansion has enhanced

our exploratory and water-themed touch points to inspire more visitors to take personal action to help safeguard our ecosystems and wildlife. National programs, such as our Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup™ and Ocean Wise™, see Canadians making a real difference all year long.

We’ve also witnessed great strides in our conservation initiatives this past year, a key example being our Marine Mammal Rescue Centre which rescued and rehabilitated its first-ever false killer whale patient Chester. Estimated to be six weeks old at the time of his rescue on July 10, Chester was spotted stranded and in distress along North Chesterman beach near Tofino, in poor condition with several laceration and wounds along his body. With the expertise gleaned from working with the animals at the Aquarium, Canada’s only team of professional rescue experts from our Rescue Centre were ready to step in to save the distressed false killer whale.

On the research side, we undertook groundbreaking beluga whale research that took place this past summer. Using important information and experience obtained while listening to contact calls between the Aquarium’s mother-daughter resident beluga whales, Aquarium scientist Dr. Valeria Vergara researched how human-

induced noise may impact the ability of wild beluga whales to communicate with each other in Cunningham Inlet. Meanwhile, Dr. Lance Barrett-Lennard used a hexacopter to photograph threatened Northern Resident killer whales and Dr. Peter Ross continued to study the impacts of ocean pollution.

It sometimes feels as though the more progress we make, the more work needs to be done. That said, our team of employees and volunteers is supported by 75,000 members, and a vast community of local and national supporters who believe in the conservation work we lead. We look forward to continuing our conservation mission and preserving our aquatic world for generations to come.

John Nightingale, PhD PRESIDENT AND CEO

Janet Landucci CHAIR OF THE BOARD
