Ryan Phillips, Music Director and Conductor

CONDUCTOR’S CORNER

VIRTUAL CHOIR CONCERTDECEMBER, 2020

When asked to describe the Arizona Repertory Singers in my second year as Music Director,

I simply say “resilient.” It is difficult to put into words the love and appreciation I have for our

singers. After all we accomplished last Fall 2019 and early Spring 2020, ARS has grown and

evolved into a family. We encourage each other. We take care of each other. We sing together —

regardless of the circumstances.

Page 4: Photographer: David Sanders

Arts organizations around the globe have fought to stay afloat and prove their worth.

Like so many others, ARS chose to continue honing our craft in a way that was uniquely

“2020.” What makes this group distinctive is our ability to drive and encourage our volunteer

musicians to sing with strength and pride. Our audience knows we have a message to deliver

to our wonderful Tucson community every Fall and Spring; we will simply not let go of that

message of song.

With immense pride toward everyone in the ARS family, we present to you Home for the

Holidays (I have to admit that I was a little giddy when I first thought of this ever-so-fitting

title). This virtual choir video production has been six months in the making and proves that

we never stop learning how to find innovative opportunities to sing for our audiences. Our

singers overcame technological issues, the board faced new logistics and marketing challenges,

and I put aside my shiny new choral conducting degree to learn audio/video production.

The repertoire you will hear comes from ARS’ thirty-seven-year history of choral music.

Each piece is meant to bring the joy of the holidays safely to your living room without sacrificing

the quality you expect from this ensemble. All of us are incredibly excited to share with you

our journey from in-person to virtual singing. We hope you enjoy our determination to create

a wonderful choral experience for you, your family, and friends as you watch and listen to

Home for the Holidays.

A Ceremony of Carols —‘Wolcum Yule’ –Benjamin Britten (1913-1976)(Notes by: Jeffry A. Jahn)

Edward Benjamin Britten, Baron Britten of Aldeburgh, was a native of Suffolk, England. Britten

was an outstanding pianist, conductor and a prolific composer of hymns, song cycles, choral

works, orchestral pieces and operas – including the well-known Peter Grimes. He is considered a

giant of 20th century British classical music. Britten was influenced by British composer Ralph

Vaughan Williams, and was a close friend of Aaron Copland and Dmitri Shostakovich. He wrote

many pieces for his musical collaborator and lifelong partner, tenor Peter Pears. A Ceremony

of Carols, composed in 1942 during a sea voyage from the United States to England, contains

text from a Middle English work entitled ‘An English Galaxy of Shorter Poems’ by Gerald Bullett.

Although Britten originally wrote the pieces as a series of unrelated songs, he later framed them

as one work with unifying motifs played by solo harp and other motifs from Wolcum Yule.

Away in a Manger –arr. Matthew Culloton (b.1976)(Notes by: Jeffry A. Jahn)

Matthew Culloton founded and directs The Singers—Minnesota Choral Artists, and is

Choirmaster at the House of Good Hope Presbyterian Church in St. Paul. He was honored with

the American Choral Director’s Association /Vocal Essence Creative Programming Award and

has been commissioned to compose works for many choral groups, including the Dale Warland

Singers. His arrangement of this favorite carol ‘floats’ the melody, sung by the women, over

supporting harmonies (mostly traditional, but not always!) sung by the men.

Summer is Gone –Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912)(Notes by: Ryan Phillips)

This past summer, ARS made a continuing commitment to program music by composers from

diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. This piece demonstrates the versatility and value of

black composers and what they have to offer our choral repertory. Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was

an African-European composer who began his musical training with the violin and as a singer in

his church choir. Eventually, he earned his admittance to the Royal College of Music and found

great success in orchestral writing. However, he did compose a few choral pieces. Summer is Gone

uses a variety of chromaticism and stark tonal shifts to depict the harshness of winter, as well as

the beauty various seasons bring. In our performance, we sing this piece as an octet to offer the

sparseness and chill of winter in our sound.

Brightest and Best –Shawn Kirchner (b. 1970)(Notes by: Ryan Phillips)

The well-known melody to Brightest and Best is drawn from William Walker’s 1835 compilation

“The Southern Harmony, and Musical Companion.” This shape-note hymn and tune book was

made up of 335 songs to be learned on solfège; a triangle represented ‘fa’, a circle ‘sol’, a square ‘la’,

and a diamond ‘mi’. Together, these syllables were part of a system that helped bring music literacy

and a new singing tradition to the Americas. Songs in “The Southern Harmony” were meant for

all singers who wanted to sing. Tone was harsh and bright while conducting was simple; a jagged

up and down motion strictly meant for tempo.

Shawn Kirchner’s contemporary arrangement maintains the original melody of the song while

including a bluegrass-style instrumentation. In blending bluegrass and southern harmony, he

emboldens the musical roots of North America. He also applies compositional techniques, such

as canon, that would also have been used nearly two centuries prior. Novice choral singers would

have utilized this technique to create harmonies without the need to learn different parts. Finally,

Kirchner’s theme and variations arrangement of this old hymn-tune provides harmonic interest

to sustain the listener through the ‘strophic’ verses.

Resonet in laudibus –Orlando di Lasso (1532-1594)(Notes by: Ryan Phillips)

Franco-Flemish renaissance composer, Orlando di Lasso, demonstrates his polyphonic mastery

in Resonet in laudibus. The work is set in four musically contrasting sections that speak to the

joys of Christ’s birth. Set for five voices, this challenging piece heavily relies on the singer’s choral

part independence in relation to the other choral lines, and knowledge of the score. Voices lightly

dance off each other in a polyphonic tapestry that soon begs for steady homophony. These points

are few and far between, yet offer vocal reprieve and time to reflect on the importance of the text.

Latin:

Resonet in laudibus cum jucundis plausibus

Sion cum fidelibus: apparuit quem genuit Maria.

Sunt impleta quae predixit Gabriel.

Eja, eja, Virgo Deum genuit quem divina voluit clementia.

Hodie apparuit in Israel: Per Maria Virginem est natus Rex.

Magnum nomen Domini Emmanuel quod annuntiatum est per Gabriel.

Eja, eja, Virgo Deum genuit quod divina voluit clementia.

Translation:

Let praises resound with joyous acclaim.

To Sion’s faithful: the child of Mary has appeared.

What Gabriel foretold has been fulfilled.

Eia, A Virgin bore God, As the divine mercy willed.

Today He has appeared in Israel: From the Virgin Mary is born a King.

Great is the name of the Lord Immanuel, As was announced by Gabriel.

Eia, A Virgin bore God, As the divine mercy willed.

Erev Shel Shoshanim –arr. Jack Klebanow (1907-1987)(Notes by: Ryan Phillips)

Jack Klebanow strives “to create deep, aesthetic and spiritually moving experiences” in his music.

Erev Shel Shoshanim does just that. Each verse opens with a unison and homophonic chorus

which then blossoms into chordal harmonies that reveal the true meaning of the text. “Let me

whisper a song for you slowly, a song of love” releases the essence of evening romance, painted in a

contextual array of roses amongst the author’s feet. Klebanow continually adds interest through

his vast range of dynamics, which encourages flight in his gorgeous harmonies.

Hebrew: Erev shel shoshanimNitzeh na el habustanMor besamim ulevonaLeraglech miftan.

Translation: Evening of rosesLet’s go out to the groveMyrrh, perfumes, and incenseAre a threshold at your feet.

The night falls slowlyA breeze of roses blowsLet me whisper a song to you quietlyA song of love.

At dawn, a dove is cooingYour hair is filled with dewYour lips to the morning are like a roseI’ll pick it for myself.

Sweeter Still: A Holiday Carol –Eric William Barnum (b. 1979)

(Notes by: Thomas E. Lerew)

Barnum’s 2007, Sweeter Still: A Holiday Carol exhibits his mature mastery over the tools of the

musical trade as well as a text from his own hand. A truly modern American carol, Sweeter Still:

A Holiday Carol is illuminated by a nostalgic melody that pilots us over and around the outdoor

aura that surrounds softly falling snow, gently blowing wind, brightly shining lights, and ringing

Christmas bells. The carol then hones in on the indoor spectacle of children silently dreaming,

and being awakened by what they think could be Saint Nick’s footsteps on the housetop: “They

rush down the stairs hoping to see the bright smile of Santa before he disappears.” But, for

Barnum and for us, what is even sweeter is the singing of a carol, the glow from a fire, and the

family gathered together around the Christmas tree. What joy! What “sweet joy it brings to me.”

Tribute to Helen Schaefer

Helen Schaefer has been a bedrock for so many in our community, and ARS is

particularly fortunate -- Helen is a Founding Board Member. With her husband,

John, she provided unstinting financial support and guidance to ARS for more

than three decades.

As we find new ways to connect with our audience during these challenging times,

we also look to our roots. Thank you, Helen, for helping The Arizona Repertory

Singers become the well-known choral ensemble we are today.
